New North Korea pics

The point i was raising was that we all (or a large number of people) appear to take on face value, second hand information that may or may not have been massaged to tell a certain amount of truth.

Remember, communist Russians all thought the west lived in poverty.

So are you saying that we in the UK live in poverty and the media dumb down NK because they have a better quality of life?

Or are you simply saying the media aren't doing this however you need to watch out for it?

If so please provide me with examples that the UK media has shown people from other countrys to live in poverty to make us feel better about our living situation which through the power of free speech and the fact it would be very hard to hide the facts has been proven wrong.

I've said it before and i'm going to say it again, some people need to visit some countrys with state controlled media and then come back to the UK, you don't know how good we've got it!

I'm not saying either of the things you are suggesting that i'm saying.

I'm saying media portrayals of other countries, especially the 'baddies' are to be taken with a massive pinch of salt.

Not so long ago, one of these countries had weapons of mass destruction, and now a million of their people are dead as a result .... and no WOMD have been found.

What the **** are you rambling on about? This has got nothing to do with Iraq.

There's been independent groups of people that have travelled to NK and documented it. They haven't faked the video they shot. It is a very deprived country. There's no "Western propaganda" going on.

I've always found North Korea fascinating, Quite worrying about the dark goings on within though.

Libya and Tunisia were perhaps comparable examples. The difference here was that their inept governments were stupid enough to allow their citizens access to the Internet, the most potent "weapon of mass dictatorship destruction" of the 21st century. Unfortunately the NK regime is a little more clued up.

I saw these pictures a few days ago, very very fascinating. I can't help but think if I had the money, which I do not, I'd seriously consider going there, even if you are watched & minded everywhere. It just looks so fascinating.

I don't think it costs a huge amount. I gather the easiest way in is via China.

China isn't exactly in the Benidorm-level cost department to get to itself you know :p

Well yeah its £400 ish rather than £40 but not talking 'thousands' to get there. Surprised there isn't a package deal for us weirdos that want to go to rubbish places like this :)

It seems that flickr account is linked to a group which has 13,000 photos on it - http://www.flickr.com/groups/dprk/pool/page1. Never seen so many of NK before. Must have relaxed the rules a little, as I read several times people have had their cameras taken off them before.

Hey guys check out this video! This reporter from Nat Geo went into NK posing as a member of a medical team...really fascinating glimpse into that country.

Is that the one with the indian eye doctor? He goes in and sorts out peoples cataracts or something and when they're better they waddle off and praise the huge picture of Kim Jong Il for letting them see again?

I saw an interesting documentary quite a while ago that was about some Japanese Eye surgeon who was allowed to practice there for a very short time, not sure if it was just a couple of days. ( i think he was part of some AID program)

You got the jist of what the common people have to endure there. It showed an Elderly lady who had been blind for more than 20 years and once her sight was restored the first think that she did was praise The Leader.

yikes that documentary is in the other guys link.

The pictures of the children were really quite creepy, but I feel sorry for everyone there. No-one can choose where they are born, so they should be free to move.

I found that video really depressing and it wound me up NO END when all those people whose eyesight was saved - thanked the "dear leader" by hollering and bowing at his potrait. None of them thanked the Nepalese surgeon who slaved for 10 days and treated 1000 people. One of them fell to her knees in front of the picture and said:

"Oh great leader I work in the salt mines! Now that I can see I will work HARDER in the mines so you can have your salt!"

Brainwashing that those mentalist evangelists on late-night TV can only DREAM about.

Those poor NK people...
