next gen consoles

Anyone who seriously thinks the PS4 Neo will play games at 4k needs their head examined.

It'll have HDMI 2.0 and UHD Blu-ray support, and the GPU will be faster than a standard PS4, but it'll just mean PlayStation VR will have enough power to run at a decent whip. They will be targeting 1080p/60hz as currently the PS4 tends to be locked 30fps.

Pretty much. Even at twice the power it will only go from 30 to 60fps. 4k not a chance in hell of even 30fps. If the 1080 can't do it a ps4 certainly won't. Optimized or not.

It'll be a new release for VR which they need to get on ASAP, and for 4K/UHD bluray playback so they can cover that part of the market.
Whilst doing it they're just upgrading the grunt of the consoles to output/upscale games to 4K/UHD so they can stick a "4K Ready" sticker on the box and sell like hot cakes to the gullible.

Will it render out at 4K 30FPS? Unlikely, but possible for indie games and such like. Though then again, consider that console games don't have the level of detail as that of the PC versions. So it's a comparison of apples v oranges anyway.

Price will probably be around the original PS4 release price. So not cheap.

As a final comment; consoles will never hit the level PC in terms of quality and performance as they are bound by restrictions on price, size and power.

totally wrong !

consoles or one box under the tv is where everything will end. you look at the ultimate selling tool as its about money at end of the day.

what do most want ? one box under the tv that does everything with as little effort to do so. what you name it , call it, is irrelevant. but that is the end objective.

saying consoles wont be as powerful they will be and they basically are pcs now.have been for many years.

as the components get more refined, smaller, less power usage. it will lead to having the ideal dream of a small object that does it all with little power used.that is the end goal.limiting your thinking to " pc " or " "console " or whatever is small thinking.

I disagree, but respect your opinion.

no way lol has no one seen the new integrated motherboards with 1070gtx in them ;)

remember they could also put in a 1080gtx if they wanted. the price of doing so is irrelevant as they lose on making the consoles anyway . they always have. they make the money on the games themselves. also a long production.

my guess is they will go with the 1070 gtx configuration

Nvidia burnt their bridges with MS and Sony on the consoles. Plus Nvidia can't do a full x86 soc; so you'll won't see Nvidia in the consoles I'd say ever again.

They will want to keep baseline - as its already been announced its AMD soc again in it.....

I cannot believe that some peeps think the new updated consoles will run 4k games ...not a chance

as its been said 4 k content for these means video playback possibly less demanding games ect not your full on eye candy stuff not a chance...

Now it seems the hype train advertising is not helping hear as its sneaky of sony & MS to state 4k machine but need to be more specific re its content as peeps are being driven to think its full 4k games everything ect

the damn xbox cannot do 1080 right never mind anywhere near 4k

what is going on

I'm sorry to say, but consoles are for people who don't know any better or don't want to. All that muck about 'but you should buy them for the exclusives!' doesn't wash either, because if Playstation didn't exist, you can bet your ass Uncharted would be on PC anyway. Exclusives exist because consoles exist.

That's a bit of a logical fallacy really; if consoles didn't exist neither would Uncharted. Exclusives are a perfectly valid reason to own a console; if you don't own one you'll never get to play them, regardless of whatever alternate reality you conjure up.

I threw together a PC for my missus for less than £900 (same cost as a Ps4 on release + Ps4.5 on release)

£350 for a PS4 on launch, no word on pricing for the Neo so far but it's fair to assume it won't be £550.

alright microsoft just announced the Xbox Scorpio for 2017, with 6Teraflops of compute, 4k gaming, retro-compatible with Xbone, talked about easy cross developement between the platforms...
anyhow i hope some site reports more details about specs.

Sounds about R9 390/390X level GPU performance plus a bit for the CPU.

HANG ON!! The Xbox One Scorpio just smashed all PC's in to the dust with it's "TRUE 4K GAMING" claim... "the best frame rate, no compromises". 6 Terraflops! OMG! WOW! STOP THE PRESS! The PC is finished. Nice knowing you OCUK, but you're done. ALL HAIL SCORPIO, PC IS DEAD!

Lol Legend. But honestly if consoles manage to close the gap it's only better for PC gamers and hopefully will minimise all these downgrade issues. These 'new' consoles won't do it, but hey it's a step in the right direction.

I have to admit these upgraded consoles have gotten me a little more interested in consoles again, hopefully their performance claims are true.

I just don't understand how a console can claim 60FPS @ 4K when a 1080 can't even do that... not all the time on all games anyway.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic... Scorpio is VOODOO! BURN IT!!! DIE SCORPIO, DIIIEEEEE!!

Consoles don't catch up to pcs. They just don't.

Not everyone wants one box to do it all as that one box you speak of would be a compromise (not even including the fact that keyboard and mouse is so much better for certain games). Why do you think pc gaming still exists?

The only thing that would kill PC gaming is if there wasn't money to be made and clearly there is.

lol only in forums like these do you find the daft claims for 4k gaming AAA titles. As has been covered the tech. announced isn't going to do it and the fact the that Sony have very careful in their wording.

I don't know, the way MS have just announced Scorpio doesn't seem to leave much wiggle room if it's not able to play games in TRUE 4K @ 60FPS. Console fanboys all over the web are going nuts with excitement about this... doesn't seem like it's going to end well though!

Instead of responding with pseudo-mocking, insecure comment like this, realize that a smaller Vega-based chip in late 2017 could *easily* achieve exactly what they're claiming for a very reasonable price(as consoles are subsidized).

Of course it's not going to smash all PC's in the dust, but it'll put it right alongside many reasonably powerful PC's, at least in GPU power.

So just slightly over 390x compute so can imagine it will be faster than 390x - 980 slightly. So rumors that it was a 480 gpu could have been about right.
With optimisation and reduced settings I can see games doing 4k most will be upscaled but should be around 30fps.
Not bad.

Lol, you think Xbox will be using VEGA?? Err, no. VEGA will be more than 6Tflps for a start, nevermind the cost implications of putting that in a console and what the end user would be asked to cough up for it. A 1080 in a £2000 PC can't even do what they're claiming the Xbox will do, so something smells, no, STINKS about their claims. This is going to unravel somehow, I know it.
