*** Nexus 5 THE Official Thread ***

If having to flash a tiny patch to get HDR working is the sole reason for not putting custom ROM's on the Nexus, then you're completely missing out.

What is decent at the moment in the custom roms, what's the "must have"? I stopped checking on XDA a month or so ago as nothing was taking my fancy.

Missing my point :p You ALWAYS encounter problems when messing with custom ROMs etc. and personally I cba with the faff, having to read through threads etc. to find out the problem/fix, then flash files hoping that it will fix the issue and that another problem doesn't come along and what makes it even worse, is if you are out for the day, so no access to a PC to get the files and do whatever is required.

Even a few here, iirc fallen god have said they stopped messing with custom ROM's as there were always niggles with them so have just stuck with stock and a custom kernel.

Only thing that would appeal to me about rooting/custom rom stuff is adblocker and having a bit more customisation i.e. reducing the size of on screen buttons. Performance is perfectly good as it is.

^^ Totally ye with you there Nexus.
The N5 runs well enough as it is. All I've done is rooted it so I can run Adblocker and reduced the nav keys to a smaller DPI and flashed Franco kernel. Other than that it's all stock and runs like a dream.

Congratulations are in order for buying the N5. I take it that your beloved HOS has finally been retired?

I was in two minds whether to simply stay with stock, a custom kernel (which allows gamma and colour control to improve the display) along with the Exposed Framework and Gravity Box and finally a change of the DPI.

So I nandroid the Stock ROM and then gave the weekly of SlimKat a try. It seems "light" but feature rich and with the "darker"version being selected I like the inverted GAPPS. it runs really well without any issues found so far. I have kept with Faux's kernel for the colour and the display control app to use a colour profile.

It gives me the impression of being both smoother than stock and more responsive. It seems to meet my needs and is also well supported over at XDA.

I take your point Nexus, in regards to custom ROMs, as I have had a few headaches in the past but at the very least I would need to change the DPI as I find everything a little too large with the stock N5. I too thought that the phone was pretty responsive on stock, and maybe there might not be much in it, but it seems more responsive since I did the above.

Either way with the excellent Nexus toolkit and TWRP stock is only a few clicks away if needed.

I am not sure if I would have ended up with an N5 if I didn't want to change something on the phone, and do it relatively easily.

Yup and then we have the choice of using ART instead too which supposedly gives a nice boost for speed/smoothness and battery life. Not touching that though as some apps don't work with it.

Thanks :)

And yup, no longer using it! Still a great wee phone imo.

You ALWAYS encounter problems when messing with custom ROMs etc.

I completely disagree. Some ROMs may give you issues but many ROMs are fine (perhaps having a Nexus device helps). I've been running Cataclysm ROM since it was released and have encountered zero problems. Not had a reboot, there's been no apps crashing that I remember and it's just as fast but with all the extra toggles and shortcuts you'd expect from a custom ROM. It's just as solid and stable as the stock ROM I had been running up until that point.

This, only reason main reasons I have a custom kernel is for sound boosting, I still find the Nexus 5 a tad quiet for tube rides, outside of that I don't care. Only reason I root is to custom the UI elements a bit, things like the notification settings are a UI nightmare, some are click to toggle and hold to launch settings, some are the other way around. And it is missing a lot. I also include more options in the power menu, change the battery icon to text, reduce the nav buttons a bit, and finally titanium backup.

Thats about it. I use to love flashing X/Y/Z rom, I wouldn't stick with one for more then 2-3 weeks but now I'm just to busy for that. I just need my phone to work, and for the most part Android has fixed most of the things I used to change, for everything else I have xposed framework.

I see the appeal to trying different roms but I just don't think its worth it anymore, rather my phone was rock solid and stable. Even if it is stable its just another thing I have to flash and keep up to date.

Minimal usage (just camera, browsing, few phone calls), could probably have got another 20 min on screen time:

Few more photos, this phone copes very well with dark and bright scenes i.e. the cat one, with the one s, the background and well lit areas would have been a blinding white and the cat/shadowed area would have been a lot brighter/exposed. Also handles "bright" colours well too, no problems capturing that pink and yellow, on the 1s, it would have had a more "glow" effect, I would have had to mess around with the saturation, touch to focus stuff and/or sometimes edit the photo in lightroom after to get rid of the "glow".

In the past I've been a big fan of SlimBean /SlimICS, they've always been the ROMS I've ended up with. I'm just liking my mobile banking more than anything I've seen as yet.

Sounds like bad news.

Allowing customisaton means we will get phones full of Network branded bloatware, and selling through Operators will mean we loose the uber cheap SIM only option and are forced into only getting them on 24 month contracts, or paying what carriers decide for SIM free version (which will be in line with other top line phones, i.e LOTS!)

:(

The best thing about Nexus is that the Operators don't get their grubby mits on it. Letting them join the party will spoil it for everyone :(

yeah but if we can get them from the google store that will be cool

Lol, do you use your phone normally? Like do you use Twitter/Facebook/other apps? I can honestly say I've never got two days usage out of a charge before....

Installing Xposed with Gravity Box gives virtually all the upsides of a custom ROM but with none of the negatives as everything can be reverted and returned to un-tinkered state in seconds. Everything i can think of on a rooted stock can be customized on the fly without any sort of flashing or anything, i'd never bother with customs ROM's after trying out Xposed.
