Would you say the 4250u is worth the £55 premium over the 4010u?

The 4010u seems to be around E6600, and the 4250u beating an E8600.

Now I owned an E8400 many moons ago, and I recall it being significantly more beefy than any E6xxx offering.

The machine would be pretty much only taxed for use with Traktor 2 Pro.

Almost certainly worth the £55 premium. Remember that the i5-4250U also includes better integrated graphics (HD 5000) over the i3 chip (HD 4400).

I have the i5-4250U, and the way I justified the additional £70:

- Stretched over 3-5 years lifespan, not a big deal
- Better graphics, slightly more likely to support e.g. 4k in the future

Omar I was going to go for the haswell nuc, took about 6 months ;)

But quick question, how do you find the multi-tasking side of it?

Lets say if you surf 4-5 websites, downloading isos/large files in background and stream 1080p all at the same time ?

Am trying to get the feel if its going to replace a quad core (core i5 2500) pc I have....

In terms of raw processing power, your i5-2500 is roughly 2x more powerful than the Haswell i5 NUC. The key difference is that the NUC idles at 6W, whereas your system probably idles closer to 50 or 60W. The i5 NUC would be comparable in processing power to an ultrabook, which focuses on balancing performance with extremely low power consumption. I don't know if a desktop PC has those same requirements (low power consumption), and given how limited the NUC is in terms of expansion, are you sure it's a worthwhile upgrade (more like side/downgrade)?

EDIT: Looks like you'll have to copy/paste that URL.

Yup its the big question I have right now, is the nuc good enough for a desktop replacement or not.

I have 65watts @ idle right now but a 6watt idle computer which is fanless appeals to me, but id hate to see it struggle during multi site web browsing and 1080p playback, especially after paying 600 quid!

Course am tempted to have a dedicated gaming pc and surfing/mp3/movie box:D

Hopefully omar and few others will get back to me on it....

I have certainly surfed with 8+ tabs open in Chrome, downloading in the background and streaming (Netflix full HD or football Flash based streams) without any issues.

thanks I had a feeling this was the case, I watched a few youtube vids and tbh I could not note any speed drop down everything looked instant when clicked upon....

Obviously with 8gig ram or more and an ssd, multi-tasking should not really be any issue with a dual core 2.6ghz cpu.

Am eyeing the Akasa Tesla H Aluminium Fanless Case with dual 2.5 bay drive support :)

I hate how those Akasa cases require all those cables; I don't understand why they don't make the cases exactly the depth of the motherboard, like the Tranquil PC ones. And I have an Akasa case for a mini-ITX motherboard, which is working great. But these NUC ones are just poorly designed.

not to bothered with the inside cables since its closed but I too would have liked to see akasa make one to the same size as the nuc but then I guess cooling and passive wise it would never work, yeah that larger design just makes it able to dissolve the heat.

I still like that akasa case I think its the first one to have 2x2.5 drives and you can also pick up that msata>sata adaptor.

I may go for it will look at finances soon :)

The 4250u is the chip that powers the midrange i5 13" Macbook Air. I've been using the i7 version for the last 6 months, it's absolutely fine for lots of tabs in browsers, VMs, HD streaming and some gaming. It gets a bit toasty when you push the gaming (WoW) to high settings, day to day use it's snappy and fine. Plex is also fine, it rarely even stretches its legs. The i5 isn't much slower.

BIOS 0025 is out today.

My NUC is requiring a 5 sec delay on SATA else it fails to find a bootable device, not sure if it has anything to do with the 4 USB devices attached... need to test more.
