New essential Android apps thread

textra and nova are the basics everyone should get. past that point it's down to what you use the phone for. no other app on my phone are my favourite apps, but ones i used because i have to. e.g. i can't use barlcays app to view my natwest statement. i can't use google hangouts to chat to my friends on whatsapp.

what do you do on the phone? maybe we can suggest better alternatives

I've only today discovered RRO/Layers theming (requires ROOT). It mega . Real system wide themeing. System UI, apps, softkeys, status bar, recent app cards...

This is TimberWolf and it's nigh on perfect for what I was looking for.

Next up is MATERIALISTIK ICON PACK. Well worth the money.

Which roms are compatible with it? Cm roms?

Doesn't Marshmallow natively support layers? Google has added the code but no way to actually use it without root :p. A possible hint to perhaps finally a proper universal theming engine in the near future.

Does anyone know how to stop Nova launcher from using the Home button to access it's settings and only have them accessible via other means, like say a drop down menu or something?

How do you mean it uses the home button for the settings? On mine the settings screen for Nova is only accessible from the app drawer (top right 3 buttons) or by long pressing a homescreen empty area and clicking settings.

I've set mine to launch the app drawer when pressing the homescreen when it's on screen 1, if it's on any other screen or app, home button goes to screen 1, another press shows the app drawer.

Never mind. It must've been a bug on install as whenever I pressed the home button, rather than taking me to the screen with the small previews of your homescreens and the widgets menu, it took me to the Nova options and nothing else.

Just re-installed it and it seems to work fine now.

Gestures?

By default swiping up in the app draw button opens the settings for Nova. Press and hold the button and hit edit. :)

Edit: Just re read your post, maybe not.

So after many years of using es file explorer i have had enough and uninstalled. the bloatware crap that has been integrated with the app is the final straw. the app has lost focus and direction.

I have just installed "Amaze File Manager" and i am really liking it. No bloatware or ads and its completely opensource. It also has smb client so i can access my shares from home via my vpn. Its still in beta stage so i guess dropbox and gdrive integration will soon come.

I also feel same way about quickpic, with the recent update of "recent photos" i have decided to look elsewhere and have a clean of all my other apps where developers have decided to integrated bloatware/ad crap.

Do any of you have any recommendations for alternative to quickpic. I have come across Piktures through recommendations.

But one thing i like about quickpic is ability to sync/backup photos to dropbox/gdrive etc.

Is there any gallery viewer which has this feature

Get the resigned version of Quickpic from before it was taken over.

This way it won't get updated in the play store.

This, I tried other gallery apps and Piktures was a close replacement but Quickpic felt better to use.

Solid Explorer is my current favourite file manager, moved to it from ES File Explorer: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.solidexplorer2

It has a built in SMB client too which I found works pretty well, and the wide cloud integration allowed me to dump all the cloud apps. There's also Chromecast support which was a bonus. 2 weeks trial but very well worth the money.
