New NUC, HD5000, 4x USB 3.0, infrared sensor

Liliputing have some cool stuff on. They have a you tube channel which has some good stuff / demos on.

Just hate waiting for these cases to be released.

Don't think we will get much more news on cases this year and I doubt many will get released before next month now. Given how much the NUC was delayed I would be surprised if the 'larger' nuc gets released this year too, that December date was back when the NUC was suppose to be out late October.

Still, I much prefer waiting for a case after having the NUC than waiting for the NUC with little to no information regarding a release date :)

Yeah its going to take time for all these new cases to arrive perhaps by jan/feb even in 6 months time will be many cases still its great to see them being made and due soon you only need one passive case :)

I would have loved to see an core i7 4core haswell nuc but it would never work on an nuc and cost will be far to high. I have a feeling the baytrail should be cheaper and less power and the 4 core pentium maybe faster but its a mini itx form factor...but will see:)

I can't see why they couldn't do an i7, I get a feeling that the i5 haswells are really popular. If they can stuff the i7 into a macbook air, it should indicate they can do the same into the NUC (it's the same proc after all, one of the few machines out there with HD5000 graphics)

The i7s they did before were only dual cores though if I recall correctly, could not see some 4 core ones.

I think with the new baytrails and mini itx baytrail desktops and kits they may just very well tempt me that way, they got some serious kits arriving. 10watt 2.4ghz quad cpus :) and already a supermicro mobo with 8 core baytrail 2.4ghz cpus @ 20watts, these are some serious power at similar wattage compared to haswell nucs !

But of course size is much bigger(mini itx) still if I get much more performance ie highend desktop and beyond for similar cost it may just tempt me to wait till feb/march for them.

Will see, intel may surprise us with a core i7 full 4 core haswell in a nuc.... but doubt it

I that is true, the i7 in the Air is 2 core, 4 thread like the i5. Just looked a bit more carefully at the specs, can't really see that much difference apart from the processor cache.

Bail trail looks nice but don't forget HD5000 graphics in these chips. Wondering if it will manage 4k video.

Edit: just found this:

Which mentions they tested 4k video at 24fps.

I know a few on you have already done this but just Lowered the Min Fan Speed to 0%.....

What a difference - Runs almost silent, unless under heavy load obviously. Can def recommend doing this.

I've been eyeing up these for ages.

I think it's getting close to me wanting to update my passive VIA Epia based system, it's about 10 years old and definitely can't cope with hi-def playback!

Yup that is almost the trick... that mac and many notebooks and highend laptops will have core i7 cpus which are dual core with 4 threads only.

Not that its terrible it will be plenty for most.

I just do multi-tasking and open up many programs and browsing windows, tbh even the haswell nuc would most likely do just like the quad and 4 core aspect of it.

These bay trails in theory should be faster due to 4 cores and less wattage and passive by default, but atm its all theory until a review. With 4 cores it would make a great desktop pc replacement.

I'm finding it fine at 40. It's behind the telly and I can't hear it unless there is no sound coming through when I can hear a small whirl. I also found the changes in pitch for the wind up / wind down of the fan more distracting that the sound itself. At 40 it stays constant playing Netflix which I found better.

The box is a very nice touch indeed. Although I had to put mine away in a cupboard, it was triggering with sunlight while sitting on my coffee table, that got old pretty quickly!

These look awesome for their size, Intel NUC D54250WYK and that Gigabyte Gigabyte BRIX GB-XM11-3337 look really decent. Do AMD offer anything similar with APU's?

They do exist but rare and not really seen any for sale

AMD are also releasing some new quad soc type cpus to counter the baytrails but I believe they are due in spring/summer. These are soc type cpus, will be interesting to see the performance between them and the haswell nucs.

I've been running my i5 version for about a week now with XBMC and I have to say that I'm very happy compared to my Pivos XIOS I replaced.

I did notice tho that you have to set XBMC to use true screen and not a full screen window, or it'll crash on resume from sleep.

Has anyone had any issues with the IR? I'm getting an issue where the Harmony remote sends a command, but nothing happens. 10 seconds or so later and it becomes responsive to commands again. It's very odd and I can't seem to track down why or what triggers the lack of response. If I switch my wireless keyboard on then Win8 and XBMC are working fine, so it's gotta be an IR related issue. The Harmony works flawlessly when it's on it's Sky activity, so I'm fairly sure it's not the remote.

The only other IR annoyance is that every time I switch the NUC on the XBox also fires up :-(

Not noticed any issues with XBMC but mine wont sleep if XBMC is running so never noticed it.

Not really used the IR either. Got a media centre remote had a play, wakes up from off which is good. Seem to work with xmbc no problems, no delays all fine. I'm using a Logitech K400 keyboard + trackpad instead which I prefer.

I got chance to play again today and now know why it's behaving like it is, but I don't understand it.

If I aim the Harmony directly at the box, which is under the TV, then it will practically ignore all commands. However if I point the remote away from the NUC, at the wall, ceiling, etc. then every time the IR signal gets to the NUC and XBMC works and moves through the menus.

Very odd, but it works a treat now.

The NUC is sleeping well and recovering into XBMC without issue. It's all setup on the Harmony activities. Only issue I did have is after a full reboot if XBMC is launched as a startup command then it won't see my library correctly. I've dropped the launch to a batch file with a 8 sec delay and that's sorted it all out now.

Just need to figure a way around the XBox turning on now and the NUC will be my best buy this year...

I had the same problem, but now I get XBMC to do the sleeping and not Win8. I set it to suspend after 30 mins and it's doing exactly that. If I don't set any power options in XBMC and let Win8 control the power, it just never seems to sleep. I'm sure there will be a setting in the OS that needs overriding, but now XBMC does it I've not bothered to look.
