New graphics card

When I asked a guy in work how do you compare an Nvidia to a Radeon to see which is better. He made a point that people always seem to buy Intel cpus for their builds rather than AMD. Even though AMD have an 8 core processor and Intel have a 6 core and AMD are half the price of the Intel chips. From experience when I moved from AMD to Intel, back in the Pentium 4 days I noticed a huge difference in gaming and performance.

Are Nvidia cards more expensive because they are better? Or are you just paying for the name..

Thing is, in unbiased reviews the 7970 beats the 680 on every count, when overclocked and when standard.

And there I was thinking it was pretty even for both cards, both when standard and overclocked.

I would probably buy the gtx670 though.

But if the OP wants to save some money and have some free games then by all means go for the 7950.

AMD's 8 core is pretty poor though. Back in the day the Pentium 4's were pretty poor.
In gaming the FX8150 comes up as losses against the i3 2100 in pure FPS most of the time.
Lower IPC than the Phenom II range.

AMD cpu's/GPU's departments are totally separate, I wouldn't use an AMD CPU in a build.

Wrt to Nvidia you're paying for a name, where as with AMD gpu's you get performance at a good price.

You're paying for a little bit more performance, physx and all the other fancy stuff.

I must be deluding myself when I've noticed the frame rate drop switching from a 680 to a 7970, even at stock.
The 7970 is obviously giving better FPS.....

ive had Amd and Nvdia cards in the past and both have always done the job. I think the first Radeon I had was a 9800 Pro and it was great at the time. Id love to have an Nvidia card for a change but dont want the problems (if there are any) that comes along with it.

There aren't any. Just pick the best you can afford, which is the GTX670 :)

AMD are better value for the money performance wise, Nvidia have a price premium that people have no problem paying, and are good at marketing

OP get the 670 other than the 7950 as it is better.

If it was between the non reference 670 and 7970 on the other hand, it would be a tricky decision as the 7970 can be a very good card.

Why not buy the gtx 670, play around with it for a few days, give it back to ocuk within the "satisfaction guarantee and give the 7950 a try? ;)

Yes, allot of problems and more than usual, the popular RSOD the most outstanding.

Still, my 7970 had problems like not waking up from sleep all the time, and had driver issues in old games, other than that it was a beast.

670 definitely though over the 7950, just ignore the absolute crappy cooler thats on it
