"Microsoft Gears Up to Release Xbox 360 with New Chips.

Microsoft Corp. reportedly plans to release a new version its Xbox 360 video game system code-named Jasper in August and has already assigned IBM and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to make chips for the new game console. However, there are other important rumours: TSMC got orders to produce the chip for code-named Valhalla Xbox 360 design, which is rumoured to combine microprocessor and graphics chip in a single piece of silicon.

The code-named Jasper design of the Xbox 360 game console will use ATI Xenos graphics and memory controller hub (GMCH) made using 65nm process at TSMC as well as IBM Xenon central processing unit (CPU) produced at IBM’s 65nm nodes. The new system design is projected to consume less electricity, use less complex cooling systems and also produce less noise.

By contrast, current Xbox 360 design named Falcon utilizes GMCH and eDRAM cores manufactured using 90nm process technology at TSMC as well as CPU built at IBM using 65nm fabrication process. The first-generation Xbox 360 used 90nm chips.

TSMC is chosen to make the 65nm GMCH chips, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) is contracted to package and test the chips, and Nanya has won orders to supply flip-chip packaging substrates, reports China Economic News Service.

What is, perhaps, more important than the facts that TSMC again got orders to produce ATI Xenos GMCH and IBM land orders on IBM Xenon CPU at expense of Chartered Semiconductor (which once promised to start making 45nm chips for Advanced Micro Devices in 2009), is that “chips” for next-generation Xbox 360 code-named Valhalla will also be made at TSMC. Earlier rumours transpired that Valhalla features a chip that combines CPU and GMCH. In order to build such chip at TSMC, Microsoft either needs to disclose certain design rules of IBM’s fabrication process to the Taiwan-based semiconductor manufacturer, or completely rework the CPU according to fabrication process of TSMC.

Microsoft did not comment on the news-story."

I knew Jasper was in the pipeline but I really didn't expect to see it until next year tbh, just goes to show at least they are trying to rectify some of the issues that the old 360's have been suffering from, mainly the noise, also the fact that it's running allot cooler hopefully means the reliability will be allot better also.

so less noise means no dvd drive then?, lol

complex cooling system? - what they mean?, it never had a complex cooling sytem in the 1st place?..........

lol talk about milking the cow :p cant bill gates come up with something better than a new paint job and quieter cd drive ? lol

Yeah i was thinking he could include a DVD drive so the games would come on media with more physical storage space. You reckon that would work?

EVERY console has it. If anything Microsoft are more silent about it than the others, after all, you have your PSone, slimline PS2, PSP slim etc...

No, what they mean is you guys have to crank the damn volume up a bit. FFS we aint all blessed with Superman type hearing and women type moaning. Think about the average man wont you! ;)
I have to have my telly so loud just to hear my games over my 360 it keeps my neighbours up.

I've had to resort to sticking my MP3 player earphones in my TV until I get some decent headphones!

It's not even that. This Jasper revision is identical in form to other 360's, just with a cheaper to produce chip in it.

Thank god I dont live in a straw house. If the big bad wolf comes, you're done for.

There's nothing wrong with my house.

I wish people like you would just accept 360s (maybe not all of them) are very loud instead of making up excuses and blaming it on everything else. "Super-hearing", house, console itself being "faulty". Give it up.

I'm the kind of person who fits mostly passive cooling in the PCs I build, to me the 360 is disgustingly loud and I would've definitely checked out the PS3 instead if I didn't want the exclusives out/due on the Xbox 360.

I've never 'got' this noise-thing with the 360. Yes, if I fire it up on it's own I can hear it.. but once the game/video/music loads I can't hear the console.

Why didn't you put a new heatsink on the 360 with a 120mm fan then?
Because I'd rather have my warranty, especially with a console that blows up so much.

Trust me it's one of the things I intend to do when it's run out.

Like I said, my problem is mainly at night as I have to have the TV so loud it keeps the neighbours up, so I have to resort to earphones/headphones (and I don't have a good pair at the moment).

During the day I can have the TV up as loud as I want to mask the noise, so it's not a problem then.

If the Jasper model is much quieter, I will sell my Elite and buy one of the new respins.

I was just asking, not having a go or anything :)

They are louder than PS3's but not to the extent people claim. Keeping your neighbours up is just utter Bull****. And if you disagree you are wrong as I am the foremost authority on the issue.

No, it's not utter bull****. Why would I make up lies about a console I spent £300 on and enjoy? If I hated the thing I would've sold it a long time ago, the noise is pretty much my only issue with it.

The fact is that my 360 is very loud, once there's a disc in the noise is utterly unbearable. All the 360s I've personally heard (around a dozen, not counting shop models I might add) are just as loud and I have to turn my television up very loud just to hear my games over it and at night this is not an option.

I should note I have not heard a Falcon model yet.

And if you disagree you are wrong as I am the foremost authority on the issue.
May I ask how old you are? You sound like a right kid.
