New essential Android apps thread

what does it have to do to be viable? i use it every day without any issues?

Not look a complete mess. Which it does compared to other applications.

It is also complicated for people who are not tech savvy, I tried to get the parent to use it & that was just impossible. She would rather have the old stock android app.

I wish i could get more people to use Data IM apps instead of SMS but in reality here people haven't moved with the times as quick as us lot on forums.

I'm with james.miller, works very well for me. I don't understand how it's a mess, as said above, I think it's very simple. My mum uses it every day without issue and she's far from a tech expert.

I don't understand how it's any different to 99% of texting apps? Open it, type someone's number, enter a message... send! :)

Need a good app for writing/editing notes when offline, so no evernote or the like... anyone got any reccomendations? Something tablet focused would be nice.

Disa is like a dumbed down version of the hub on BB10, which is an absolutely glorious tool for messaging/email.

Any recommendations for good flash card/quiz/revision applications? There are hundreds on the marketplace but I have a few specific desired features such as:

-Ability to type in what you think the 'back' of the card is (or answer to question or whatever).
-Alerts to remind you to use the application (far from essential, I could just set vibrating alarms for this).
-Different sets of cards/questions.
-Intelligent selection of sets of questions to give you; like if you have answered a set completely correctly the last 3 times you were given it, it would be less likely to give you that set in the future.

Thanks. :)

Can I ask why people don't like Hangouts? Do you guys not message people over data, only sms? Even then, what do other SMS apps have that Hangouts doesn't?

i use gosms which does the following which i don't wish to lose by changing app.

  1. new message pop up allowing quick reply without having to leave the app i was using
  2. i can assing unique tones for each individual person that texts me, very handy as i know if it's the other half, which friend, mum etc or someone i don't know
  3. i can set reminders for unread messages so it'll remind me every 15 minutes of an unread text
  4. signatures for each indivudal person, great as i hate sending the other half an X at the end of each text, and now i don't have to

Been using Disa the last couple of days. So far very impressed, unified messaging between sms and WhatsApp is great, and a nice clean simple UI with no bloat or ads, like GoSMS which used to be my favourite

If the other person is also using hangouts then yes they are free.

Remember to click the icon bottom left and select Hangouts instead of SMS because if it's SMS then it will always send as an MMS instead of via hangouts iirc.

I prefer Hangouts now as it merges chats and texts for the same person and I don't need to hop between apps to read up conversations.

Google need to implement it so that it attempts data and then fails back to SMS/MMS much like Apple do with iMessage.
Like you I quite like Hangouts, hopefully with a few more tweaks it will be the SMS/Messaging app to use.

Tried Disa and for someone reason it hasn't synced my texts and won't let me use WhatsApp through it or even acknowledge it.. Might stick to Hello sms for now.

You need the plug in for WhatsApp then you have to enable and verify your phone number in the settings

Not sure about texts as it didn't sync mine either but I'm not too bothered

Would someone be able to trust me the APK for Disa?

I got into the community & got "You are a tester, Download Disa from the Play Store" But when i click on the link it goes to We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server.

Many thanks in advance :x

[edit - ignore link works now :D ]
