Nexus 9

I see that the Sony Z3 compact tablet is up for preorder for £300 with an offer on a free case. I'm a massive Z3 fan after buying the Z3c phone. The tablet will have the same battery efficiency, which should translate to the same incredible run times. Micro SD card slot, water proofing and PS4 remote play make it extremely tempting. While it's not on the same level CPU spec wise as the N9; it has me turning my head.

I expect if this wasn't a Nexus device, it would have been completely dismissed by everyone on here.

Stock Android at the front of the release schedule is a major selling point.

Was comparing the value. Shield is a good option.
Who wants to pay over £300 for a device with 16gb and no SD..

Personally I'd say it was a worthwhile comparison to make, even if the shield isn't quite as good it does seem like much better value.

Stock Android is great and everything, but I'm not sure its something we should have to pay a premium for...

Lack of MicroSD is a no go for me, like someone said earlier I like to load mine up with movies, games and music etc. for holidays.

Already have an iPad Air for home use and a Tegra Note 7 for taking out and about, I was originally going to get the Sheild Tablet to replace the Note till all the reports of cracking came in.

I'm going to hold out for Sheild Tablet 2 which should have the same chipset as Nexus 9 but all the benefits of the Sheild:)

No SD was, as many have said, expected.

32GB being the largest capacity however, was not.

You'd think they would have learnt from the N7.

I was waiting for this to replace my nexus 10 but I'm so disappointed that 32gb is the largest capacity.

im not so sure people really expected it to have an sd card slot, i think everyone was just hoping like hell it would.

the 32gb was a bit of a surprise though. that makes no sense to me at all.

Erm...aren't they both K1's?

Indeed, what makes K1 special is the 3D performance and they both use the same GPU.

CPU performance in most cases isn't a limiting factor on Android, well not yet anyway.

There is also the display resolution of the Nexus 9 to take into account, 3D performance will probably be a bit slower as a result.

No sd slot,

No buy.

I can't fathom what Google are thinking with regards this. I can't stream a movie from the Play store on a plane, in a car, or even most hotels and campsites. The only place I can depend on streaming my stuff is my house which has literally dozens of bits of equipment that can steam stuff.

Which 9"+ tablet around the same price with similar specs offers better value?

The shield is 8" and has worse specs. It's like everybody just ignores that this isn't a 7" tablet but a 9". The price is competitive, it's not spectacular but this is the best spec'd tablet on the market. It is in no way overpriced.

You could always use a USB OTG cable for extra storage for movies etc. I have done this before with my Nexus 10 with no issues at all.

I've got a Nexus 7 and that is a pain in the ass + you can't charge and use the tablet at the same time.

I can literally fill 32gb 4 times over.

Z3 Tablet Compact I will buy next. The remote play stuff is a big selling point for me as well.

For the same price as a WiFi only 32GB Nexus 9 (£400) you can get:

A 64GB iPad Mini 3
A 16GB nVidia Sheild with an SD slot and £160 change
A 32GB and LTE nVidia Sheild with an SD slot and £100 change
A 16GB Sony Z3 Tablet with an SD slot and £70 change
Thee Hudl 2 8GBs with an SD slot, and change for a case of beer

Depending on what you consider important, and what you consider value, there are loads of options. The original N7 was in a class of 1. Everyone who wanted a sub 10" tablet had one choice, the N7. The N9 however is aimed squarely at the iPad Mini market alone, and even as an avid hater of iPads, I struggle to see why you wouldn't buy the Apple device.

Edit: Lol! I just noticed the price of the LTE 32GB version of the N9 is £460! I'm sorry, but I cannot believe anyone can justify that being £160, or 54% better than the LTE 32GB nVidia Shield!

Edit 2: Oh crikey, I just noticed its actually hitting the bottom price points of the iPad Air 2! Apples 10" tablet flagship is almost the same price as Googles 9" Nexus... Who'd have thought that would be the case a year ago?

Other than having to have an OTG cable and USB stick dangling of your tablet all the time...

Every single device listed has at least an inch smaller screen and much much worse specs. Try harder.

The Nexus 9 is closer in size to the Nexus 10 then the Nexus 7. Stop comparing it to smaller devices...

It's a competitor to the Air 2 and has better specs... it is not comparable to the fricking Mini which has two year old specs.

So what am I allowed to compare it too? 8.9" devices only?

My point is there are options, lots of options. You can go for a smaller screen, or bigger, or larger capacity, or smaller and SD cards, or high spec, or low spec and spend 30% the price. Previously you didn't have to bother with all that. The Nexus device would be the best value regardless. Thats no longer the case.

Having written that spec I am now seriously considering the 16GB Shield, especially after reading on nVidias site that they are prepping Lollypop for it.
