New Intel Processors Announced

I wonder if any Quad Core users will be tempted to take a backwards step and go back to just a Dual Core E8400??
I think I could be tempted as to be honest say 4ghz Dual Core and 4 gig of memory seems like a better option than 3ghz Quad Core does.

Yep. I certainly will. The move to a quad for me was a total waste of time. All i succeded in doing was increasing my power consumption at the wall from 266w load to 422w load and having more heat to get rid of. Nothing runs faster apart from benchies and none of my games use the extra cores. I should have ignored everybody when they said anybody would be stupid who buys anything but a quad. You all know who you are, and there was a lot of you too. Anybody who posted a question about the E6750/6850 was immediately set upon like a pack of ravenous wolves. When they are out i shall be getting a E8400 and clocking that to death.

Ha, who would pay £200 hard-earned for a rock ?

Penryn is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California, in the United States. Geographic location is 38.852° N 121.169° W.

Penryn granite is noted for its beauty and strength. Mottled in more-or-less equally sized specks of black and white, it appears a medium-to-dark gray in color, at first glance, but takes on an almost bluish-gray hue when viewed in a subdued light or, when wet or polished. This unique stone can be seen in the foundations and walls of a number of California landmarks including The State Capital and the old U.S. Mint in San Francisco.

Actually Penryn granite is from Penryn in Cornwall a couple of miles NW of Falmouth. It was quarried from the early 1800's and the granite was used to build London Bridge and the South Bank. It was also exported all over the world.

Don't blame the hardware for the way you use your PC.

You can't max out the cores?

That's no-one's fault and not the chip's.:p

Hey I tried to tell you but no, you had to go and jump on the bandwagon because everyone else was buying/clocking quads you thought you was missing out on something! :D

Anyway your right about people jumpin on others like a hungry wolf but at the end of the day, peer pressure aside you got to take responsibility for your own decisions. On the flip side no harm was done really, INTEL made a bit more money from you (as did your leccy provider) you got to have a play with some new tech and now you will probably be giving INTEL some more of your money for one of their new CPUs :o

As long as you understand that people who live/work/play in the computer biz tend to exaggerate everything, the review sites do it because their paychecks are tied to people buying hardware etc. Hype if fun, sometimes you can resist it and sometimes you can't.

Enjoy your Pasty! :)

DualCore is more than enough for most people tho with what they use their pc for, anymore cores = more juice & heat for nothing.

Yes, I suppressed a giggle when my friend (with far too much money) told me he had just bought a G0 Core2Quad CPU. I'm like you and waiting for that E8400.

It's January 2008 now so where the hell are they? I want one NOW!!!:D

I would imagine that someone like a professional video editor who uses the PC to make money would have loved the quads, I'm not 100% on what sorta stuff they do but I know that when I used to encode stuff it took quite some time so having a process that normally took 1 hour reduced to 30 mins using a quad would be a no brainer if this was something you did day in and day out.

Sadly I encode about 3 films a year and I am not in any rush for it. Once the whole industry gets stuff coded for multi core then Quads will really be a 'must have' but at this time for most of us this isn't the case.

I'm suprised even folding @ home doesn't take advantage of multi core? Just seems to run on one core?

Then u have to faff about loading up different units to run on each core? why not have all four cores working together on a work unit?

But complaining about quads when the user is not using the cores is what gets my goat.

People moan about the tech for no reason other than they feel hard done by for some odd reason.

My lappy is a P4M 2.0ghz All I do is surf the net nd check emails.I have no need to upgrade it.

My main PC is a completely difference beast all together.

Its the same for people who are running Vista 32 with 4 gig of ram. They do not need 4 gig of ram but they still buy the 4 gig kits for future use.

Quad is the same.OK most don't use the cores now but they will in the future.

Moaning about power and heat and all that is sad IMO.You had the stats and r3esults and the power requirements all for you to read up on.

Deal with it.

Can you really be that upset with a quad doing 3.8GHz? It's a shame you can't utilise it.

When dual cores were first out everyone thought that we would be encoding a DVD on one core and playing a game on another. Now games utilise 2 cores, could we have the game on cores 0 & 1 and the DVD/mp3/whatever encoding moved to cores 2 & 3?

I stand by my opinion regarding the 6850. Have you really lost out that much? And if 2008s games are more scaleable will you still regret not getting a 6850?

Hope games are more scaleable, as well as more OS and apps tasks.

I would be so happy to have even a dual core at that speed, I would bake a cake!

I'd be chuffed to have a dual core at 3.6GHz, but once you had that for a while its only natural to want something else.

Everyone likes to spend money, INTEL just make it real easy for us!

And can you really be that concerned about your leccy bills if you've splashed out (pardon the pun) on a water cooling rig?

Swap for my e6600 if you like ;)

Going by what is said in this thread i dont think that is was the guy was saying but saying the opposite that people get jumped on to buy a quadcore when they ask about buying a dualcore.

I don't mind paying the leccy bills (well i do really but that's another arguement) but i am paying for something that is sitting there with most of it doing nothing. Incedentally, i went from a E4300 at 3.4ghz to this quad. Really did'nt like putting so much voltage through it and thought the extra cache would make a difference. As for the watercooling, that is still the same setup from my 754 days. Nothing at all added. One GPU block taken out as i was running sli on the Epox 754 sli board with a pair of 7800GT's then. If more developers got it into their heads that most people have multi cores now and encoded their games and software accordingly then i would'nt be bemoaning the quad. As it stands at the moment, we are no further on now than when dual cores first came out.

Easy, you were probably the worst offender for "persuading" people to move to quads. Anybody suggested an E6750/6850 and you jumped down their throats telling them how stupid they were. All these people were saying that they mainly game and yet they were still labelled "stupid" for considering anything else.
