Dawn of the Final Day - 2 hours remain.
Today at lunch-break at work I noticed the TV was airing a Nintendo Switch ad. Nobody took notice of it or was even staring in the TV's direction. Though to be fair, the one guy who I know does play games, wasn't at lunch during that time.
Personally, there's nothing blowing me away about the Switch hardware itself. I.e. it's the games that matter. I don't see how a video on the menus and stuff would be interesting, there isn't much there lol. I sure hope more games get announced this year, it would make it an amazing Christmas present if so.
And bundles. They missed the mark on that one. Where's the version with Zelda on the box that costs a tad more and includes a copy of Zelda? I remember WiiU had a couple of different bundles at launch, the Nintendo Land one and the ZombiU one that included a Pro controller too. There's something a bit sweeter of getting the first game from the same box as the console. Hopefully they do that soon.
There's a whole generation of 'gamers' who choose to watch full play throughs online rather than buying and playing for themselves. I don't understand it either.
I watch playthroughs of a few games. 3 reasons why:
1) I have no interest in playing that particular game or don't know whether or not I'd like that game. Some games are barely games and more like interactive movies. I.e. not fun to play, but good story (Until Dawn or Heavy Rain for example)
2) Watching games is a lot easier and less-time consuming than playing games. I'm a lazy bum and am also a completionist, so I spend way too much time on individual games than I need to (e.g. still haven't finished Fire Emblem Awakening)
3) Often I watch them for the person playing them, usually the personality of the player is what is the drive. Sometimes I'll even watch someone play a game that I've already played myself
Most of all, if I watch a Let's Play of a game that I like the look of, then I buy it. It happened with Pokemon on 3DS, I stopped watching the Let's Play and just bought a 3DS XL & the game and played it myself. Same thing with Stardew Valley. It's better than a review in that it gives a real-world view of what the game is about, so people can find out about it and figure out whether they like it or not. Let's Plays are favoured over reviews sometimes even. Watching a Let's Play and playing the game are not mutually exclusive. The term Let's Play sort of came about from people playing along with the videos.
I have no interest in the Switch, I purchased a Wii and lack of quality third party support was what got my goat (Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure is the exception).
Was always a chicken and egg thing, I hope for Nintendos sake, the same does not happen here but they did little to put the brakes on that train with the Wii.
Nintendo need to stop focusing on hardware for everyones sake.
This is my concern. While I myself probably will eventually buy the Switch regardless if it gets 1st party games like Pokemon/Monster Hunter/Metroid (yeah I know MH isn't 1st party but those devs are in deep with Nintendo), I would like the Switch to gain popularity and be a success. As much as most of us only buy Nintendo hardware for Nintendo games, most consoles are bought by people who also want to play 3rd party (and probably don't have a PC for that). For Switch to not fail like WiiU, it needs to have proper 3rd party support, especially so if Nintendo are stubborn that it's a home console first, rather than a handheld. And if the Switch succeeds, it just means more developers will be willing to develop for it and more games for Switch owners to play. To folks who are buying the Switch, keep that in mind.
