New version of Xbox 360 coming in August with less heat and noise

If this will be a cheaper production process, and more efficient, will we see a further price drop for the xmas run (3 yr anniversary too)? At a guess yes.

Paving the way for the 2010/11 Xbox4 as well. Getting the production techniques up to speed.

the only noise my 360 Elite makes is when there is a game inserted in the DVD drive, and as for cooling, it runs pretty cool, touch wood.

Releasing an update so users can change the Drive speed is what i think Microsoft should be releasing.

They obviously dont care about the noise as they are trying to concentrate on these new Jasper models. But i tihnk an update with this feature would make quite a lot of people happy.

The whole noise issue should've been a prime concern for M$ at the start of the 360's design process. These consoles are supposed to sleek, modern pieces of home entertainment equipment.

My (14 month old) 360 was making a serious racket while playing GTA a couple of nights back. The poor thing sounded like it was really labouring, but still I pushed it for more...

I'm pretty sure he meant that to drown out the 360 he had to turn the TV volume up to the point where it annoyed the neighbours....hence the headphones comment:)
Aye. When I am watching TV the volume is usually 12-14, I tend to have to set the volume 22 when playing my 360 which is considerably louder as you can probably imagine.

I'm the kind of person who fits mostly passive cooling in the PCs I build, to me the 360 is disgustingly loud and I would've definitely checked out the PS3 instead if I didn't want the exclusives out/due on the Xbox 360.

Whilst I agree with you on principle, I've got to say that surely keeping you neighbors up is an exaggeration?

Everything I build uses passive cooling or the quitest fans that I can get hold of and my Media Centre and PC are silent (bar the raptor in my PC).

Out of all the consoles and PC's I have the 360 is easily the loudest, but keeping up the neighbors?

Out of curiosity, is your 360 from the first batch that got released?

Mine is around 2 years old now I'd say. I mean I can't say from mine and my friends 360's I've ever heard one that was that loud. Have you considered this is a serious fault and tried replacing it?

edit:

realised you meant the TV volume, but again... my point about the 360 being so loud you need to turn the tv volume up still stands that it could be a fault with the 360.

Perhaps you just have tetchy neighbours then :p

I game with a sub and 2 speakers on at 3am sometimes and can't say I've had a complaint before (I live in a building where there are flats below me and either side of me.)

:)

Surely attempting to reduce the nm of the chip and changing the cooling systems is MS trying to reduce the noise levels??

Theoretically a smaller nm means the chips will run cooler, won't need as powerful fans... so the fans should run at lower RPM and be quiter.

The text in the OP also directly says they will produce less noise, so you never know they may aim at giving every 360 a quiet optical drive :)

Nah, it's not. I have no reason to exaggerate about something I spent £300 on and really do enjoy in every other regards apart from the noise it makes. Mine just really is that loud and I've heard quite a few just as loud as mine is.

Like I clarified in the post I made a few minutes ago, it's not the console noise that keeps the neighbours up but the volume I have to have the television on if I want to drown out the noise from the 360. I have to have the television on about 22 just to hear the speech in GTA4 for example.

I don't remember the exact time I bought it and don't have the receipt, but I think I got it in around October last year. It's an Elite but it's not a Falcon iteration, not sure what batch that makes it.

I've never really considered it a fault because my friends Xbox 360s are about as loud as mine, one is even louder but it's a second-hand Premium from the first batch and his DVD drive is also faulty (often doesn't eject or read a disc).

Could well have. :(

Then your neighbours are way more forgiving than mine. :p

Or your sound setup is much better at distributing sound than my television is.

Its people like you that microsoft love! Buying multiple versions of the same console, lining their pockets - no incentive for them to get it right first time round :(
Don't blame me, blame the noise my 360 makes. I'm not going to keep it if a quiet one comes along.

I would've returned it if I thought the noise that comes out of mine was some kind of fault.

I must admit I play games with a lot more volume than I used to at night since owning a 360. Some games I just wouldn't hear with the dvd noise at my old levels.

I'm lucky being detached that I dont have any neighbours to **** off. If I was still in my mid terrace my neighbour would have been round ever half hour.

I play guitar hero on level 12 on the Z5500's no longer worry about the noise from the dvd drive :D

Surely you knew its going to be loud when you bought it?

I just think its stupid buying two of the same console if you dont need to
