New essential Android apps thread

Anyone got a good RSS or news aggregator app? Pulse is closing down and it has been steadily going downhill since getting bought by linkedin.

Googles newsstand seems to lack options on selection of sources etc.

Feedly is very good. It syncs with the web based page too, which is great. I migrated iGoogle over to it as it’s fully featured and just nicer.

anyone who used Nine email app, does it work with email accounts that are for a bought domain, e.g. [email protected]. i can't get it to work. it mentions only to input the exchange information, but not sure what this is different to my login. is exchange email a different type all together?

Yeah, I've used Feedly for ages. It's decent, but the app has a few little bugs that never seem to get fixed (nothing major). It could probably do with a little more spit and polish compared to some other apps, the bulk of the app is the same now as it was when Google Reader died.

I've gone back to this. Used to use Palabre but found that it was still updating over 3/4G even when I turned it off causing my data usage to be horribly high.

Seems I wasn't the only one looking at their reviews.

Can somebody explain the differences between the Google BBC News app and Amazon BBC News app please?
If I put the Amazon one on I go into news films but I can't find that on the Google BBC News app!

Not sure what you mean.

Chances are if it's on the Amazon App Store it's fake or unofficial (and at worst, potentially harmful), so you're better off sticking with the version on the Play Store.

The one on Amazon is very outdated and hasn't been updated since Oct 2012. The one on the Play store is the newer UI. To add categories swipe all the way left until you reach "Edit My News". Honestly though I'm not really a big fan of the newer UI.

As soon as you run the Amazon BBC News App it goes into News videos that just follow one another but the Google one is just stories that you click on and some have a video. I want to be able to go into continually running news videos on my phone/tablet like I can on the Fire TV. I can't see a setting on teh Google one where I can have continually running videos.

I could extract the app from my Nvidia Shield TV but the majority of file explorer apps don't work well with the remote.

Any suggestions for a good file explorer app for Android TV :p?

I was wondering why for two months now I've gone over my data usage. I don't even look at Palabre anymore *uninstalls*

Feedly looks good but I'm assuming they still haven't added offline reading properly? I looked for ages for an rss reader that lets me set a time every day to sync, so that I can sync news before I get on the tube. Palabre was the closest...

What would you guys say is the best video playing app on Android?

I've floated between using MX player, BS Player, Diceplayer and even the Archos video player but they have all had issues with various formats at one time or another in the past! (I tend to stream HD content from my NAS to my tablet/phone - mostly 720p or 1080p)

I don't mind paying for a decent player with good codec support that is going to be well supported!

Installed VLC but when I came to select it while trying to playback through Plex I get an error that says "Playback error: VLC encountered an error with this media. Please try refreshing the media library" and a pop-up that says "The location https://mynasIPaddress/library/parts/1273/file.avi?X-Plex-Token etc etc cannot be played"!?!?!?

Should I be able to use VLC to play locally on my phone/tablet through Plex?? (it seems to work fine if I use a file manager to just browse to the media on my NAS and select VLC as the player!?!?!?)
