How can they say no jobs will be lost as a result of store closures?

Probably a high staff enough turn over and other stores nearby to accommodate within the group.

Every urban area near here has about 5-9 CPW stores including a couple in a pc world within a 3-6 mile radius. Plus typically 2-3 currys / pc world.

House of Frasier closing 31 stores as part of its CVA to get an influx of cash from it's chinese owners.

This on the back of M&S announcing 100 stores to close.

Looks like the high street is being hammered by the online market. Not surprising really, with the difference in overheads required.

I said this over 5 years ago. Why sit in traffic for an hour, pay £7 car parking, walk through the high street to whichever shop you want to go in, take another 30mins trying to find a member of staff only then to be sold "sorry sir, that item is out of stock but we can order it in for you". Versus spending 5mins online and ordering it. Plus, if anything isn't right, it's much easier to return an item online than it is in store.

Not sure it is just the online market - last month or two people just don't seem to be spending generally not sure what it is - I think partly the inconsistent weather.

Why do some of these people work there for literally decades? Do they not realise that management couldn't give a **** about them? They are just numbers on a sheet inside an outdated accountancy program.

Theres a good reason why they usually get told they're fired by the News rather than their boss.

Maybe they are happy with their jobs?

To be fair though, most managers care more about the company/profits/themselves over their staff

even in the public sector, it's turning a bit nasty with all the government cuts starting to bite. Watch closely in 2019.

We had separate Curry's, PC World and Carphone Warehouse stores all within a 5 minute drive of one another. Curry's and PC World had been opposite each other for a good few years. Within the last 6-9 months all three have been consolidated into the Curry's store. I'm actually quite surprised it took so long to consolidate the stores into one to be honest, as it must make sense from an operating costs perspective.

I've seen EE stores pop up in Argos. Think they must be sharing costs.

Our town centre Argos store shut up shop and moved into the big Sainsburys which is only slightly out of town. No doubt this saved the group money. From the consumers point of view it meant that Sainsburys reduced it's stock lines to accommodate Argos coming on board.

Poundworld went into administration yesterday.

New Look announced a profit fall of 20% including online sales. So clearly something else is going on with them rather than just an issue with the high street.

Edit: Poundworld (not Poundland).

People just don't seem to be spending money - 2017 was challenging but the last few months things have really stagnated for a lot of retailers.
