New Star Trek series - 2017

Because none of the bridge bunnies have had much in the way of character development in two-and-a-half seasons. So they clearly weren't getting the job.

Sure, they gave Detmer PTSD and Owosekun got to go on at least one away mission. But that's about it.

Yes, but appointing Tilly makes no sense at all.

It could have been used as a way to bring in a new character, ie this is Jim from engineering, or Rosie from Supply or Casey Ryback the chef.

Or they could have gone for one of the bridge bunnies to give them that development and in which makes sense ie sulu/chekov would step up when needed. Or the Med Officer or Chief Science Officer - but **** me, Tilly is the absolute worse choice.

Can you tell this has annoyed me? :)

Why was it obvious Tilly would be offered the position?

She is a ridiculous option. Captain Saru steps off the bridge, then we are to believe Captain Tilly?

It's the Discovery way if your getting more screen time then any of the other bridge crew you'll be the obvious choice, gone are getting the rank on your merits for this season.

In-universe, I agree.

Nah. If they screwed up and created a compelling character then that might end up taking away screen time from Michael Burnham, Galactic Messiah, One True Light and Saviour of All™ ;):p It happened with Voyager, when they created Seven of Nine - the only way Robert Beltran's Chakotay could get any meaningful screentime after that was as a holodeck character that Seven used to explore dating...

I don't know that she is the worst choice, TBH.

Mary Wiseman has shown that she can hold her own in scenes opposite Doug Jones (who has stepped up his game as the real lead of the series since SMG hasn't/can't/won't) and Anthony Rapp (who was already very decent once the writers figured out how to write 'supreme self-confidence' instead of 'unearned arrogance'). She carried the scene with SMG's Burnham this week once again, though that's rather less of an achievement.

Besides, Tilly's been an Ensign for two-and-a-half seasons. They don't need to fall into the same old trap of leaving characters stuck at one rank in perpetuity. So far in-universe she has been responsible for/contributed to a bunch of discoveries (I make no apologies for that pun :)), saved the ship in the S2 finale by getting the shields going again, cracked the villain over his head with a bottle in the second episode this season and has grown enough to the point where she can ask armour-piercing questions of other characters without folding up.

She's certainly a better choice for the job than someone who can't even make it half an episode without going rogue, who can't clue her captain in ahead of time when she's about to do something that will have diplomatic repercussions and who has enough unresolved issues and existential crises racked up that she probably ought to be on medical leave.

She is loyal to Saru/Starfleet and has had to make some tough choices and come through, so as an aide to Saru, maybe.

But we are talking jumping ranks and most importantly, there will come a time when she needs to take the 'Chair'. As above compare her to the other series No 1's and you see how ridiculous it is.

The Admiral needs to take Discovery off these over emotional, renegade cretins.

I'm pretty sure they specifically said that she hasn't jumped ranks. She's still an ensign for whatever it's worth.

True - we'll see how this plays out :)

https://intl.startrek.com/article/number-one-list

From shore leave to a sudden death, various events can cause a first officer to sit in the big chair. Usually brief, these situations inevitably place the burden of command firmly on a Number One's shoulders. The most extreme example occurred during the Borg incursion depicted in the TNG two-parter "The Best of Both Worlds." With Picard assimilated by the Collective, Riker took charge over in unenviable conditions which entailed defeating the Borg, and facing off against the tactical knowledge the Borg absorbed from his mentor. After receiving advice from Guinan, Riker employed an unorthodox scheme that harnessed Picard's awareness of their previous plan to fool the Borg and successfully retrieve the captain. Riker magnificently adapted to the evolving hostilities and proved more than worthy to continue as the Enterprise-D's executive officer.

Well, that really is just dumb. Ought to at least have come with a promotion to Lieutenant j.g.

I imagine a few Lieutenants put in transfer requests next time they are at Starfleet over it, its like the CEO of a company making the junior admin clerk the temporary CEO :D

Maybe a better plot would have been to send someone over from Starfleet to act as No 1?

We could have had the are they/aren't they a spy. And then the flip when Starfleet issues an iffy order and the Starfleet No 1 sides with the Disco.

Could have brought in any actor for that role - a door wide open which Tilly got stuck in trying to waddle through.

It’s purely the way TV is nowadays. There has to be a gay couple, an Asian etc etc. In this case they want to show how an overweight ugly ginger girl can be successful in whatever they choose to do in life, despite how obviously fantastical that is.

You're right. That's way less believeable than a device that can take a person, rip up the matter that they're made from to turn it into energy, tunnel that energy to a new location, then take that energy and turn it back into the original matter without getting anything wrong (almost) every time.

:p

We can accept transporters because they are in the rules of the fictional universe. In what other Trek show would we ever see the captain of a Starfleet vessel promote an ensign to first officer? Tilly is so wet, it's no more believable than if they'd promoted the ship's cat.

I blame the JJTrek films, advancing Kirk all the way from Cadet to Captain ;)

I tried another episode again last night. Nope. Had to turn it off in boredom. I think I'm completely done with it now.

Her looks are a personal preference, the character she plays, however, is crap, is it her as an actress, or is it the writing, my bets the character is written poorly given how badly the rest of the thing is written...
