Next Gen Direct X 10 Cards

Dont buy one straight away, nothing is going to use it apart from Vista, and 1x single game, £500+ for that is a waste, by the time there is more things out actually using it, that its worth buying a DX10 card for, the R600/G80 that are coming first will be very old gen, cards come every few months, games and stuff take years, so as i said by the time we have a DX10 market, R600/G80 are gona be very old.

If you buy one when they appear, then when all the stuff starts to appear your gona be sitting there saying damn, i need to upgrade my card again as its struggling with all this stuff, it runs Vista and the Crysis game fine, but everything else runs like a dog, what a waste of £500+. :(

Thanks for sticking to the original question! lol

Yeah original question about DX10 cards was answered, Xmas, so i gave my thoughts, on the other question though, the x1800 XT is faster than the 7900 GT, can use AA+HDR at the same time as well unlike the 7900's, only disadvantages is, its hotter, needs more power, and is a 2x slot cooler, where as the 7900 GT is cooler, quieter, and uses less power. :)

I never answered that question as you said you were not gona bother if the DX10 cards were out soon, so i thought you were gona wait for em then, and waste £500+ on an operating system and 1x game. :D

software, is running years behind Hardware, is DX9 used to its full potential now? only recent games with more to come are doing this .Mr Gates knows if DX10 was out as a patch and sold seperate from Vista for XP hardly anyone would buy Vista. It'll be late 07 at the earliest before big titles aside from the MS title Halo 2 use DX10, might be better to buy a card then, 1 and a half years is a long time in terms of the latest modelgraphics card.

DX10 cards under XP will work fine but obviously DX9 and below games will only work.

DX9 games under Vista will also work fine, anything less than DX9 will not work period no hacks, no workaround.

Make no mistake XP will be around a lot longer than people think especially in the corporate enviroment, a lot of my old games are DX8 or below.

steam should work allthough half-life (and associated expansion packs, games using the quake 2 engine etc...) wont, DX8 isnt it?
Vista will still have DirectX 9.0L (I think) compliance aside from DirectX 10 compatibility, which will make it backwards compatible with games built on previous DirectX versions (all of them, as far as I am aware), so we won't need to worry about that. :)

I'm more worried that people who choose not to upgrade to Vista won't be able to play with DirectX 10 at all, they'll be stuck with DirectX 9.0c and below, but I guess that's down to the new kernels and stuff that have been written specifically for Vista. :(

Thanks. My good old X850XT can handle most games i play at 1280x1024. Its also an issue of do i sell this card now on a certain trading site for around £100 (if i get that) and upgrade for around £70. Hmm, thats sounding tempting. Especially with the X1800XT for £170 new. Cooling and power are not really issues as have a 530w Tagan and watercooling loop for CPU/GFX.

Anybody want an 8 month old X850XT :D :p

I'm more worried about the supposed performance hit from using 9.0L... Oblivion is 9.0C and I can't imagine it being much slower

Id go for the x1800 then, £170 is a cracking price for a top card, got a 512mb one here, throws everything around i put to it, i use 1280x1024 to as having a TFT. :)

You can get a XFX 7900GT new for £200 inc VAT and delivery, thats a nice option too :)

Ii'm in a similar situation in that DX10 has thrown up a few problems with my upgrade. I'm doing the big upgrade this summer (AGP to PCI-E) and so will be upgrading my card just before DX10. I'm torn between grabbing a cheap x800 series card or getting a x1800 series, both in the knowledge that i'll be wanting to upgrade to a DX10 card soon after their release. Will the x1800 have dropped to the £100-£150 price band by summer? That would really help my decision! (especially since i have the stuggle between AM2 X2 and conroe CPUs to overcome)

No contest there if the preliminary benches are anything to go by - Conroe all the way.

I did exactly that last week... Sold my old X850XT on Ebay for £120 and bought an X1800XT for £170:D Bargain! Well worth it for as its given me a huge boost in games:)

admittedly, but i'm slightly sceptical about those preliminary benchmarks, but thats a discussion for another thread.
I've just read about a x1900gt breifly on ATIs site, any idea how that will tie in to curent cards in regards to performance and cost? Seems like a x1800 replacement at first glance

Iam prety sure microsoft said anything less than DX9 wont work, the current DX9 under XP does have backwards capability but only because it has all the previous versions of DX bundled with it. DX9L will only have DX9 nothing more, I maybe wrong though also remember all of the legacy stuff is gone from XP.

Oh right, I thought that DirectX 9.0L would be the same, a bundle with DirectX 9.0c and all previous versions in.

Would suck if it was just DirectX 9.0c and nothing else.
