New essential Android apps thread

It's a Zooper one by Beard. You need the Zooper Widget Pro app, and then the Zooper by Beard widget pack (the first one) and its in there.

No, not really.

You would download the Barclaycard app and expect to manage your bank account?

that's what i expected but unforunately not the case. Barclays mobile banking manages your bank account and debit card spending. barclaycard is just for credit cards it appears, and is currently the only mobile contactless payment app in the uk. what a god damn shame. i've applied for a credit card so will see what happens. hurry the **** up android pay

So I move back to Android tomorrow for my phone (hurray!)- couple of questions on apps I haven't used on my tablet...

1) What's the general view on SMS apps these days? Always used to be that Textra was viewed positively, but I notice there are a couple of new names knocking around, Evolve and Zero SMS. Any views from you guys?

2) Browser - Are they still much of a muchness, or am I best off replacing Chrome? One thing I will miss from iOS is the swipe navigation, very useful rather than having to crane your thumb back to the bottom of the phone!

I think I'm sorted other than that - going to see what the Samsung stock dialer is like and potentially replace with exDialer if it's naff.

Cheers!

1. Can't really speak for the other apps but Textra has evolved into a very robust, beautiful app using the material design guidelines. I rarely use SMS anymore (whatsapp primarily) but for the odd text message here and there it is a solid option with no silly gimmicks. QKSMS was another texting app that I used to test during it's beta phase - it also is very functional and robust but I felt Textra was better.

2. I've only used Chrome and FF and prefer the latter since it syncs with FF on my desktop. Chrome I find is a bit sluggish on my old Note4 and my current Nexus 6P. Also FF on mobiles has support for addons such as uBlock.

What Samsung phone are you getting btw?

Just heads up with Barclays in case it effects you ..their apps won't work on rooted phones

Barclays pay not working in either M and S or Tesco for me, but working fine in other outlets. Strange.

Barclays Pay? I have a Barclaycard but rarely use it for contactless due to the rewards being a bit crap. My debit card is not contactless because it';s one of those customised photo card things which I really should get swapped for a normal contactless one. I wish the UK would take up Android Pay quicker. I know it's supposed to be rolled out this year but I want it now!

PayPal has the in store payment option for quite a few stores now which is great, here's hoping Amex update to support contactless payments from the app too.

it's the only reason i have an unrooted phone. natwest works fine but i found out with my nexus 5 that barlcays doesn't like it so have kept this unrooted. annoying but i've got used to it and tbh nothing i've so far really missed, esp for the cost of not having android pay or barclaycard. i've been accepted so just waiting for the credit card to arrive now. can't wait to be one of the first to pay in the uk with their android phone!

There's still so many places that don't even use contactless payments that I imagine it'll be even longer for phones to be supported. I don't think I've yet been into any supermarket that has it, despite many of them having the updated terminals that should presumably support it.

if any, i find that the smaller supermarkets tend to have contactless. My full size local morrisons does too.

it's being adopted more and more now. couple years back when i had a contactless debit card i found about 24% of the time i could use contactless and barely any of the staff knew what was going on when i asked if they had it and when i used it. now i find perhaps 40% of places make a deal to point it out that they've got, maybe more.

Just FYI, Waitrose has had contactless for 3 or 4 years now.

Well, you're a bit late tbh. I remember Paul O'Brian (Modaco) worked out how to get Google Wallet running in the UK. 4 years ago I was buying goods with my phone in the UK. That's being one of the first in the UK ;)

Then EE brought out 'Cash on Tap' (probably about 3½ years ago) and I remember using it with my NFC capable phone in the Post Office when I'd left my wallet in my locker at work.

So, not really one of the first, it's been around a long time, which for me is why it's so annoying that Android Pay is taking so long...

My HTC One M8 updated to Android 6 last night and i'd like to do a factory reset and format all my storage in order to have a clean install so to speak. Would anyone be able to suggest to an app that can backup my apps to my PC so I dont have to actually bother re-downloading them all from the play store after i do the reset?

Thanks
