New essential Android apps thread

Yeah there seems to be a lot of love for these new apps around here and not much criticism yet from android community sites either.

I think they are all poor. Far to minimalistic. Colour choice is poor and little to no customisation, as above not very space efficient either. The only positive is the other account option in Gmail.

Anyone shed some light on why the new Gmail app looks, feels and works so much better than before?

Must say the 5 day only view is annoying. Not because it only shows 5 days at once but the scrolling around doesn't work. If you scroll right and straight away try to scroll up/down it ignores you. You have to scroll right wait for a >1 second then scroll up/down.

As do I. At least I did. I'm finding that using one day view and if I need to glance over the week to hold the phone horizontal works well.

A massive plus for me is that newsstand has been updated.

Part of the update is to introduce proper formatting of magazines, so instead of zooming in and out of a huge PDF, you have a table of contents, links to articles etc.

Finally, national geographic might be worth buying on android!

I know it's not fully released yet, but had a weird one with the New Gmail App (v5.0 or what ever)

I have my Gmail and Outlook mail set up, and, I thought, working nicely... I received an email this morning about my order for a new phone I've just bought, Read the email when another one from a friend came in, which I also read and then replied to...

Somehow the content of the Order confirmation email also ended up in the reply to my mate! thankfully the payment details were st**ed out otherwise he'd have my Credit Card!

Don't know how it happened, but I'm a bit dubious to use it again, just incase it does it when I'm replying to someone who's not a friend etc...

Dunno, I just hit 'reply' on the email to my friend, replied and sent... later went to re-read what they said and noticed the 'extra' bits on the end of my reply! I'd not hit copy or paste!! (which, incidentally, the buttons for Copy, Cut and Paste etc are white on a white background!!)

Same, shame none of my contacts do. I wish Google made Hangouts worthy of being an iMessage competitor. The new Messaging app in Lollipop shouldn't exist.

Eurgh, new Gmail app is horrible. Looks like I'm gonna have to find a replacement or put up with the old version permanently wanting updated :/.

Glad it's not just me. Seems to be a bit more of a backlash for the calender app which is just horrific in how it displays your weekly schedule.

Both apps look like they took about 4 hours to put together. All the functionality has been removed in favour of some material look Really not sure where Google are going with this.
