I've never played Splatoon but I'm struggling to see the appeal of it - are you basically running around an arena splatting everything with your colour to win?
There are several multiplayer game modes. The standard (and most casual mode) is simply cover more of the map in your teams ink (while fragging each other), but you can cover up each others ink so matches can be quite back and forth. The ranked modes (Tower Control, Rainmaker and Splat Zones) are more intense as they have focused objectives that require more coordination and strategy to win.
What makes Splatoon most unique is how your teams ink coverage on the map influences how you move around and approach opponents. You have to be aware of the current ink coverage around you because you can only swim in your own ink and doing so allows you to evade the opponents attacks (but doesn't make you invincible) and makes you hard to spot.
It is a multiplayer game first and foremost, but the original had quite a fun single player mode too, it was short at around 4-5 hours but sweet - the final boss is one of my favourite bosses ever!. I expect Splatoon 2's single player will be a nice addition too.
There's a good chance they'll have another "Global Testfire" event before release so you may get a chance to try it out.
