*** NEW Fractal Design Case - Coming Soon ***

To be honest, I know. However, I guess I'm more concerned with the answer to my last question.

Designed the email so that it almost said to them "Please design a new case as good as the Define but with features I need!"
I'm sure they have more cases in planning

Just sent the following email to fractal Design:

'Hi Jens,

I am planning to build a new PC early in the new year and I am very impressed with the styling and reviews for the Define R2 cases. I would really like to purchase the Define R2 Black Pearl to house my new build!

However, there are a couple of issues that concern me! May I ask if it is possible to switch the front door so that it can open from left to right? Also, can you confirm if the case can accommodate an ATI 5970 graphics card?

If the answer is 'No' to both of my questions, can you confirm if Fractal Design have any plans to develop and release a case that will match my and many other enthusiast's practical needs?'

Will be interesting to see what type of response I get!

Well, I can confirm they have new products in the pipeline, however I cannot give an info yet other wise this NEW CASE company, Fractal Design, get annoyed with me. ;);)

What I can say is looking at the Antec Gaming Range, there is the Antec 300, 900 and 1200. The R2 is comparable to the 900.

its very quiet, and it lines up perfectly with the mesh for the fan, not sure on the newer models of PSUs as they seem longer.

well worth it! great case!

pic of the case sorted, with the 8pin wire routed correctly, along with my other 120mm fans. now have 4 x 120mm fans and 2 x 140mm fans :)

With that many fans, is it still quiet? How does it compare to the stock 2-fan configuration (1 front, 1 rear)?

I ask because I'm planning on installing a Corsair H50 as per Corsair's recommendation, rear intake fan blowing fresh air from outside onto the radiator, while keeping the front fan as an intake as well.

Only that would leave no exhaust so I'm considering placing a 140mm exhaust fan at the top (rear-most slot). Since that would invove taking off the sound dampening placeholder chunk of bitumen, I'm worried that it would make too much noise. Do you think it would be the case?

Thanks.

Yer they are very quiet, with the covers on you can hardly hear them, my 8800ultras are noisier than all the fans :)

there is a difference with just the standard 2 fan configuration, but its nothing major at all, i thought it was going to be loud, but it really isnt,

it wont make much noise at all, great designs, and the extra fans have really helped the airflow loads!

any info youd like, or tests, just pm me :)

Thanks a lot for the information, PishY! That's very reassuring.
BTW, I don't know whether you're planning on posting more photos of your build but the ones you have already posted are highly appreciated :D.

Received the following response from Fractal Design today:

'Thank you for your interest in our case, I’m happy to hear that you like it.

Concerning the front panel, that is not possible to switch. Neither can our case fit the Hemlock 5970, with it’s 31cm length. Our case supports about 30cm length, so it’s slightly too long.

In 2010, we will release a full tower version of Define R2 which will be able to accommodate Hemlock 5970.'

Looks like I might have to get a new desk then!

Some more pics!

general view of the case, and the inner workings, excuse the dust! fits lovely, and the black / white theme is a big winner for me!

The harddrive bays, these are fab, you can take them out, pre screw your harddrive to them, then slot them back in, again great black and white theme! really sets the case off, the cooling from the 2 x 120mm intake fans can be felt well through the harddrive cages, which is a plus!

The front of the case, behing the front cover, here lies a single Drive slot, and a smalled one for any optional bit of kit youd like, now the great bit, the 2 fans are accessed from the front, press the doors to unlock and they open, filters protect the fans which is easy to maintain, and then 4 screws holds the fan casings in, undo them and straight out they come, another thing is the wires are long on the fans, which makes life easier!

again great sound deadening around the case, great touch and it works!

a quick pic of the coolers and exhaust fans, the build quality of the case is 2nd to none! and the black interior is a must have in any case, i couldnt go back to a metal coloured case!

IMG_0366.jpg

there is good room under the case, which allows airflow from the psu and another intake fan to work as they should! the noisets thing in the case is my tiny fan on the northbridge.

the overall case! hope this helps people, the new redefined case which i hear they are bringing out next year should be ace! although i have very little if no faults with the current case as it is today!

cheers pishy

I've taken my spare hard drive trays out to aid airflow and avoid any rattling/vibrations :)

I should get the camera out and take pics but my room lighting is a bit bad :/

ok the Megahalems Heatsink Dimensions are (L)130mm X (W)74mmX (H)158.7mm

just been reading on fractals site and says Supports CPU coolers with height of maximum circa 165mm

so it looks like it will just fit this case and have 6mm to spare

my akasa freedom tower has about 20mm from the side of the case! get some pics up of that monster cooler in the case when u get round to it :)

Right now i have 6 hard drives in this case, using only the original 2 fans, CPU is a Sempron 140 cooled by passive Scythe Ninja 2.

HDD temps ?

guys some questions for this as i am on the market for a new case.
i currently have the nvidia stacker but i am not very pleased with it. the main reason is the hard drive placement is very hectic for someone like me that changes/moves hdds often. The main concern is...what about the other panel that is not shown on the pics in the last 2 pages? When its open it provides access to the cables in the back?
Also, is it worth getting to this one from a stacker? Was thinking about the cosmos s but if this is a better purchase i will go for this.
Or wait for the next model that was mentioned that is supposed to be larger..

@PishY
Thanks for the new pics, your build looks fantastic with that matching cooler.

I put mine together today (see my signature for the specs) and I can only concur.

The build quality is top notch, black paint is solid but the white paint comes off too easily (expansion slot placeholder plates and HDD trays), chassis is robust and design obviously impeccable. Clearly, what you see on the photos is exactly what you get.

The assembly went almost flawlessly: the only drawback so far is the cable holes which are a bit too tight. The rubber protections came off as I attempted to slide cables through them, but I just had to fit them back into place afterward and then they stood still.

When it comes to its cooling abilities, I was very pleasantly surprised. I installed a Corsair H50 in the exhaust configuration (contrary to what I planned to do), with the only air intake being the default 120mm FD fan at the front, in an attempt to keep noise to a minimal level. Temperatures were as follows:

(Thermal paste: AS3. Load test: Prime95 [Small FFT's] + LinX [24000], in parallel.)

Core i7 920 D0 @ stock:
  • Idle: 35-38°C
  • Load: 62-65°C
  • HD 5850 - Idle: 45°C
Core i7 920 D0 @ stock frequencies / vCore: 0.925V (minimum stable) / other settings set to "Auto":
  • Idle: 35-38°C
  • Load: 52-53°C
  • HD 5850 - Idle: 45°C
With that little fans (only 2 including the H50's) and consequently low noise, I could not be happier with these temperatures. Dense bitumen layers on the side panels seem to work wonders. I might attempt overclocking the processor (for video encoding purposes) and report the temperature results right here.

So thanks to everybody who posted information on this thread about this stunning case, especially PishY. I can attest that everything positive that's been said about this case is indeed true. It's an excellent buy that met all my expectations and then some.

Update: At 0.925V, it didn't make it the whole night of Prime95 + LinX. Currently attempting 0.95V.

Pleasure mate! forgot to mention about the rubber grommits, that was the only set back, but nothing which couldnt be sorted.

great purchase, and a great system you have there mate, get some pics up, be intresting to see a H50 in there

Fractal Fans are also fab, very very quiet, and move a very acceptable amount of air.

Pleasure once again! PishY :)

Once the panel is off the back of the FD case, you have easy access to the Harddrive cables, very easy acess to be honest, so its an ideal case for quick Harddrive swaps.

also the Harddrive caddys which come supplied in the case are fab to, easy to pull out, and push back in, you get all the screws with the case, for each Harddrive caddy, which again makes life a lot easier :)

cheers PishY
