New OcUK Website

   It's not nostalgia, OCUK, old site was alway's my 1st point of call when checking out new stuff, simple well laid out and informative, I have suggested to many other online retailers to go see OCUK website(old 1), for a demonstation of how a good site should be.
I suspect some tech head's have got a grip of this and just done things to the site just because they can, we're not interested in how clever you are and what you can do ,we just want an easy site.
I bet you sales will drop now.
Bring back the old one.

I much prefer the old style

It was just easier to find what you wanted and JUST what you wanted - as already mention why do you need a section at the top that shows you the 'most popular items' ? i dont care about them thats not what im looking for

Im not saying its rubbish just looks a little cluttered

The only reason this thread has remained open is because SPIE is obviously studying the responses of the changes.
If we go back to other threads in the past I can remember how most people didn't like the OCUK site and a change was in order.
Perhaps we should have a poll.

Add me to the "don't like the new version" column - the new site just looks cheap and tacky. The old version may have taken a bit more navigation, but it looked like the people who put it together cared, whereas this could be anyone's site.

Yes a poll,
OCUK as had 2 advantages over that other retailer,
1. the forum
2.There OLD Superior Site.
But the disadvantage was, slightly higher delivery.
This may sound unbelievable but I have often paid slightly more for stuff at OCUK, for the 2 above reasons.
So the other retailer has now gained a point in my eyes, I hate this type of layout, bring back the old one.

I haven't read the other 15 pages so apologies if I'm just repeating what loads of other people said but my opinion:
Though the site looks a little more modern it is harder to find what you want, one of the things I liked about the old system was big large pictures and easy to read descriptions all on the same page, none of this generic listings and click for description stuff.

System specs and that kind of thing were really easy to do and getting a "picture" of current prices and products will be that much harder now with them spread between pages and such.

What he said ^
Why make yourself look like all the other e-tailers ?
Main reason i use ocuk is because of the great site :(

Over 10,000 thread views , should have a poll, see what the punters think :)

That is almost Identical to an E-tailor down here :D

Did you use some Web design company, Buy the Company down here out or just coincidence  :D :p

Suck it and see argument has no weight.

The suck it and see argument is nonsense as well.
What your forgetting is when you've not had stuff in, I have spent many many hours browsing lot's of other sites with this kind of layout, and I was oh so glad to get back OCUK's site.
We are all well aware of this type of layout, but most of us just dont like it,
it may be moving with the times, but who said the times are right?
Change it back before OCUK is stereo typed, and looses it appeal.
Your not just another e- retailer, your OCUK!!!!

This site is better whether you're looking for a particular, single product or whether you're browsing all of them, though.

In the first case, you get to the site, enter the product name in the prominent search form, and that's it—one step, done. Before, you'd have to either drill down the categories to get to the product, or find the search box which wasn't even prominently linked to never mind on every page.

In the second case, the new site is much easier to compare products—since the category display displays much less information than the old one and is thus much more compact—which means you can quickly see what the cheapest product of type X is or what have you. This just wasn't possible with the old system, which required tons of scrolling to see the prices of each product and even then there was no way to see all of them at once.

These are things that are objective—not subjective like the visuals—and it is impossible to deny that the new site is more usable than the old. It requires less steps to get to products regardless of how you're looking for them, and is totally intuitive.

Don't be an idiot. Constructive comments, please.

Apart from the stuff I've said before:

  • Make an advanced search. I want to be able to limit search results by price, manufacturer, etc. and also choose in what order the results are returned. You can sort of do this with the category filters, but an advanced search would be even better.
  • Linked to the above: make the search a FULLTEXT one. This allows users to use wildcards, addition, subtraction, etc. in search queries, making it even easier to narrow down results; I want to be able to search "akasa fan -blue" to find all non-blue Akasa fans, for example.
  • You've added more ways to find products, but add even more. "Find more products by <manufacturer>", "Customers who viewed/bought this product also viewed/bought:", a list of compatible parts on component pages (so there'd be a list of compatible RAM, CPUs and GPUs below a motherboard, for example), etc. etc. The more ways people can find your products, the more likely they are to buy them—as I said before, rely on the impulsive extra purchase people make when you give them good recommendations.

That's all I've got off the top of my head :)

Did you get a local company to do it? If so, please tell me who 'cause I could do with a job next summer (or even working via the 'net in term time) and I'll see if they've got room for a PHP developer :k

While he is ill mannered and poorly expressed, he does have a point. Overclockers used to have a VERY distinctive look, whereas the style is now very similar to competitors.
I think that the new website is functionally better, yet believe that some of the graphics are slightly less attractive, namely those strange striped backgrounds on some of the pictures.
Also, I feel that the new page is TOO busy, too many pictures (such as the little one advertising the forums).

I prefer simplicity when surfing.

Watch me do the impossible :) The new site might just take a bit of getting used to but I don't find it easier and more usable. I preferred the simple buttons and the fact that all information about the product was available immediately in each products 'folder' so I could for instance see all the features of a motherboard compared to another one on the same page(by the same manufacturer only though). The new site also has a few problems it appears with descriptions needing updated or even that the contain the wrong information totally, this is to be expected though for a redesign I guess (example at the bottom of this page about a compact flash card which doesn't belong there).

Although this is a minor point it is also less helpful than before when doing a system specification for someone as the formatting means you get the price of each item about 3 times and it isn't as clear. However that isn't something that will affect too many people probably.

This thread just made me realise the site has changed :)
First impressions, like others have said, it does look like any other e-tailer now.
On the plus side, I do prefer the navigation options now.
I'll have to have bit more of a play.

I think that there's something better than either the old way or the new way, though. Keep the current compact product list, but then add the comparison feature I talked about above. Much easier to compare products in detail, and much easier to view the products list.

The old method wasn't very good for comparisons, because you could only compare products from one manufacturer to others from the same manufacturer—something you're far less likely to do than compare products from different manufacturers, since competition between manufacturers is much more common than a single manufacturer releasing two competing products.

Agreed. We will be making appearance changes over the next week but keeping/enhancing functionality.
