New essential Android apps thread

I moved from Weather Timeline to CARROT Weather, which uses dark sky. They're all going subscription based and this is no exception at 89p a month working off my google play credits. Whilst the app itself is nicely designed, the widgets (2 of) are quite poor. Uninstalling and cancelling my sub to it as I type this. Might just go back to Weather Timeline again even though it isn't supported anymore.

Dark Sky does look great and I'd probably buy it for <£5 but I think asking for a sub to a weather app is a bit much...

Dark Sky isn't bad and use it more than the met office app I also use. My job is weather dependent so like something reasonably accurate. Dark Sky is £2.99 a year so not expensive.

Interesting read. Support your devs people :)

He sold it though, so hopefully made a little money from it and it's back in the play store.

It's almost funny really. People don't want to pay for apps and they even go as far as blocking ads... poor devs end up removing their apps as they actually cost them money to run.

I can't bring myself to pay for a weather app, even at 89p a month:p

That's the thing - a one off app fee doesn't work well in some circumstances as the income for the developer tapers off after a while and yet they still have to constantly maintain it. Eventually the developer gets tired of doing so and flogs it to a company with more resources at their disposal - QuickPic being an excellent example. I'd gladly re-install Weather Timeline but I don't trust this new company...

It doesn't help that Google doesn't support developers for its own platform well at all. Subscription fee's help in this area, especially with Weather apps because I believe the dev gets charged to access the weather data API's or something? Except not everyone wants to go the subscription route.

For low use, often it's free, but for a big app, you're definitely paying. I heard the company that bought weather timeline have their own weather feed, or something like that, so it won't cost them.

Just noticed I've started getting "ads" in Google maps. Not ads as such but pins for shops popping up that I've never visited or have any intention of visiting. Anyone else? Can it be stopped?

Could be something in the "For You" section, make sure and areas are un-ticked and it should stop that.

I've got £25 google play credit I need to use before they start expiring (earned on google surveys) - what do I spend them on? :)

I just used a good amount of my dad's £47 of credit on films (planet/apes trilogy for example) from the play store. Cobra Kai is excellent if you haven't seen season 1.

All the decent apps I'd like aren't Family Library enabled so they'd only work for my dad's account. Mobile gaming is pointless so all that is left is video content for me really.

It's a shame Google removed the ability to use credits to purchase their hardware. I purchased quite a few first gen Clowncasts back in the day.
