*** Nintendo Switch ***

I could end up spending a ton of money on my switch.

Nine Parchments out in a few days and it looks like it's right up my tree!

Was playing the demo of that this morning, Is there a checkpoint or something?
It actually can be kinda hard if you don't give it some respect, but when you die you go back to the very beginning, did you manage to finish the demo?

I wish there were demos of the big games, I want to try Splatoon 2, but don't want to keep fluffing £40 away.

I bought Splatoon, can’t say I’m impressed with it. Also unless I am being dumb it only limits you to 2 maps, and the maps rotate every couple of hours which gets a bit boring as you play the same maps over and over.

Got a £10 Argos voucher today so bought an eshop gift card with it and used it to part fund Rocket League. Not sure why everyone is bashing the graphics, I thought it looked pretty good :p

Also seemed to have ended up getting mario rabbids which I didn't think I'd like but absolutely love it. Very underated game

I'm about 10 hours in on XC2 and enjoying it, it is very Japanese and I could see that some people wouldn't get on with that.

Only problem is that in portable mode the quality of the graphics can really suffer.

Keep at it until you reach ranked matches.

Game MASSIVELY improves there.

Yeah I was playing for an hour or so in bed last night and damn it looks, er, blocky. It really feels like the game could do with another pass of optimisation (which again is in stark contrast to XB-X on the weaker Wii U hardware....).

I must be enjoying it though as I re-did the same fight 7 times... :o

I'm about four hours into Xenoblade 2 and I really have no desire to continue with it. It's overwhelming with the menus, options, customisation etc. And I typically enjoy that aspect of gaming (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance I loved).

The voice acting is pants so I downloaded the Japanese pack, which makes it much more bearable.

The below shot makes me anxious. I took this last night and felt pretty much like that's as much as I can handle:

It seems like they leave all the effects intact and just vary the resolution. Really they should tone down some of the effect heavy stuff and remove some of the grass.

In portable mode I noticed it as well, for some reason it doesn't look very clear or crisp. When hooked up to my 1080p monitor though, everything looks perfect. Could be poor downscaling or something?

Either way I'm enjoying this game a lot more than I thought I would, although I did find the gameplay a bit complicated at first since it feels like it's throwing a lot at you. Once you get the hang of it though, it's actually really fun.

30 hours clocked in and just finished chapter 3, I've no idea if I'm even halfway :p.

EDIT: Wait, you have to download the language packs first? I was wondering why I couldn't find it in the settings...

30 hours lol you smashed that this weekend then! I'm at around 12 I think and in a similar place to you. My characters are levels 19-20 now.

Post on the last page - it does seem overwhelming when you see all that information. You can ignore most of it really and just do the main quests. I did some side missions in that town but once you get the main story out of the way I quickly moved on to the next place. I'll go back there eventually.

Collecting items can feel like a slog and I know there will be some grind later on but the story is good enough for me to want to know what happens next. I am loving the two main characters more than I thought I would. Rex was a bit hmm at first but he's actually OK.

To be fair even though I am as far as I am the game is still giving me tutorials on the combat. Once you start understanding the waves you can do some massive damage which is very satisfying. I haven't sussed it all out yet but occasionally it clicks and it is glorious. The combat is a lot deeper than it first seems. I am terrible on the timing of QTE's but I'll get over it.

I think it is running some sort of resolution scaler in portable mode as visual artifacting (obvious shifts in clarity during a scene) is very obvious if you look for them. It is the first game that I have noticed such a scaling method visible during motion. I think we might be seeing something like a 50% scale on the 720p base (given it looks blocky on the native 720p Switch screen).

It helps when you don't press A when it says to press B. I was starting to rage that my special move wasn't working but then realized I was hitting the wrong button.... :o

The combat is similar to XB-X but the UI is very different (this is the bit I don't like in comparison).

That actually sounds like the reason thinking about it. I'm sure with a bit of tweaking though they could get native 720p to work, it's not really doing the game justice as you can tell the developers put in a lot of work in the environment. Even Zelda and Mario still looked great in portable mode.

I have a really bad habit of trying to explore everywhere, so most of my time is actually spent on that instead of doing the actual quests. Although, it usually means due to all the collection points I visit, most of the fetch side quests are instantly done :p.

Yeah as Garak mentioned above I think they have left in most of the graphical assets and just focused on dropping the resolution. This only works so much until the bottleneck becomes something else. I would be interested in a Digital Foundry breakdown of the game, both in docked and portable mode. Even in docked mode I still feel like XB-X looked better (at least in the area I am in now) and performed better.
