New Dell IPS S2721DGF 165hz gaming monitor

It popped up for me and- using DisplayPort?
Yeah using displayport, HDR is set to "Desktop" on the monitor, got the monitor driver installed etc.

The only thing I can think is that I've also still got my DVI-D monitor connected to my GTX 980 and that isn't allowing it because it can't handle the signal maybe.

I ordered the S2721DGF a while back, but ended up cancelling due to delivery slip after delivery slip. I got an LG 27GL850-B (same nano-IPS panel as Dell) instead only to find it does not connect properly to my Xbox series X. (1440p @ only 60Hz instead of 120Hz) In fact, it appears many of the 144Hz monitors have the same issue. Note: S2721 works ok from what I’ve read.

But, I am glad I had the LG because what I found with my short time with it is that it really wasn’t that great.. The contrast is just really poor @ ~1000:1, BUT keep in mind I have been spoilt as I had my Xbox in 4K HDR hooked up to my OLED so can see what is possible. Anyway, decided the only monitor that works with the Xbox, has decent contrast + fast response etc was the Samsung G7, but the thing was silly money. Luckily rainforest had them in the BFS reduced to £429, so was a no brainer even if I could get the Dell delivered today for under £300.

It is possible to get 1440p@120hz on the 27GL850 with the Xbox Series X, but you need to disable Adaptive Sync on the monitor. You can't have both 1440p@120hz AND VRR, sadly. The LG seems to have VRR on HDMI capped at 100hz. This Dell seems to be one of the only screens that can do both 120hz and VRR (which considering it's the same panel is a bit "meh!").

I ordered on the 8th Nov and received mine yesterday. I'm really pleased with it. It's smaller than I was expecting with the narrow bezel but looks classy. No pixel issues & after calibrating with my Color Munki the image quality is great with the 165Hz refresh rate being noticeable even with desktop use. It's not a return & was manufactured in Sept so I guess they found a container load they had misplaced.

Hi dotdrew if your using a 980 it could be that the card does not support HDR I read somewhere that it was only enabled on 10 series and above cards due to the limitation on the DP1.2 ports on the GPU.

Thanks for the heads up, I've just found a post on the Nvidia forums confirming that the GTX 980 uses DP 1.2 which doesn't support 10-bit and HDR at refresh rates above 60FPS. Guess I'll have to try the HDMI port and stick to 144Hz until I can find a new GPU to buy.

Hi all! I need your help... I am really torn between the 27GL850-B and the S2721DGFA. I have already ordered and received the LG but I was thinking of returning because of what seems like worse than average glow/bleed. Some pics here: https://imgur.com/gallery/5xr6U8h. However, reading through this forum and browsing the internet I’ve found the Dell could have the same problem and I’m kind of worried it has less reviews because it’s newer. Design wise I prefer the Dell because it has a cleaner look but I don’t think those extra few Hz will make a difference for me because I am not a huge gamer. Also I don’t mind the now delayed January delivery date because I’ve got a different monitor to use in the meantime.
I guess my questions are: What would be my reasons for keeping the LG over getting the Dell considering they are the same price? Did anyone have both and compare them? Is the lack of the sRGB clamp on the Dell a big issue in day to day use? Could the downscaling from 4K be fixed in a software update?

Tbh that looks good, that is just glow all IPS screens have it. Plus it always looks worse on camera.

Very normal bleed nothing out of norm. Got that same monitor yesterday and I'm loving it. I kept colors on "Warm" and brightness at 40. I didn't like tftcentral calibration, makes everything very red.
There's only one reason for it and is if you own a PS5, go for the LG. If not, the Dell, since it's slightly better.
The sRGB mode of the LG is alright but tbh once you calibrate Gamer 1 to your liking, at least me, I use it for everything without need to change to sRGB, so the lack of this mode on the Dell is probably not a big loss unless you do photo editing.

Yeah I've not got a PS5 and not planning to buy one soon since I am building a PC. Will think it over for a few more days but I am stuck lol.

Funnily enough the G27 actually does not perform like a typical VA, but more like an IPS.

It has worse contrast than many VA (G7 is 2000:1, other VA do 3000:1 no sweat, IPS can do >1000:1).

It also has glow like IPS glow, and really bad backlight bleed (speculation this is due to aggressive curve).

even if I could get the Dell delivered today for under £300.
Don't worry, you can't.

I've been trying, they won't budge under £390, and apparently it's going back up to £485 after this "promotion".

Started playing vesperia last night, and that game has a big black area at bottom when showing subtitles, the screen brightness is raised a bit from previous levels on my monitor now as I am testing higher illuminance, and in all honesty I feel the black IPS issue is overhyped somewhat, photos always look worse than in real life, and I cannot tolerate bad viewing angles so it will always be IPS for my monitors until the day oled becomes reasonably priced.

I am still annoyed that I am having to choose between flaws though, still am leaning to the LG and have one on order now (Dell order not yet cancelled), basically having to choose between hdr400 certification (might be ok for PC HDR games of which there isnt many at the moment, displayninja confirms the consoles wont use it, which makes me feel better), 120hz hdmi (I think its unlikely I will want to play console games at such framerates), or sRGB compliance (arguably very important for PC users as 99% of content is sRGB) and 4k downsampling (this is mitigated by my 4k capture device, but I feel this is more important than 120hz hdmi vrr for me).

I am glad hardware unboxed is calling out the manufacturers on skipping sRGB, rtings seemingly doesnt care, displayninja cares and goes as far to say PC users should pick the LG, but I dont think they a big enough influencer. Hardware unboxed also reviewed a monitor that has an sRGB mode that bizarrely does not let you adjust brightness, rightly so he went on a big rant calling it useless. There is some very weird limitations in a lot of new monitors.

I believe this is intentional. I don't believe that they can be smart enough to produce a monitor and not smart enough to avoid obvious mistakes or omissions.

I'm working on the theory that they simply want you to buy multiple monitors. One 60Hz with good colour, one "gaming" monitor with 144Hz and some stupid limitation that stops you using it for productivity.

I simply can't see that all these manufacturers are too stupid not to ship with obvious flaws (which don't relate to the underlying panel tech, but are purely due to their firmware, etc).

I think with LG there is market segmentation, that company sells big high priced screens as well. They have a 4k version of nano ips the lg 950-b, rtings noticed there was a massive step up in viewing angle quality and blacks were same as normal ips, even though its the same panel type. The 4k variant is a massive £350 more expensive, so they wouldnt want the cheaper screen to be only differentiated by resolution I expect. (both 27 inches).

On the other stuff you could well be right, there is lots of double dip strategy's now days in sale tactics, and as you said most of the limitations are firmware related. Also could be to give reasons for users to upgrade at a later date, dont be surprised if dell make a new similar monitor with sRGB added in a couple of years as an example.

DELL vs LG 27GL850 - Both on stock settings, HDR disabled

20200828_172104.jpg

found this earlier in the thread, the LG looks way better, the dell looks extremely over saturated.

Ordered my dgf on the 8th of October still in "black hole production", is it worth waiting even more for it or is it a lost cause?
You could get it in a couple of days you could get it February next year, it seems to be pot luck. My m8 ordered his on the 15th November and has it already yet I ordered one on the 14th November and says my delivery date is 29th January. Tbh Dell are a clueless really badly organised company from what I've seen so far.
I think you have to assume the worst and hope for the best or buy a different monitor
