New member, First build! What are your thoughts?

That's what I thought, but it does say compatible with intel i7. Is their an i7 that is compatible with this socket?

Theres the i7 8** series, which you may find second hand, but a Sandybridge based CPU (i5 2500/i7 2600 etc) will be faster/less power hungry

What's the difference between cheap RAM and expensive RAM if they have the same spec? Is it build quality?

Got an example?

To be honest as long as its from say Corsair/Crucial/Kingston/Gskill (and a few others) then you cant go wrong.

If you intend to buy parts individually over time this will work out more expensive. Some of us as loyal forum members get free delivery.....you don't. So that is an added expense each time you make a purchase. Even if it's just £10 let's say that could be as much as £40 wasted depending how many deliveries you have. Money that could have gone into parts ;)

If you insist on doing it this way. Start with a case and PSU, you can short the pins with a paper clip to test that the PSU fires up (google it).

Then as mentioned before do the mobo, cpu and RAM together. You want to aim for atleast one of the cheap Z series mobos. Many of the H67 mobos are the same price as the cheap Z mobos so it's false economy going for one really.

In regard to your RAM question. Some RAM sticks are designed with overclocking in mind, so have "aggressively styled" heatspreaders on them, best avoided usually as they can cause headaches with some CPU heatsinks. There are also types with LEDs on to show the RAM working.

The guys here will happily spec you what you need as you need it. There are weekly as well as daily offers, so what we suggest often varies because of this. We are happy to explain why we choose what we do, all you need do is ask :)

I found the daily/weekly offers the other day!! It's great!

So how do I become a loyal member?

Everyone has already been a lot of help and it makes it so much easier having the people with the know-how to answer specific questions!

So you suggest I buy the PSU next? (I've already bought the case and a few other bits like fans)

Do you really need the heatspreader?

At the moment I'm getting 16GB Corsair RAM for £60 so the HyperX is slightly more expensive.

Edit: Just checked and it has gone up to £67.13!! Is RAM on the up??

Top right of the forums webpage has a link to click. "free shipping for loyal forum members". You have to be a member for X amount of time and have X amount of posts. Click the link to get the details.

We come here to help each other out, that's the whole point. Once you get more experience you will be able to help others with your practical experience too :)

I think it's best to do it all in one as I said before. If you are doing it in "installments" then yes a PSU is probably the next logical step. You need to consider now what your requirements are. A 650W PSU is a pretty safe bet to cover any GPU and CPU combination you might choose.

In all honesty, i think you should wait. Just put the money in premium bonds or something to stop you spending it. You can then recover the cash when you want to buy ALL your needed parts.

I understand the reason to save up and buy everything at once but I know if I do, my girlfriend will make me spend it on the new house or on a holiday!! If I buy it in parts then she can complain all she likes, I'll still have my PC!!!!

I'm not planning on getting a GPU so 650W should be plenty!

I don't want this to sound funny but your so so so wrong! lol

Your way, you are paying over the odds for what you are getting. Put the money aside either in premium bonds or an offshore account so she cant touch it lol

Our way is cheaper so the difference in price between your way and our way can be used for GAT (Girlfriend added tax). It's a win win, when she has some money to either have a day at a spa or buy some new shoes with her mates and have a pub lunch. Then you are free to get down to the serious business of getting the kit up and running before she gets back ;)
