New Mac Products 7th August

Anyone know when these updated models are available in their stores? Was planning on going to one on thursday to get a macbook but think im also going to pick up a mac mini if they have any updated ones?

But you can already buy those things by choosing them when you buy the Mac Pro. There's no point in Apple making new SKUs for stuff that's been available for ages already.

Thats the point. The iMac outspecs the Mac Pro apart from with processors.
An X1900 graphics card upgrade costs around £270~ for a year and half old card. The machine comes with little RAM and a small HDD as standard. Its bad value for money at the moment.

I'm going to wait for a Penryn iMac, although I still can't believe a Core 2 Extreme chip made it into the lineup. I never thought I'd see the day!

That is a nice touch but it's a shame they're not giving you the 2900 XT or something to go with it! Steve says "We don't offer stripped down products."

Have to say I want a new iMac soooo bad!!

I might just hold off until Christmas and buy in the new year, but damn, I could sell my MBP and buy a max'd 24 incher tomorrow

Love the new design, comes with a nice base spec too!

I doubt they'd be available for a good 3-5 days instore as they have to be shipped to the retail stores.

Saying that, if they've already been shipped and are waiting to be put on display then it could be as soon as tomorrow.

Best bet is to ring the store nearest you and ask about availability :)

Are these delivered from abroad or does Apple have the stuff in the UK?.....I'm now tempted by the high end Mini and it ships within 24 hours......Just wondered if i could have got one before Friday......I go back to work Monday, delivery would be a pain in the rear then :o :D

It's hard to tell, benchmarks are understandably non-existent seeing as you're running a pirated, hacked version of an operating system against the terms of the license ;)

What do you use the machine for? Core 2 Duo's wipe the floor with pretty much anything AMD have, but if your current machine is running on RAIDed SCSI drives then obviously you're not going to notice a night-and-day difference by buying an iMac.
I got OSX86 onto this machine to test it as I wanted a Mac but didn't want to spend all that money and not like it after a while using it. I've now fell in love with it and willing to part with my money for a new iMac.

I can run xBench and get results which seem to be pretty high in comparison to the old iMacs, other than my harddrive, but I can't find any results for the new i Macs yet.

What updates are you after? They've pretty much put the best Intel have to offer in there. You're after something that Apple can't provide you with.

3Gb ram for the price of 1gb?

HD 2900XT or a 8800GTX?

If im spending £2k on a computer, I want the best! It has the best processors now I want the best graphics and mem aswell!

Im going into the apple store sometime soon in London to find out whats going on and try and get everything I want for less. Worth a try at least.

So is that 2400XT powerful enough to run older games like Half Life 2 at full-res of 1680x1050? And what about newer RTS like Command & Conquer 3? How would it do with Bioshock or Halo 2?

No, it would suck on all those massively big style. Its an awful card. I suspect 1680x1050 with all details turned off and just a wireframe :D

Yet if your not bothered about how it looks, it can probably run HL2 at that res with everything turned off.

whats OSX86. I assume its OS X for Intel/AMD PCs ?

Can you get Tiger OS X ?
OSX86 is basically a cracked OS X version for PC users.

I take it it wont run silky smooth then. I would love a high performance Mac workspace but my Powerbook G4 just can't hack todays demanding requirements and I cant afford a iMac or MacPro yet.
Well it runs smooth if you have patience and the right hardware. For example, I had a x1950 pro but in OSX it was terrible because of no support, I popped in my old 7300 GS and it was great, and works a treat. My mobo doesn't support sound so I had to buy a USB sound card, plus it doesn't support my ethernet on my mobo so I had to use a PCI ethernet card. Though my AMD is fully supported and runs just as fast as most Mac's with intels.

It can be a lot of hassle, and maybe not worth it.
