NHL 15

I didn't even know there was a demo until I checked this thread. Went to bed at 6.30 am up at 8am dl'ed it and played it till 9 am went back to sleep and then went to work at 12pm:)

The graphics sure seemed nice enough although they are not neither amazing or important for this type of game.

Picked it up and started to play and it feels like any other nhl game I have played which I like. THe cutscenes and whatnot seemed a little laggy not that this matters.

Haven;t managed to get in to a fight but I do like the game a lot although I would describe myself as a hardcore fan of the sport.

I am hoping they have a mode where you could have game mode of past legendary players. Who doesn't want a team of a Bobby Orr on a line with Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy. Larry Robinson and Denis Potvin defensive pairing with a goalie squad of Patrick Roy and Terry Sawchuk.

Or where you can play as legendary teams. The 4 cup winning Islanders, Montreal 5 cup team and of course the 70's 4 cup straight Habs. Also the 50's Redwings would be nice.

But for me the best part is when the puck goes in I like have always loved the sound of the goal with the deep tone. I hate the siren type goal horn.

I am hoping the rest of you guys find the demo enjoyable and would be interested on others people feedback. I am getting this without a doubt.

The default arcade and rookie difficulty spoils the demo you can almost score no matter what given situation. I play simulation and hardcore core setting.

In arcade/rookie mode the puck sticks to your stick. But in simulation hardcore there is more finesse involved.

But if you didn't like the arcade/rookie mode then having a more harder option is not going to change your mind about the game. Arcade/rookie mode is about accessibility to those who are not familiar with NHL or the Rules or the playstyle.

I don't think it is a necessity to follow the NHL or be familar with the Rules to enjoy the game. I think you just didn't like the game. Ice hockey games are hardly going to appeal to the wider audience when you have Fifa or NBA games.

I know nothing about basketball in the context of the sport, the history, neither can I stand to play it either. But I like the games.

The NHL series of games over the years had less and less of the rules implemented. Certainly nowhere near as the the first one I played which would be NHL 98.

Out of all the 4 main EA sports franchise games I wouldn't be suprised if the NHL series was the least popular compared to others. And it would not suprise me if this echoed true in North America as well.

In Europe it would be easily Fifa>NBA>MAdden>Nhl in terms of popularity.

North America it would probably be NBA/Madden>FIfA>Nhl.

I think Ice Hockey is a much easier sport to follow/play without knowing the rules. I play Madden for example and I'd probably hate the game if I didn't watch the NFL.

I've always liked the NHL games though before I even started following the real sport :p

Anyone noticed quite bad framerate drops during the demo (PS4) ? The first few days was fine, the demo ran like a dream, fired it up last night and it's like I'm having a fit. I quit the game and tried it again a few times, everytime had the same issue. Uninstalled right away, can't be doing with dross like that. I had this issue with NHL 13 on the PS3.

Download this on the xbox. It's not bad. Not as good as perhaps the video's made it out to be, but over all it's not a bad effort.

There is some frame rate stuttering even during the start-up video right at the beginning of the game when your first start it up which made me think that the overall experience wasn't going to be that good.

I think, for a first effort on next gen, it's ok. looking forward to seeing what the next few years brings.

As an ex-player, and from the perspective of "what would I do in x situation" the game does come across more realistic than the previous versions which is a good thing. Liking the physics which adds to the overall feel of the game and the all round presentation of the game is a huge step forward.

will I buy it... yeah, but not on day one.

As an ex-player

Bracknell Bees ? I never made the transition to Ice, I was an Inline player, played at county level too, nothing amazing but whatever :D

Played in D in front of Steven Fone who was the goaltender at club and county level. Steve has done well, managed to get to EIHL level with Coventry Blaze and Sheffield Steelers and is now at Manchester Phoenix.

Didn't like it. I just kept skating up and whacking it in the goal. Am i missing something?

Yes:

I don't follow the NHL, nor understand the rules fully.

Understanding the rules, and with a basic understanding of the tactics in hockey, and you'll probably enjoy it a lot more.

I'm enjoying the demo but find it a right pain not having the simple option of rematch once the game ends.:D

First world problems I guess.

How do you get a fight going btw ? I see the tap Triangle button but nothing happens ?

It's a lot easier to get in fights at the end of a play, where you have that second or two before the whistle goes (like when the goalie covers the puck and holds onto it), just go up to someone and hammer Y. If they don't accept the fight you'll probably still get a penalty though.

Another sure fire way of getting into a fight is by taking a shot on the goalie after the whistle goes for offside, you'll usually get an enforcer coming after you for that.

I managed to pick a fight eventually, got my backside handed to me :p

I tend to just spam in the fights, it usually works. I swear that's all anyone does online anyway, certainly the fights I've had.

I scored some amazing goals last night/this morning as I read over on r/ea_nhl about some new deke moves. The ones I particularly liked was when you go down on the left stick and right/left on the right stick, it does this awesome little cut (different to the one you get when you rotate from backhand to forehand on the right stick). If you're on a breakaway you can hold it out on your forehand or backhand, then do this little deke cut to the other side and lift it top shelf and you'll score most of the time. Do it on the backhand and it looks awesome as well.

Playing on Hardcore mode is so much better as well, it's a bit slower and a little more realistic. I'm only playing on Pro though, I tend to get beaten every game on All Star.

So is there no "online clubs" in this one??

Nope, no EASHL or GM Connected Online (or whatever it's called).

Apparently they're hoping to patch online team play (6v6), but it won't be full EASHL I don't think.

I found another deke last night which looks awesome and can lead to a goal on a breakaway. Basically you take it to your forehand with the right stick, then roll the right stick down, so that you're holding it behind you a bit, and then while holding that just tap LB (or L1 on PS), and it'll do a through the legs thing onto your backhand, if you do this in front of the goalie, preferably coming in at an angle, then immediately shoot on your backhand, you have a good chance of scoring.

Free trial is available on Xbox One now if you have EA Access, you will have to change you're locale on the console to US to play it though I think.

EDIT: Yes, you can.

I know not many people are interested by the looks of it, but I thought I'd post my thoughts on the full game.

Gameplay = almost perfect, I bloody love it.
Everything else = awful.

This just about sums things up:

I wasn't that bothered about some of the game mode ommissions as I usually play ultimate team anyway, but the game modes that are still in the game are so watered down it's unbelievable. The game's UI, particularly when in HUT and Be A GM is awful, it's slow, it's clunky, it's ugly.

Even things like creating your own player is so basic now. You pick a head from abotu 20 options, that's it. You can't change how you look, what hair you have, what facial hair you have, ANYTHING. You can't even enter your date of birth, or your home town, or choose your height and weight, or select an announcer name. It's so damn basic now.

It's shocking, I honestly felt ripped off having already pre-ordered the Ultimate Edition via the Xbox Store. Fortunately I've been able to get a full refund after speaking with Microsoft.

I'll only buy this again if they add some more stuff to the game, or it's mega cheap (under £30), and only a retail copy so I can trade it in when it's innevitably added to the EA Access Vault.

Really really dissapointed.

I can understand it to some degree, but even the modes that are there are just nothing compared to what they were. Considering they didn't port NHL 14 to Xbox One and PS4 so they could focus on making NHL 15 the best it could be, they've done a **** poor job.

I know that the NHL series is probably the least funded out of the four (FIFA, Madden, NBA), but still, it's such a joke. The only saving grace is that the gameplay is pretty good, so hopefully next year NHL 16 will be awesome.

Wait a sec - haven't played a sports game for 12 years so just to clarify these 'modes' a second...

Am I right in thinking I can't just pick a team and play a regular season? Or set up a local or online playoff bracket or custom tournament between friends?

if so, I may have to really re-think buying this. Those are the 2 things I'd have done the most.
No idea what be a pro and HUT are.

If I can do those 2 things though I'll pick this up anyway - played the demo and enjoyed the gameplay.

There's Be A GM, which will let you play a regular offline season, but you're the GM of the team as well, so you manage trades, contracts, free agents, salary caps, etc. I think you can turn some of this off, but it's not a simple pick a team, play a season mode.

You can't set up a local or online playoff bracket or custom tournament.

Be a Pro is where you create a player (with very limited customisation options now) and get drafted to an NHL team (in previous versions you could start out as a junior and work your way up, it was much more in depth). You play as one player on the team, except now you can't even simulate shifts where you're not on the ice, so you have to sit there and watch the game.

HUT is Hockey Ultimate Team, you basically play games, make coins, buy packs which give you items and players at random, then you can trade on the market, and in the end build up your ultimate team. Except even this is watered down from last year, and the whole interface is slow and crap which makes it a ball ache to play.

FIFA and Madden are light years ahead in terms of menu UI and game modes.

Thanks for the info - it's a pain looking things up on works internet!

not really sure what to do now then. I do have a gap in my rentals with month as there isn't much coming out so maybe I should stick NHL 15 on there and see what I think before making the purchase.

I 'feel' like I'm ready to get into 1 or 2 sports games and a racing game this year but having not played either genre for over a decade it makes me wonder what has changed...or am I simply just trying to fill a gap while there isn't that much out that interest me. (which will change in the next few months).

Not having custom tournaments is pretty poor - but maybe few peopel care about that. I'm coming from the era of playing sports games with your mates or not playing them at all so we used to get some beers in and set up a tournament for the evening.
Seemed to me like something which could now work online, even if not necessarily done all in 1 sitting.

Ah well - I can rent it and find out for myself what I think of the other modes. I've seen Ultimate team in Fifa at my mates but don't really know who any of the players are so didn't feel like I truly grapsed everything that was going on - plus I'd been drinking.
I don't follow football so other than really famous payers I haven't a clue who people are.

Think i'd like the mode in NHL but having clunk, slow menu's is a sure fire way to put me right off. I hate bad UI design so much.
