New member, First build! What are your thoughts?

I want a SSD!!!!!!

I've decided that it would be a shame not too!!!!!

So now I'm looking for a 60gb SSD, and maybe a 500gb HDD. All for under £150! And the HDD needs to be very quick too....and quiet as possible!

Is this asking too much?

Are you going for a Z68 board? In this case you could get a small 30GB SSD, and the biggest HDD you can for the price. Then the Z68 board can use the SSD to speed up the hard drive (you don't "see" the SSD in Windows, once set up it does it for you).

That's one idea, or get an M4 60GB SSD for Windows and another HDD.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 64GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT064M4SSD2) £87.98
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £69.98
Total : £167.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

H67? Okay don't worry about that bit don't worry. What I specced above is probably what you want. Put the SSD in, set SATA mode to ACHI, install windows. Then add the HDD after :)

Will be a speedy system with an SSD!

How reliable are Seagate?? What is ACHI?

Seagate are good :)

ACHI is a mode on the motherboard, for the SSD to run at full speed. Don't worry, when you get the system we can help put it together/set it up properly with you if you like.

How quiet are seagate then?

Cool. That would be awesome. I think I might buy my mobo at the end of this month so I can get the ball rolling!!

I think I might have to go for the SSD + HHD combo just because I can't resist!! + I can't wait to see my mates face when he sees how fast my PC is compared to his £1000 MAC! lol

That is true yes :) You'll fit a few programmes on the 60GB, but some may have to go on the hard drive. That's no problem though and Windows will still be nice and fast :)

As long as I can get my 2 main programmes on their I'll be happy :)

Would I see any difference if I used an eco drive? Just thinking it might keep the noise down!

If you really need to buy piecemeal then try to bear these things in mind.

Buy case and PSU first as they won't change greatly in 6 months.

Then HDD as they do advance but hold there value

Then the main trinity of MOBO,CPU,MEM as these tend to come as a package to some degree ie certain mobos will use specific socket cpus and a certain type of ram.

If you leave these items to last you shouldn't be too far behind the advancement curve.

Please DO NOT purchase the components unless you have ALL of the money ready to spend. If you do you'll very much regret that decision when you find out that you could have saved money/purchased more with the money you had. I know it's tempting, but in my opinion it's quite stupid. If parts are not working you won't be able to RMA after thirty days (correct?) and you'll have to send back to the manufacture.

Please, please, please take my advice and post back when you have the money for a new system spec. You'll get much more when prices drop and new hardware is released.

Sorry Mike! I forgot to mention that I found a very quiet PSU that seems to have only good reviews! So I'll say I'm 90% sure I'm getting the Nexus RX-6300!!

MissileMoose: I can't save up the money, I'm in the process of buying a house as well so any money left untouched will be gone! I will have at least a year warranty on all products so I can send them back under warranty!

I don't think I will regret it just because this set-up should be very quick and last me a while.
