New Electric Car Choice.

And which ones stand out as fun drivers cars exactly?

No one talks about EVs and a great driving experience. Only the information system.
Answer the question. Interesting you post if no experience ?

The old debunked “EVs” aren’t drivers cars. There are plenty of fun to drive EVs with more power and torque than a so called “hot hatch”. The only thing an EV lacks is the sound and a manual gearbox.

That does not mean they can’t be fun.

I have an I-Pace, it has good handling for an 2.2 ton EV and still far more agile than most of the ICE cars out there. It has far far better acceleration than most of the ICE cars I have owned. Of course a decent ICE sporty car will be lighter and can be fun to trash around the gears on a B road (I owned a 350Z briefly). But the instant torque and acceleration of the I-Pace (and
Many other EVs) brings a very different kind of fun, more visceral and physical.

The new Hyundai ionic N has got rave reviews for being a fun electric car, with the only downside being no engine noise, but apparently it pumps in feux noise and supposedly rather effectively aswell from the reviews I read

Does look awful though...

Yeah, it seems like a solution looking for a problem. Making an EV that drives like an ICE is catering to the kind of person who won’t be swayed.

I remember seeing an Ioniq 5 for the first time in real life. I threw up a little to be fair because it is utterly hideous looking from every angle IMHO. The problem was I had booked a test drive but when I got there I apologised to the salesman for wasting his time.

Each to their own of course, I mean there are even some people who think the I-Pace is ugly. :D

The i-pace to me has got better with age, I weren't keen on it to start, but that was more that it was un-jag like, but I think in the sea of boring blobs being produced and seeing them more in the flesh of late, I've grown to like it, however sat next to Audi and Porsche equivalent it does now look a little out of date.

That said I think Tesla's look hideous and immensely boring especially next to more recent competition. Surely they must be due for refresh by now, feel like they've been out forever

The iPace, whilst heavy, was a blast to drive.

But in 10-20 years no one is going to be looking back fondly or consider them a classic. They will all end up being recycled and forgotten.

It's also a JLR car, so highly likely to produce some epic bills by then but that's another topic.

Not everyone buys a car wanting it to be a classic in 10-20years.

Which EVs have you driven ?

That’s a different goal post to the driving dynamics you set earlier. Make your mind up Mash.

Although I haven't driven one as of yet, the 3 biggest gripes I have is the lack of an indicator stork, I live on an Island with no motorway and everything is A and B roads and roundabouts. Having the indicators as a button on the steering wheel sounds like an absolute nightmare when you constantly have to use them.
The lack of parking sensors in favour of just a 360 degree camera and no keyless entry unless you pay for that option. No idea why "Use your Phone" or "Slide a card on the door pillar" became a preferred method.
Having recently joined the world of Tesla, (almost reluctantly), what I can say is go and test drive one...

1. The vast majority of reviews say the indicators aren't a problem.. almost a none issue.. which goes against my gut feel, I think we all think they will be a problem but I tend to find when everyone says it's not as bad as you expect, I think they are probably right.. (Same for the speedo in the centre display)
2. The new Tesla vision parking stuff is probably on balance 'better' than the ultrasonic sensors, they both have holes in their detection ability, but the vision system picks up a very detailed 3D map including kerbs, posts, low walls etc.. (video below)
3. Keyless entry, it's fully keyless with your phone for free and you can buy keyfobs as well (£180). I was going to buy a keyfob at the time of ordering the car but they were out of stock.. now I've been using my phone as the key (fully keyless, just walk up, grab the handle and open), I actually don't want a keyfob mainly as its a bulky item to carry when I already have my phone.. I have the card in my wallet as backup and with the phone, it can work wirelessly (so proximity based) or you can use NFC on the phone, effectively making it a card if that is your wish.. The latest software update adds UWB support for the model 3 highland, so that's even more precise.

On top of that you have companies like Enhauto make the s3xy buttons/knob which not only allows you to have buttons (with multiple functions per button), but also allows things like 'drift mode'.. and fine tuning of drive bias/regen etc.. (all allegedly not messing with your warranty).

Parking sensors vs Tesla Vision:

Of course, Tesla are a good choice for ease of charging, constantly updated with added features, but it's still a Tesla so a bit marmite in terms of brand.. there are many rivels that are lovely to sit it, nicer more conventional interiors etc, there is something for everyone, but just test drive them.. even our old ID.3 with DCC suspension was only 6.8 seconds to 60 but it felt really quick and the instant power/torque means you can be 2-3 car lengths ahead before someone in their Golf R has managed to get the thing moving off the traffic lights watching them flounder a bit until they eventually get by you (just)..

Was going to say the same. Went from "fun drivers car" to "a classic" which is a much higher bar and even more subjective.

Well classics tend to be classics because there is something interesting about them, they look good, or they are fun to drive...

its funny.......
Aside from performance cars where noise and raw characteristics were important....... (which despite what forums like this may look like are a huge minority of cars) the vast majority of cars of the road, the designers have been aiming to make the quieter, more efficient, easier to drive, more comfortable and with decent performance despite the effiency mentioned before, for years.

EVs come out and totally blow all those goals out of the water, they are super quiet, super efficient, even the slow ones are nippy (and the fast ones are stupid) and they are super comfy, and practical (within their size bracket compared to ICE cars) and have heaps of safety features which only high end ICE cars have AND are generally really reliable, cheap to run and service, with the most expensive part - the battery - having a whopping great warranty.

And all of a sudden none of that matters. but "soul" and being a classic in 30 years time is now the important yardstick?.

i wonder how many people driving honda jazz's or nissan QQs or ford Kas etc etc etc can really gripe about not being a future classic or not offering enough driver engagement and not realise how absurd that would be?.
I have been fortunate enough to own a few what some would consider to be decent drivers cars (my 350z being the obvious one) but both our i3 and especially our ipace i also find are really great drives.

yes i do sometimes miss having a manual 300bhp V6 but unfortunately i just do not think they are sustainable any more to be making new cars like this (so those of you still fortunate enough to own them, cherish them as they probably WILL be future classics as they wont be replaced) but times change.

100 years from now maybe my 350z will be alongside a steamengine at some classic vehicle convention and people can marvel about what old timers used to use for transport. :D

to be fair there are a lot of people esp in some of the crappier press who i think have massively moved the goalposts to try to downplay just how far EVs have raised the bar in many areas of car design... it isnt just specific members on here.
They are not perfect and i would never argue against the view that public charging is too expensive for those who can not charge at home (its fine for splash and goes a dozen times a year)... but in most of the metrics which the majority thought were important 10 years ago, they nail most of it.

out of curiosity jonnycoupe and to lighten the mood a bit going on your sig you currently you have what many would consider to be one of the top drivers EVs, as well as an ICE car many (certainly me anyway) would love to own.

IF you could only choose 1, which would you keep, the F Type or the ipace?
(and if you choose the F Type you are allowed a 2012 1.5 diesel qashqai for practicality :D )

F Type is anotherleague; so is its price - but 2 seats (like my Honda ) is annoying hence i refer to the IPACE as a 5 seater sports car. Also for short runs to maybe drop my son at train station or pick daughter up from the gym i simply feel bad starting an engine for short trips and getting fuel is an utter chore. My mileage means ill never move from BEV as i can home charge. It literally does everything - My 400 Sport has just been built so awaiting that now to swap into and we have permission to keep those for 30months now to keep us in BEVs as the demand on the lease sector etc has really gone up

Nothing compares to the sound of a V8, let alone pretty much the last supercharged variant and lets be honest its one of the prettiest cars around so im just going to make the most of it this summer, its going to Le-mans in June too. Its more like driving a musical instrument and I was lucky to be able to get a 575PS R variant; 24MY had some changes to the exhaust so its better but its not quite as antisocial as the pre MY18 cars before the GPFs came in.
