New essential Android apps thread

VLC on Android is buggy. MX Player is the best, but make sure you have the right settings for your device. It plays everything for me, and due to this I pretty much stopped converting my videos and left them as MKV. What phone/tablet are you using?

Doesn't Plex transcode? Don't you need to use the Plex app to play from a Plex server?

The phone is an LG G4 and my tablet is the Nvidia Shield K1. I know Plex transcodes but unfortunately my NAS isn't powerful enough to transcode on the fly! :(

I do use the Plex app but because the NAS isn't doing the transcoding I'm having to use a bit of a workaround by making Plex give me the option of which player I want to use on the device!

I'm just surprised that VLC doesn't work when it's used through Plex but does work when just using a file manager to go to the file!?!?

I've tried loads in the past but now settled for Archos Video Player plus an app called All Codecs for Archos, which basically enables stuff like DTS.

Plays all 1080p MKV's with DTS without any issues and works great with network drives either through UPNP or SMB

Actually GoneMad is the best. PowerAMP still has no standard embedded ratings support which has been asked for years. GoneMad does and has a more robust filtering/playlist system with customisable UI.

Best File Manager atm, paid or otherwise? Currently on File Commander but I'm getting annoyed now with all its prompts for the premium update. If it's the best around I'll pay up but I thought I'd ask first :D

+1 for MX Player, the best video player by miles.
As for Music, PowerAmp is the best imho

I much prefer WinAmp.

I have found it works exactly as I want it to work, and this is the same with Windows, and even so much, that I use qmmp in Linux too... Even more sad like I am, I use a program called FalcAmp on my Atari Falcon and that is simply a WinAmp Ripoff for my Atari.

Is the a good app I can use to remotely monitor my PC temps on my Android phone while I game? Seems like a logical thing to do since it sits in a dock right in front of me.

I tried remote system monitor but the a) the graphical gauges look like poo b) it reports completely inaccurate data. HWMonitor Pro can apparently do it which would be great but it's both expensive (relatively anyway) and doesn't have large graphical displays to show on the phone.

Any recommendations from you fine chaps?

I was recently looking row something that can do this. At the moment I'm using NZXT CAM, you could also check out the afterburner app, but its pretty bad. To be honest, almost all the apps I've tried are pretty rubbish but NZXT seems about the best.

Thanks, I'll give it a look. It's a shame because you wouldn't think it would be that difficult to write but I'm not willing to enter the hell of android development :)

After the request I took a look around and 'Remote System Monitor' looks like it's got some good ratings. I'm at work at the moment but going to give it a go later. Noticed on install that it doesn't require any permissions which is pretty rare these days!

Maybe it will work better for you. I'm on Z170 so possibly it just hasn't been updated yet.

Got NZXT CAM working. It's got the right temps but:
- the Android app only displays either the CPU temp OR the GPU temp with tabs to switch between them. Seriously, WTF were they thinking?
- the app doesn't rotate with the screen so doesn't work with a sideways docked phoine
- the data syncing is done through the cloud so you have to create an account which is annoying

The search continues.

Given it a bit of a go but looks as if it only works on local network. Will have a better look later.
