Next Gen iPhone Metal Backs Leaked

I'd imagine iOS 6 for the iPhones and iPods will only be available for the ones with retina screens. Where devs used to have to have apps for non-retina and retina, they'll now have to do 'new iPhone' and iPhone 4/4S. The assets like icons etc won't have to be changed, it'll just be a layout/space thing. Can't see it being a big deal.

This is probably why they're just lengthening the device rather than making a bigger screen with new resolution - it's less work to 'add a row' and fill extra space than totally rejig everything for a new screen/res size. /speculating

All you're thinking about there is icon resolution. When entire applications are designed around one aspect ratio, it's not exactly ideal having to port them over to another totally different aspect ratio for one device. It's really unlike Apple to do something like this, so I'd be surprised if it was 100% accurate.

Perhaps, but there are plenty of apps that run on both iPhone/iPod and iPad too. They're different resolutions and different aspect ratios. If a dev doesn't bother to update then, like running an iPhone app on the iPad that has no support for it, the app will be centred on the screen with black borders, so if this iPhone part is real, they'll be letterboxing at the top and bottom only, as the width won't be any different. A waste of space, but it'll still run fine until it's updated.

Before they opted for that I just wish that they would go back on their 326 ppi and stetch it out to 4.1" or whatever it is. It will look absolutely fine.

I prefer it myself, it's a shame they don't incorporate an optical out in the headphone jack for those of with a DAC

That's what the dock connector is for - there are several desktop devices which bypass the internal DAC of iOS devices (e.g. the iStreamer) and there are 3 companies making portable DAC (two w/built in headphone amps) - Cypher Labs, Fostex and VentureCraft. Obviously it would be easier just to have a non-encrypted digital out, but that's part of the Apple thing. The Macs obviously have the optical out in the headphone jack but it's not a very clean output and at this point I'd still rather use a USB to s/pdif converter going into my DAC.

So going to be the real thing.

I must admit in the video it has more style to it but I still don't think it'll result as being the iPhone 5. It just doesn't have Apples look to it. I would love to see the white one because that truly does look gash in the photos. Once we see that in video it'll be proven without a doubt if its real or not. Even though I am convinced thats not it.

The lighting looked weird on the pictures of the white one. The metal back looked sort of yellowy/gold. Probably the bright lighting - in other pics it looked like the classic aluminium colour the Macs have.

Anyway, these physical part leaks happen well in advance of release every year so it's probably real. Compared to the classic iPhone form factor, due to the taller screen and yet only a little more overall height, I'd wager one will still be able to operate it with the thumb of the holding hand, keeping it in line with the Jobs rant about big screens and single hand operation. On my 4S I can reach the top of the phone (not the screen) with my thumb, and I don't have big hands, so hypothetically I'd still be able to reach the top of the taller screen.

Would still want the black too!

Apple are getting pushed to use USB mini connectors by US standards. They want to do away with people having there own connector and all phones and mobile devices using one connector. So maybe apple have given in?

They've already released a dock-to-microUSB adapter, it's on the Apple Store. Job done, as far as they're concerned. Smaller dock = more space available = moving the headphone jack to the iPod position and freeing up space up top for other goodies.

Another 'leak' and more bs reports like every year, which rarely actually turn out to be true, sources being as vague as 'a person close to the matter'

My uncle's best friend's auntie who has a third cousin from China who works at Foxconn told me, so it real.

The shape and size was going to be radically different to the 4 when the so called 5 was due out, which turned out it to be the 4S. The new iPad was allegedly going to have x y and z. It didn't.

The winner is page hits on rumour sites. Wait and see, either way I'll end up getting one anyway :p
