New summer transfer thread

Mixed feelings over the Heinze deal. Like i said last night, he's not desperately needed so its not a huge disappointment but would have loved to see Fergies face had he joined us :p

Hopefully that £7m will still be made available for Rafa, hopefully on another winger though.

Thanks Linoge, don't think im letting you off the £10 you owe me though ;) .

I think Riquelme is a class player and I think he is better than anything we currently have but 10m and he's 29 just don't see this happening. I think we still need to improve the squad but theres some faces that need to be let go first. I think not having a real Carrick replacement is hindering us the most, not sure if Zakora was bought as a direct replacement but he certainly isn't in the same class and does like to bomb forward (he can't hit a barn door though).

Tottenham
Hotspur injured players

Expected return dates

D Bent Thigh Strain 26th Aug 07
D Berbatov Groin Strain no return date set yet
T Tainio chest infection 26th Aug 07
Y Kaboul Hamstring Strain 15th Sep 07
M Dawson Sprained Ankle 26th Aug 07
B Assou-Ekotto Swollen Knee 15th Sep 07
A Lennon Cartilage Tear 26th Aug 07
G Bale Thigh Strain 26th Aug 07
L King Cartilage Tear 1st Oct 07

These players will hopefully be back on there set dates and will give the squad a boost. Really need Dawson back to face Man U, Lee did well on Saturday so at least we'd have 4 defenders playing in their natural positions.

So many returns on the 26th, almost as if we didn't want them getting called up for the Internationals? :D

I seem to remember Zokora was bought to play WITH Carrick, but obviously never got a chance to as he was sold.

I don't understand how Spurs fans can say they're 'strong' in Midfield.

There's a difference between being strong in midfield and having a lot of midfielders. You have the latter, however you don't have one midfielder close to being classed as World Class. Riqueleme would certainly be in that bracket.

I dont think we need another winger, pennant looked a bit gash during part of chelsea match but then he didnt half liven up, babel was invisible on the right which was worrying, then he got shoved over to the left, which is where hes best, and he looked promising.
We already have 3 wingers really, dont really want another!
We need another defender, i **** myself when we havnt got any real quality covering finnan, and i dont rate arbeloa at all, and riise isnt a defensive LB, Hyypia also wants to move on so he can get regular first team, so we need CB cover too!!

Arbeloa is fine, not sure why you think he's good enough. In most games he has been defensively solid and useful going forward. Riise and Aurellio are also fine at left back, I actually think Aurellio may overtake riise in the pecking order when he gets fit again, he was looking good before he got injured. I also remember Hyypia saying he will stay on another year and will be happy if he gets the same amount of games as last year.

hes already expressed a wish to move somewhere with more first team action, Id just rather have the replacement sooner than later, so time can be given for players to settle etc.
Arbeloa is basically filling in with aurellio, and hes nowhere near as good, though he has shown little glimmers of hope, but im still warey..
Aurellio will take a while to be back to his old self, i agree though, he probably will overtake riise, because he did start looking EXTREMELY promising, im a fan!
I think we just generally need someone who is defensively rated who can play well generally in the back line, Hyypia has given the club a good few years, but he is looking to move elsewhere, it will only make the club stronger if we find a fitting replacement and get them in ASAP!

I agree that we need cover at cb (not at lb or rb though) but i still think we're slightly short with attacking midfielders. With Garcia leaving, we've only got Gerrard who we can rely on for goals from midfield; im not a fan of Pennant at all, his crossing is poor (the simple cut back for Torres on Sunday, he managed to **** up) and doesn't score, neither will Benayoun and we can't rely on Kewell to stay fit. I like the look of Babel; he looked lively in both the 20 odd mins vs Chelsea and Villa, made a couple of good runs, got some decent shots away and also a lovely cross on sunday.

I disagree with you about Aurelio and Arbeloa though; I hated Aurelio early last year but he got a run in the side and was excellent and has a lovely cross on him. As for Arbeloa, in the 3 biggest games (sunday and the 2 Barca games) he's played since he's joined he's been excellent, he's made a dodgy pass or 2 but i like him; he's got pace which we lack at the back, gets forward and supports the wingers and he's also a decent defender.

I don't think we're going to sign another winger but i would like us to.

hm, arb does look a bit more promising now, i guess iv just got to give him time.
Yea, that ****** me right off when pennant nobbed that cutback up, i couldnt understand how he did that, but then went on to deliver some brilliant crosses, him and torres had me in stitches giving ashley cole a mare though, they ran at the defense v well, often completely confusing them.
I think leiva will be our attacker to watch out for in midfield now, he is an attacking midfielder isnt he? Stevies already give him a good review too.

I like how rafa is rotating and subbing, hes shifting the forwards off to the wings if they are capable of it and letting them play in and out of each other, swapping about and generally taking turns. It kind of makes the last 20mins of each match a bit more lively, torres shifting to right winging, bumping babel to his prefered left etc. I think thats how the goals will wind up being spread.
I want to see more Agger goals, and carragher to be honest :D Aggers are classier though

Rafa said Leiva's a holding midfielder (similar to Xabi) but can also play box to box, not sure we're going to see much of him nor many goals from him this season.

The only decent cross/pass i can think of that Pennat made was the one to Riise early on where he messed his control up, other than that he played like he has since he's joined: gave the full-back a torrid time then messed up every time with his crossing. If he could cross he'd be a top winger as with the ball at his feet and running at defenders he's really good.

Like i said the only midfielder we can rely on for goals is Gerrard and have to hope that Babel keeps up his adaptation as he'll score a fair few if he does and like wise Kewell if he stays fit.

bugger, i thought leiva was an attacker. Oh well. he did make a few decent crosses, but they were defended well etc, which is going to happen to a lot of them, since no1 usually stands waiting in the box waiting for them since they know theyll go nowhere near :D
I think our hopes are on the new boys really ...

Leto is an attacking player and at the age of 20 rafa must have seen something more than potential in him, we've yet to see much of him but he did play decent in the Rotterdam tournament. I would rather see what he can do on the left wing rather than just stick Riise there.

Perhaps a couple of seasons ago - He is certainly not World Class now.

Did you see him in the Copa America? He's as good as he's ever been.

Yes, but the Copa America really isn't a benchmark of quality, as it's not even taken seriously by the majority of the teams competing in it.

Riquelme is a good player, definitely not World Class, and definitely lacking a good yard of pace at least to make him one.

Pace? When did centre midfielders ever need pace? He can dictate a game single handedly against any team in the world, and he even made Forlan look like a good player the amount of chances he created for him.
