New Dell IPS S2721DGF 165hz gaming monitor

ok in regards to the blacks I think I will be ok, tftcentral actually reviewed my current display and the LG.

They have a black point measurement, and my current screen is only very slightly better, I have it at 20 brightness which has a 0.13 black point, the LG is 0.14 at same brightness setting but not same luminance. However they did measure a lower contrast ratio, which I assume means if I want the same brightness on the LG I would need to have a higher brightness set which would give me a higher black point. 836:1 vs 1002:1 so I would need a brightness I think of about 35 which gives a black point of about 0.19.

As a means of trying to see how relevant going from 0.13 to 0.19 is I set my current screen to brightness 40 instead of 18 which according to tftcentral is 0.19, and been honest on blacks its there if you looking for it, but to me is slight. Far more noticeable difference on whites which become more glary.

So I think I will be fine, and makes me feel better. If I use the luminance as a means of peak brightness, then its even better, as the luminance data on tft central suggests a black point of about 0.15-0.16

Both reviews are here. Search for "black point"

Also I found a stand which doesnt use a clamp, so now I am going to be hunting for the LG

Got my DGFA today and luckily it's totally brand new with no signs of refurbishment or any refurb markings on the box. The sticker does say it's manufactured in Sept 2020 though .
Tested and there are no dead or stuck pixels ( although I thought there were a few at first until I realized it's just dust ). No major backlight bleed and it looks better than my old 27" IPS. Love the blue lighting at the back.

The default brightness was set to 75% and I left it at that because the full brightness was way too strong for me. Initially the display is set to 60Hz so make sure you go into advanced display properties to change it to 165Hz. The mouse pointer and windows feel much smoother now. Will try some games next.

My monitors (2x S2721DGFA) arrived earlier and seem to be new (no "Dell Returns" stickers or refurb marks), so I'm pretty happy with the turnout.

gratz to those receiving their monitors today. When I got mine in September first think I did was download the dead pixel test ,then set up freesync I use standard setting. then calibrated it with my spider x elite and installed the icc profile basically you just save it I repeat this every month keeps picture up to date. it atm is 100%srb after calibration and run g-synce very well.

Same boat here - very happy. 165hz definitely a noticeable..........novelty at this stage, I guess (lol).

My monitor is setup, no dead pixels that I can see, there is some blacklight bleed but I don't use my monitor in a dark room so it's not an issue. Not good for your eyes.

One thing I will say: 27 inches is too small for 1440p. Definitely 30 inches or more would have been better. However I sit quite far from my monitor so maybe that's why. My previous monitor was a 1080p 27" and at 1440p I have to have windows at 125% to read things easily.

I'm very happy also, certainly a new monitor, no signed of refurb.

First impressions though is that I'm surprised by how small it is! I'm so used to having proper bevels normally, this suddenly feels quite little. Perhaps should have gone for a 32"!

I tend to switch between 100%/125% when the mood strikes. It makes a big difference for productivity at 100%. But for relaxing, 125% is a quick switch and not that inconvenient.

It is lightyears ahead of my U2711 in terms of bezel, weight etc. I suppose it has been 10 years!

Based on the reviews I have read and reports from owners of both monitors, here is what I believe to be a reasonable summary of the dell vs the LG.

Dell has better stand/ergonomics
Dell supports 120hz VRR over HDMI instead of 100hz on LG (issue for xbox series owners)
Dell made enhancements to meet HDR400 specification, local dimming zones, and higher illuminance capabilities. This is consider poor by HDR standards still but is better than the LG, owners of the dell (I assume those who like me have never seen an OLED) report been happy with its HDR.
Dell has slightly better response time behaviour, although both panels are good, and both good at 60hz also.
Dell has a line out in addition to headphone out.
Dell has 4 vs 2 USB ports on the LG
LG has sRGB clamping whilst dell does not. (dell can be done manually still, suggested settings on hardware unboxed video)
LG can accept 4k input for downscaling, dell can only upscale. (issue for ps5/ps4 pro owners)
LG has crosshair feature, dell doesnt.
LG has better vertical viewing angles.

I hope people find this post useful, and I can edit it with corrections or additions.

The ideal size for 1440P would be 30" but not a common size sadly. 32" becomes a bit large for normal desks imo.

My m8 ordered his Dell on the 15th and it's arriving today.. What the actual fk:confused: my second order was placed, a day before and have a delivery date of 29th Jan 2021. DELL is one truly bizarre company.

He has the Dell and the Omen arriving now today
He seems to be one of them lucky kind of chaps.

Has anyone been able to get HDR enabled in Windows with this monitor? It's only showing as SDR in the display settings and I'm not sure how to get it to enable HDR.

Yeah, my order from the 13th is still saying End of Jan. I don't get it

Bonkers isn't it!
The thing I hate about Dell and it's C/S agents is their inability to give you a reason for any of The actions they take, I'm not sure if it's a cultural thing because they're not from uk, but they seem to think it's fine not to actually give you details or reasoning of any facts of why they have done something the way they have.
The monitors are supposed to be good, but Dell from a customers point of view are awful. I've ordered the omen 27i it's on sale and with student code £359 I would have picked the Dell over it coz it has a couple of features I liked more, but I want a monitor this year and with Dell you have no idea what's going on and I don't think they do either

Perhaps the reason is also they don't know what's going on. I doubt they can see more than what we can see on the order tracking page. I am not totally sure, but it's similar behaviour with Amazon also. They can't provide any new info apart from what I can see on my customer side. And they always apologize and offer some discount or gesture and move on. Dell CS on the phone told me on the phone that he is 100% sure that my order will get delivered at the end of the January. For some reason if it doesn't best he can do is offer apologies and that's it.

I ordered the S2721DGF a while back, but ended up cancelling due to delivery slip after delivery slip. I got an LG 27GL850-B (same nano-IPS panel as Dell) instead only to find it does not connect properly to my Xbox series X. (1440p @ only 60Hz instead of 120Hz) In fact, it appears many of the 144Hz monitors have the same issue. Note: S2721 works ok from what I’ve read.

But, I am glad I had the LG because what I found with my short time with it is that it really wasn’t that great.. The contrast is just really poor @ ~1000:1, BUT keep in mind I have been spoilt as I had my Xbox in 4K HDR hooked up to my OLED so can see what is possible. Anyway, decided the only monitor that works with the Xbox, has decent contrast + fast response etc was the Samsung G7, but the thing was silly money. Luckily rainforest had them in the BFS reduced to £429, so was a no brainer even if I could get the Dell delivered today for under £300.
