Nexus Prime

yeah i'm gonna hold fire and we will all know for sure tomorrow, surprised if true that the 5mp camera and 1.2 cpu. i know its not all about mega pixels, or the clock speed, but to 90% of people it is and that's what sells. strange if true, but if i worked at google i would kinda be saying "hang on samsung, that spec appears below your current flagship phone"

and the American SGS2 has a 1.5cpu?

This is why 4.5" is stupid. It is where your thumb can reach with 1 hand.
fourinches.jpg

Well that's wrong as with my small hands I can comfortable reach all areas on a 4" screen. In terms of width the phone could be 1/2 inch and I'd still reach.

I think the calculations are missing the fact we have opposable thumbs and so you can't just draw a locus with length of thumb.

If the specs are true then I'm even more excited to compare it against my S2 and then once ICS comes out for the S2 compare side by side again :p

I imagine ICS will run even faster on the S2 though due to the better GPU and lower resolution.

5MP :/ While I doubt they are honestly waiting for the SGS3 (seriously, it's ~8 months away) this feels like they are protecting their own products to a large if you know what I mean :)

I think that these calculations are based on the phone being in a fixed position in your hand. I have average hands and if I don't hold the phone in a weird way and contort my hand, I can't get any more range than 3.7".

So then, should I replace my iPhone 4 with one of these? Or go for a galaxy s2? Or go onto a rolling contract and wait for a proper new iPhone? Decisions decisions.

I'll still probably get the SGN even if these specs are true as I can't be doing with the resolution on the SGS2 for another year.

Wait for the official announcement first.

If it was me though looking from those specs I'd still go with the s2. It will have ICS eventually anyway. But the screen resolution on the prime is awesome.

Heh! I guess you should wait and see what ICS brings to the table as the hardware isn't over compelling. Personally I wouldn't be buying a brand new phone where the resolution is only 800x480, especially not when the screen sizes are 4.3" or so, it's just not enough.

I'm in the same place, only I currently have a 3GS. None of the options particularly appeal to me much now. I was pretty sure I'd go for the Nexus Prime due to the screen size and res, but I have a hard time justifying paying a top of the line price on a phone that has worse internals than cheaper ones already on the market (unless it has a better ecosystem going for it like the iPhone).

I'm tempted to wait for the iP5 myself, except the 3GS is feeling very dated now and the battery life has really declined lately.

CPU is as good as the competition i.e. Exynos. GPU is about 30% worse.

It is old, but they've been increasing the clock speed gradually. 200Mhz in Hummingbird to, 300Mhz in Droid 3 and Optimus 3D, to hopefully ~400Mhz in this.

Matches the CPU but worse GPU.

The CPU in the iphone 4s is only 800mhz and so this should be upto 50% better. The GPU does get destroyed as you said.

Performance doesn't just rely on frequency FYI. Different architectures result in vastly different performances at the same clock speed.

LOL - the green areas aren't even the same size. The S2 "thumb" has been drawn significantly smaller than the iphone one.

Something else to keep in mind: most people use their smartphone to browse the web, manipulate objects on-screen and type messages, and for those tasks they use both hands – not one. Worrying about how far a thumb stretches across a screen is soooo 2007.

The screen on the nexus prime sounds like its main selling point to me. At 720p with that size and super amoled plus it will be pretty awesome. Just a shame about the incredibly average CPU/gpu.

I'm sure 1.2ghz dual core with ICS will fly, whats so bad about the gpu? Is it that much of a deal breaker? Any other phones running the same chipset and gpu?

I don't think that anyone is saying that this will be slow. I can almost guarantee that it will be fine. What people are unhappy about is that fact that this will cost £500 and its internals are old hat. If they are releasing a phone and making a ho ha about it then they should make it at least a top of the range handset. The only thing about this handset that I am liking at the moment is the resolution.

On Giz

"I have problems with the truth of this leak. See the poster, under the Galaxy nexus nameplate is a row of icons. One of these seems to suggest this phone will have a TV tuner. This is not an unusual thing in Asia, but unless they are making a specific model for the asian market WITH a tuner (and an aerial which the phone shown does not have, then I call fake."

Thoughts?

The CPU is decently modern so when it comes to stuff like rendering webpages or general processing it'll be plenty fast, it's just partnered up with an old GPU.
