** NHL & Ice Hockey Discussion **

oh man, what an amazing few days.

took part in a scrimmage at Nottingham arena the other night. bit rusty on ice as i have been playing inline a lot and neglected it a little. terrible on my edges.

was really amazing to be playing in an arena, it was empty and the hockey level was beginner at best but considering my handicap of being a terrible skater on ice, this means my stick handling and shooting capabilities are someone dumbed down. I can only imagine what it would be like playing in that place when it is full. real sense of scale even though notts arena is around half the size of an NHL venue

went to watch the panthers last night. sadly lost to the blaze but what a game. really enjoyable and some intense plays happening all over the ice.

Winter Classic tomorrow. going round to an inline teammates house to watch it. My money is on Boston with the way that the Habs have been playing recently.

Been warming up with the 'road to the winter classic' series this evening :D

happy new year OcUK hockey crew! hope your team wins lots in 2016. (unless they are playing the flyers then I hope they get spanked)

I bloody love hockey!!!

Whoop Whoop... playoffs start today yeh?

Its only by 1 win but finally the Ducks seem to have a bit of life in them. We're pretty damn lucky to have such a week division this year but hopefully we can continue not to suck as hard as the beginning of the season.

:(:(:(:(:(

lol

NOPE!!

Blues are playing utterly terrible right now. I'd love to see a league wide stat of how many 2 goal leads have been blown by teams that cost them points - Blues must be up there, if not top of that pile!!

At this rate they will drop out of a playoff sport soon as they have played more games than any other team in the league and teams like the Wild have a bunch of games in hand

The saving grace is that the pacific teams are all struggling so 99% likely both Wild Cards will come from the central
So they only have to beat the Avs/Jets which shouldn't be hard

i actually dont understand why the blues are having such luck. has to be down to the coaching system really. i can't see why a team with that much raw talent is unable to win games by a solid margin.

meanwhile, what is even happening in florida? those guys are just smashing it ay?
I would watch them but can only tolerate their road games as their home arena camera angle is disgusting.

Also, Delighted by the Lecavalier and Schenn trade to the kings. the fact that we got rid of that pair in one shot and also got a living human being as a trade was just crazy. [having read the scouting report for Jordan Weal, he seems a promising fit for our system] but to come out of it with a draft pick as well is just mindblowing.

sucking up that half salary is crappy but our cap room to bring up new players is important. and more importantly for me it keeps Ghostisbehere in the NHL which is what I want to see.

beating the habs and the wild. happy days.

is it too early to start picking out playoff contenders? what are everyone thinking?

Gotta be the Ducks :p

Dallas or Chicago again I feel. I think the Florida spree at the moment is a bit of a fluke, not taking away from them how their playing, but I feel the bubbles gonna burst sooner or later with them.

or its too early to tell and I suck at predicting stuff.

Yeah no idea what is going wrong in St Louis right now - 3rd game in a row of giving up a 2 goal lead and losing in OT or shootout. It was a great game vs Ducks to be fair but they should have certainly won it. Outscored 9-0 after the 2nd period lately so it's a problem after 40 minutes for whatever reason.

I personally feel they are a better team than the last few years and I'm sure they will start playing for 60 mins again soon.

Panthers are on a tear like but agree...11 wins is a better streak that they are really. But hey credit to them they have a very promising young team with a solid Vet goaltender so while they have had some luck they are still capable of a playoff spot for sure and maybe even an upset in the first round.

As for playoffs...it is early but you gotta be looking at the Caps / Stars / Blackhawks as the 3 faves so far. Caps and Stars have been great and you can't bet against Chicago.

But i'm dreaming of the Blues finally winning as always!! lol

Came on to post the exact same thing.

The ovi goal was just insane. I see Nash is earning his pay check by not going stick to puck with Ovi. This is basic defensive play, I would wager he will be getting a severe telling off when they do some video coaching on that play.

As good as the Ovi goal was I think a lot of the credit should go to Holtby. Absolutely magical save from.him to develop that play and keep.them in the game.

Also we 4-0 the isles. Which is nice. :D

Game was so terribly reffed it was just shocking. Both teams played well, Ducks did their usual "lets not bother playing in the second period" then brought it back to the end of it and managed to do their late comebacks as usual. Seemed to be a good give and go from both teams.

Reffing seems to be an issue in the NHL at the moment, one call to one team but wont call it for the other O.o One of the blues cross checked Vatanen from behind right next to the boards (after the whistle) and refs just ignored it, seem penalties being given for a lot less.

Yeah it was a good back and forth game with both teams have periods of control - just getting a bit sick of the Blues not being able to control the game when they have a 2 goal cushion. Given they are strong team with talent to keep possession they are being very lax with the the puck at times.

Then they get 2 points last night when they didn't really deserve it! so swings in roundabouts I guess.

I think ref calls are an issue in a lot of sports! Just don't seem to be able to get any real consistency with it

Watching the replays on the save, Holtby saved the first whack but was actually Schmidt who managed to get his stick in the way on the second attempt, which then lead to the Ovi goal.

Unreal either way, here's hoping he gets to 500 tonight (and I can't watch tonights game until Tuesday evening so will be avoiding all the usual websites until then as usual to avoid spoiling the result :( )

can I ask how "good" you were at Ice Skating before you started Ice Hockey please ?

Running/racing is my main sport, but a year ago I took up Ice Skating (figure ! btw prob had the most painful injuries from this sport than anything else, including years of Martial Arts ) to be able to go out on the ice with my daughter - but I don't tend to do things by half and my daughter gave up ages back, and I'm now on Skate UK Bronze/private group lessons and am skating around 6 hours a week.

I've seen that there is a beginners ice hockey training club/team at a weekend at my local rink and it suggests just basic skating skills required - but not really sure what that means.

I've no intention to give up the figure skating side of things but would love to do something competitive skating wise and I used to love normal hockey - hence interest in ice hockey.

cheers

I started playing Inline hockey when I was 9. Played up until I was 18 and stopped because the sport died off and there was no team for me to play for locally. Picked it up again last year aged 29 and wish I had never stopped.

I would say I am a very strong Inline skater but Ice skating is completely different. I can skate backwards, change directions etc but struggle using my edges effectively. Inline causes some very bad habits on ice and it usually takes me about half of the ice time I get to become comfortable on ice.

If you can skate at all, you can play reccy hockey. you dont need to be great but being able to skate without thinking so you can concentrate on your stick is a big plus. There are some players who come to rec hockey practices i have attended who are genuinely terrible skaters and probably would benefit from lessons.

if you are on the ice 6 hours a week, you will be at a good advantage so give it a go. its the best sport in the world. If you need any advice or anything just ask :)

Im at level 5 of the SkateUK program.
I played rec hockey 20 years ago. And i'm a better skater now. My lil bro has just started playing again after playing at EPL level years ago. He says you'll learn to skate better whilst playing in kit as you don't tend to 'think' about what you're being taught. You just get on with it and pick it up.
Whilst i'm no expert, from my own experiences of learning, then practising afterwards, i'd agree.
Bukster, just get some kit on and get on there dude, sounds like you're a more competent skater than me and i'm ready to get on there for a scrimmage.

Going to New York next month and have managed to get tickets to go and see the New Jersey Devils v Tampa Bay. Was looking to get the Rangers as it would have been easier to get to but alas was a bit too expensive really. I could have seen the NJ Devils v Rangers but the ticket prices for that game were significantly higher.

Really looking forwards to it!

this nhl.tv thing is absolutely crap.

every time the game goes to a commercial break, it restarts the stream.
