New NUC, HD5000, 4x USB 3.0, infrared sensor

I was lurking this thread for a while waiting for news of availability, then tuned out again when I got hold of my NUC last week.

At first I was put off by the fan noise and thinking about getting a fanless case, then I played around in the BIOS settings and reduced the minimum fan speed from 40% to 20%. This has pretty much silenced the NUC (I have it in a quiet bedroom and now can't hear it until I'm within a few inches), and shouldn't cause any harm as it's still allowing the fans to spin up when needed.

The only flaw for me now is that when the NUC wakes from sleep, the fan seems to be locked at 100% speed which is audible again. Given the speed of the thing, it's quick enough to reboot and clear the issue, but it'd be nice to have a proper solution. Has anyone else seen this? (Running Win8.1 Pro)

A nice feature of the consumer IR is that you can turn the NUC on with a remote even from a powered-off state, not just sleep.

Just ordered mine! Hopefully here by Wednesday!

I can't wait. Going to be using it as my main day to day PC running Arch. I'm not overly bothered about noise right now but knowing that those fanless cases are out there is comforting.

Well thanks to all the info on this thread I've managed to avoid a bunch of mistakes :) Mini HMDI adapter ordered for the TV, 1.35v RAM too and tips for the USB installation. Found one in stock today so cancelled a previous order. Parts should be with me next week.

What remote do you use I haven't looked into it yet. Is it any Microsoft Media Remote ?

Thanks

Yeah, I'm using a years-old Microsoft MCE remote, but I guess newer MCE-branded remotes should work? It seems like you can't get hold of the Microsoft ones anywhere anymore (at least, I can't find a like-for-like replacement and this is 6 years old).

Been using my i3 NUC for a year or so and it's still awesome. I use OpenElec with the Xbox 360 MCE remote (Little black revised one). Brilliant little devices.

Did this get fixed by chance?

Sounds like a bios upgrade is required, maybe worth checking if there is one available.

Or try speedfan software to control the fan on the nuc ?

That is a nice touch on the IR, would have imagined universal remotes or tv remotes perhaps having a way to also work.

There is a new BIOS available on the Intel site, I'll give it a try on my NUC.

Release notes: http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23337/eng/WY_0021_ReleaseNotes.pdf

 Fixed Fast Boot issue.
 Changed default values for Over-Temperature Threshold, Control
Temperature (°C), All-On Temperature (°C).
 Fixed issues with Windows 8.1* WHCK tests: Hardware Reserved
Memory Test, Secure Boot Logo Test, and Secure Boot Manual Logo
Test.

My NUC had the initial BIOS on it to begin with.

Ah brilliant thanks. Just ordering one now.

Seems some fanless chassis' are getting discounted from cyber monday, VAT still a killer though :(

palaw: You should be aware that it appears that it only has one antenna output at the back, which you will need to buy an adaptor for (mini-PCIe U.FL to SMA) plus the SMA antenna itself, adding another £5-£10, plus you will lose Bluetooth functionality from the card if it supports this (I confirmed this today).

The Streacom NC1 case supports two antennas with the extra internal antenna add-on.

Mine has arrived. Will keep you all posted. It's a lot more shiny than the pictures on the web, tiny but quite heavy. Nice solid build.

I don't use wireless, and probably never will.

Even with that said, after thinking about it, I think I prefer the NC-1, the power button in the same place + a bigger ir window(?) looks better...and I expect its cheaper too? Have you got/ordered a fanless case yet, or at least thinking of one? I think I might wait to see what the NC-3 is like before buying something.

There is only one Haswell NUC fanless case 'available' at the moment. The Streacom one won't be available until the end of this month or January in the UK according to them.

I will almost certainly get one.

The updated BIOS seems to have improved the fan noise a bit, although at the moment I have the NUC in the same room as my newly upgraded desktop that has it's fans on full pelt until my fan controller arrives so it's hard to tell!

Yeah I thought it was, I think I'll end up getting the Streacom one, need to figure out how much bigger it is than the Intel case.

I don't think the fans are that bad, its just when they do spin up and I can hear them, when the room is quiet (and that isn't very often) its just a bit annoying and I sorta of think I should just get a fanless one and be done with it.

Do they really reduce the temperature over the stock cases too? Or is that just under extreme cases (100% load / old dusty filled fans)?

Only way to know for sure is for someone to get one and report their findings ;)

I'm surprised there aren't many posts online about how people got on with the previous gen NUC in fanless cases.

NUC up and running, fast and working perfect with XBMC on Win 8.1 via displayport to HDMI cable.

One issue I'm having is that it won't enter sleep on it's own. powercfg -requests doesn't show anything. Enters sleep fine if sleep is selected, but not on it's own after an amount of time. Is this working for you guys?
