New headset : Pimax Crystal

I really really hate these Crystal controllers. The tracking is the worst I've ever seen in VR and none of the buttons map to games properly. Any suggestions? Any way to get my Index controller and lighthouses to work independently?
Pimax are supposed to be making a lighthouse faceplate that fits over the Crystal so you can use Index controllers and basestations, not sure when it'll be ready though.

Is really that bad? A guy on another forum says the tracking is just as good as his Valve Index. Which I doubt as there is a known tracking issue at present.

Did you try the Pimax Client v1.12? It's a beta one, is supposed to improve the tracking.

Ya but it's odd it's taking them so long? How hard could this faceplate be to design and produce?

I've got an Index and I've used lighthouse tracking for many many years. I've also used WMR inside out tracking. I play beat saber which makes it really east to tell what is and isn't good tracking, and the Crystals is terrible. Lag, stutter, easily disappear from tacking, you name it.

With my 4090, v1.12 is the ONLY way I could get my Crystal working. The official release v1.11 doesn't even work with 4090's!

That's poor. Are you happy with the visuals? I am sure the tracking issues will be fixed, it's just a matter of when and if you can put it up with it until the issues are sorted.

I read about the problem some headsets were having with the new generation of GPUs. It does sound like something that Pimax should have had fixed before release. I mean the 4090 is out 7/8 months now!!

1.10 and 1.11 worked with my 4090, so don’t know what the difference is.

I agree the controller tracking is poor at the moment. The headset tracking is very good, haven’t had any issues with that at all but the controllers definitely lack precision for aiming precisely down sights for example…

There was a way to get lighthouse controllers working with eg the G2, so you can combine different tracking techs with enough effort, I assume to must be achievable here too until pimax come out with the lighthouse attachment.

That said, the pimax client has base station tracking for their other headsets, I wonder if it’s possible to have the controllers tracked by base stations and the headset tracked by the cameras simply in the pimax client without needing the G2 style workaround? Have you tried?

Crystal has to run a MASSSSSIIIVVEEE inverse distortion compensation resolution of 3232x3824 per eye, or over 12 megapixels. Meaning your PC has to drive over 24 megapixels at 90 FPS or higher to get that clarity. Basically means even with an overclocked 4090 you have to run your games on potato graphics.

This is the biggest problem I'm running into, is always having to play at 45 FPS with motion interpilation which sucks.

I've just come through on pre-order.

Is it worth grabbing or avoid? Are the controllers that awful still?

Depends on where your priorities lie really. If you want the highest visuals for seated VR, this is your headset. For room size VR, wait for the Beyond (I have that on order too). The Crystal controller tracking is terrible.

When was your pre-order? I had my payment request come through a few weeks ago, i pre-ordered 5th nov.
Can't remember, sorry mate.

I want room scale, to play HLA etc.
Damn, so I guess I'm stuck without a VR headset.

Big screen looks good but the lack of any eye tracking leaves me feeling like its the headset which will get outdated the quickest.

How much did the crystal cost mate all-in including import/vat/tax/customs?

I want the lot in one package, yes I know that's not on offer right now but I can see that it will be in 12months

Yep, I said this months ago. The rendered resolution is massive, which means you will have to lower in game graphics. There simply isn't a GPU on the market which would run this well enough for me personally. I'd hate to think what it's like on something like a racing sim during the night or with rain.
Obviously you can run at a lower res, but then doesn't that defeat the entire reason why this exists in the first place. Flight sim won't be too bad I don't think as you can get away with running a low fps and still having a good experience, but hitting 90fps is surely a struggle?

This is why I like the Quest Pro, not the highest resolution or the biggest FOV, but still looks massively clearer and sharper than most other headsets, including some with higher resolution, and because of that you don't need a 4090 to do it justice.

Quest Pro will pale in comparison to the Crystal in black level, contrast, clarity, audio.

Its a cool headset but I don't think its in the same ball park re: visual fidelity outside of its good lenses.

I've seen plenty of people with 4090s being able to use the crystal on a lot of VR games. For sims, sure.. its going to run short sadly but I think those games on lower settings will look substantially better on the cystal than the Quest pro lol.

Given the crystal target audience, i assume they all have 4090s.

My god does anyone know how to get these crap Crystal controllers to work properly in ANY VR PC GAME.

Most of the time the buttons don’t even do anything and the other part of the time they lose tracking with full battery and disappear.

I absolutely loath these Crystal controllers and looking for ways to get Index controllers working with Lighhouses.

I don't doubt your experience of those controllers it's just perplexing that some people, notably Sadleyitsbradley and MRTV said ages ok they're basically just about ok, months ago. Have seen others more recently say they were ok. No-one said they were Index controllers standard. Have seen others say they were crap also. They have mixed reviews. They are basically a Qualcomm reference design and Quest 2 controller copies, how did Pimax screw this up? They had to just manufacture them to an existing design afaik.
