New Porcupine Tree album teaser up

I'm a massive prog fan but I came the route of ELP, Kansas, Yes, Grace, Dream Theater etc so I've missed out on Porcupine Tree.

Recommended listening?

In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet, Lightbulb Sun, Signify...

So many great album but each of them demands an absolute total full listen from start to finish, and they sort of need to be listened to more than once before you make your mind up about them.

Enjoy! They are awesome! :)

I've got a few of their songs lying about. Namely Lazarus, Halo and Trains. Really enjoy the style and mellow feel.

Definitely liking the teaser!

I really should go about collecting more songs.

They're like a mix between Radiohead, Floyd, Breaking Benjamin, Black Crowes and Silverchair.

They're really not prog cliché prog to be honest, the frontman of PT (Steven Wilson) says he doesn't think PT should be described as prog, as the music is inherently simple and follows non of the usual prog clichés.

In my opinion the production, arrangement and often (especially with the latest album) the concepts and themes of the albums/songs are more progressive.

Basically this is besides the point, as anyone who's into good music should find something they like in PT. In Absentia / Fear of a Blank Planet, Lightbulb Sun (or Stupid Dream as the former is a hard to find) and Signify follow a good range of their more commercial sounding stuff, I've put the first 2 together as they're quite similar sounding, the next 2 are more acoustic/indie sounding, and the last is a more experimental album. There's also a good few other albums which are based around studio improvisations too and soundscapes which are also wonderful in their own special way (On The Sunday of Life, Voyage 34, The Sky Moves Sideways) :D

Basically, buy the entire discography and sit back, relax, and get ready for your socks to be blown off. :)

It's definitely growing on me the more I listen to it.

Only five hours to go before I meet up with my bro and mate and we "begin preparations" for the gig tonight :D

The Newcastle Academy hasn't got the best of sound systems, unfortunately (to be fair, I've only been there three times), but I'm keen to hear how some of the new tracks will sound live...

Considering I don't really like their genre they are pretty decent! (I usually say oh god they're crap if I don't like their genre)

Which genre would you say that is? Personally, I really can't categorise them. Classic Rock/New Rock/Prog Rock/Indie/Metal... To me they are the perfect blend of every type of rock you can imagine.

I just went with what it says on there MySpace page :D

Sleep Together has gone from being my least favourite to my favourite song. I've listened to each song about 20 times now according to iTunes :D

Well, I'm feeling a little gentle this morning, so forgive any blazing spelling/grammar mistakes!

What a quality night we had watching Porcupine Tree last night. Their opening act was a Spanish group called Amplify (I think) - nothing memorable, apart from the bass player who looked so stoned at one point I thought he was going to topple over :D

Once PT came on, the place exploded. We were stood off to one side, about 5 yards from the stage and cos we spent most of the warm-up act getting steadily drunker and by the time PT took the stage, the place was heaving - far busier than any other night I've been in there (Carling Academy in Newcastle if anyone was wondering).

They opened with Fears of a Blank Planet and (to my admittedly poor recollection) they played everything off the new album during the course of the evening. My brother and I both had tracks we wanted to hear - I wanted Arriving Somewhere (I only have the new album and Deadwing) while my bro wanted Blackest Eyes (I think it's called that, it was a bit loud :D ). He got what he wanted, but I didn't. There was plenty of older stuff - he played Open Car too, which I'd mentioned on the way there from the pub (and listened to on the walk into town), so that was canny. The guitarist actually sang a fair part of some songs and had a good voice, while SW bounced around with an acoustic guitar :D That drummer is seriously good as well.

As for the genre question, SW turned around at one point and said "More heavy metal later..." - so I think he recognises they're a big mix of all sorts of music. I have to admit, he is one talented singer/songwriter - I'm heading out later to get their entire back catalogue and spend a weekend in musical bliss!

In short, very, very impressive (and tight as hell too!) - they rocked! In my opinion, they seriously deserve to be a lot bigger than they are. Class act.

The only thing I hope they don't do in this album is start a track in one style, continue in that same style for 80% of the song, and then randomly dump 3 minutes of thrash metal which is completely unrelated into the song, then return to the original for the close.

"Arriving somewhere but not here" from the last album was almost a classic if it hadn't been completely ruined by the metal section at the end.

The end bit is really chilled out, there's a slight heavy bit about half way through the song?

The 'heavy' bit is about 6-7 mins in. Just doesn't work. It's like someone randomly slips in Metallica for 3 minutes of the song. Just doesn't flow. They should stick to the melody which they are good at.

It's definitely not fused together nicely, but being a listener of, "thrash" i'm not complaining.

Kinda like Iron Maiden producing a song that half way through turns into a dance track then returns to the original state just for the end.

Are you talking about the middle section of Anesthetize? I think it's brilliantly introduced and creates a strong dynamic contrast to the opening and closing sections, which bookend the heavy section. In my opinon the album would be quite sonically one sided apart from the opening track, which has it's fair section of heavy sections.

No. The section on "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here".
