NieR: Automata announced for PC, game shipping Early 2017 on both platforms

I got 20% off at GMG so went for it. It looks interesting enough, feels quite original and I see inspiration from games from years back. I do feel the graphics could be a bit better, but gameplay will make up for that.

I love the Japanese feel and I've got it set on Japanese language with English subtitles. I've just got to the very first settlement area so probably just scratching the surface... But what about that save system; brutal.
I intend to get this but big gaps in between saves as my absolute pet hate in gaming! Japanese games tend to be the worst offenders too. Resident Evil 5 & 6 were really bad for the mid level checkpoints that you would start from if you got killed but if you quit the game and came back to it later it put you way back to the start of the level. Aaargh! I mean why do they think this is a good idea? Unless the gameplay is something like in Cuphead or Megaman, I don't want to replay the same parts of the game again. Does my head right in! Rant over.

The saving is fine once you open up the City.

Tempted by it but trying to decide whether to get it for PS4 or PC as most steam reviews say the PC port is terrible and it's only £30 on ps4. Given I could probably sell the physical ps4 version for a £10-15 that makes them near enough the same price (if not cheaper on ps4).

I guess if I buy it on steam though I could at least refund it if I don't like the game or the port is bad enough to impact gameplay.

I used the "tool" to fix it. Was simple enough, I think it was a double click and go.

One of my mate's played it as is and completed it over and over, wasn't bothered at all. We are both on AMD if that matters.

I will dig out details of the tool later if need be but I am sure it's only a Google away.

Had a quick go last night maybe an hour and I enjoyed it. Found it ran fine just a bit soppy in cutscenes but certainly playable
I used the FAR mod, some info here

I got a perfomance boost (which was fine anyway tbh), whichever sync tech I used then worked (I think this was the mod but also got a Freesync screen around that time.. cannot remember exactly). The game looked a lot better as well. I think the textures and/or the res was running in 720, the mod did it properly at 1080.

I am no expert, as you can probably tell, so please use at your own risk. That link is still on my Steam subscribed so I am sure I got the info from there originally.

When you complete that first mission, just wow, so so good. Some of the best gaming I have had in recent times. Some of the settings, scenes, the "randomness" of it all. And that OST is sublime, it really is. I had this odd realisation of really bloody well enjoying a game that almost surprised me!

Anyway, obviously I loved it. I hope you enjoy it ;)

Loved the mixture of genres in the opening mission! I think I stopped just when I got to the more open area after that mission :)
Thanks for the links I'll take a look

Anyone played this via steam link? If so any good?

Really enjoying it, couple of points to note...

1) For some reason it won't launch in big picture mode. I have to launch it on my machine, click the Windows button or similar to steal focus, then fullscreen it. Then works flawlessly.
2) Things like cutscene stuttering are game issues rather than system specific, and FAR will fix those (going to have a play with it tonight).

A couple of things that are putting me off this are:

Save facility, it's awful.

Lack of fast travel, trudging from one place to another is just mind numbing.

I doubt that I'll complete this.

You haven’t unlocked fast travel or save anywhere yet. Keep playing, you won’t have to suffer that for very long.

When you replay the game with different characters for the extra story/endings these features are already unlocked due to where you start.

I've sunk 6hrs in.

I can fast travel between the spaceship and the base camp, that's it. I had to run all the way from the Amusement Park to the base camp and back to deliver some oil, and it's at that point I was thinking, nah this is getting tedious.

You’re almost at the point where you’ve unlocked it then. Game opens up and becomes much easier to move around.

Stick with it. This game didn’t get the praise it did by having fatal flaws like spending hours running around. It truly is excellent, and builds spectacularly well.

Completing the game the second and third time offers unique story and playstyles while not repeating much at all.

OK, will stick with it.

Thanks.

I played an hour or so. How much of the gameplay is spent switching between the genres? It's a nice touch, but a bit jack of all trades.
