Newcastle new sponsers?

I've read a few pieces on Newcastle's Wonga deal and there seems to be a small outcry regarding the morality of the deal. Do any football fans really care about who sponsors their club (excluding ridiculous sounding names/looking logos)?

edit: Actually, didn't Sunderland fans boycott Sugar Puffs because Kevin Keegan signed sponsorship deal with them?

Not quite. Due to the political situation in Iran, the US have put ristrictions on transactions in and out of Iran. Standard Chartered were accused of hiding the fact that certain transactions were going in and out of Iran.

I do.

I don't like the idea of being sponsered by a drug company, alcohol, betting or what not company. I wouldn't want to be sponsered by Wonga either.

Bring back the lolly sponser!

Ah, we got our apology for that yet ;D?

I've never really gave it a great deal of thought before. There's a lot of different football related sponsors that you could question the morality of (as Purdy mentions, SC with Liverpool, Barclays with the EPL, various betting/alcohol sponsors et) but this Newcastle deal seems a little closer to home than the others.

It's reported that the North East has the highest rate of insolvency in the country and suggested that Wonga and their extortionate interest rates have targetted Newcastle specifically because of this.

Wonga has chosen to target a region that has comparatively high numbers of people experiencing financial difficulty. Our experience tells us that many of those seeking high cost credit need professional advice for their financial problems, rather than accruing further debt.

I agree that there is much more to it, I really don't like the idea of betting / alcohol / banks ect ect being advertised in the stadium.

I don't mind sporting brands like Nike / Addy nor do I mind games being advertised.

I think it is a bit of a nanny state when we start worrying about the appropriateness of sponsors, if people are going to be swayed into borrowing loads of money, gambling away income and then spending the kids dinner money on beer, there probably isn't much hope for them anyway.

That said, it seems tobacco advertising has been largely forced out of sport, so who knows.

If Wonga have deliberately targetted the North East and have a good foundation for that decision, good luck to them I say, surely that is just good business sense rather than sponsoring Chelsea or whatever.
I find it more comical that Jobsite sponsor Portsmouth considering they made a bunch of people redundant :)

The shame of it, I had a fair jibe at some Hull fan at work over the cash converters sponsorship.

As my missus says, Toon can't help but set themselves up for yet another joke, at our expense

The question isn't whether it's good business sense by Wonga but whether Newcastle should (be allowed to) promote this type of organisation (they've been heavily criticised long before the Newcastle deal).

IIRC Wonga were having to defend themselves on BBC Watchdog a while back, it was to do with lax fraud checks and extortionate interest rates.

Told my best mate that they were renaming it the Wonga Arena and he almost flipped. :D
He is happy that it's going back to St James :p
