Nissan to close plant sparking anger!

I blame Brexit!

...FOR EVERYTHING.

Out of EU solidarity, we should reject Nissan's generous offer and close the Sunderland plant, instead.

That way, all the Brexit hating Guardian readers, and pro EU OcUK forumites, will get to tell everyone 'we told you so...'

We'll just gloss over the fact that the Honda plant did shut down and Brexit was cited as one of the reasons

Anyway, the pandemic pretty much rendered all the worry over the economic impact of Brexit as moot.

From linked article..

.."Honda said the move was due to global changes in the car industry and the need to launch electric vehicles, and it had nothing to do with Brexit."

"This is not a Brexit-related issue for us, it's being made on the global-related changes I've spoken about.
"We've always seen Brexit as something we'll get through, but these changes globally are something we will have to respond to. We deeply regret the impact it will have on the Swindon community."

Yes, Honda did posture when trying to add weight to the remain argument, but ultimately they know that putting too much weight on Brexit could have some backlash..

Cool Story Bro: My neighbour worked there for many years, I saw him go through ups and downs and it was obvious how they struggle to react to events in the world.. I eventually got him a job where I work, despite being a moderately small outfit it's far more stable then Honda ever were and he's much happier.

I seem to remember a lot of disdain directed towards Sunderland and the fact they had voted leave would mean Nissan would definitely be closing and what idiots they were.

Nissan only ever said they would have issues if we went down the 'no deal, WTO rules' route and implemented tariffs, as it would impact the viability of their business - I don't recall them ever saying they were reconsidering the viability of the Sunderland plant from brexit alone.

Quite! You will be telling me next they want access to our fishing, I was told the we had nothing to offer.

That seems to be where we are headed still.

Wasn't really a surprise considering the investment at the plant would have been wasted, especially so when car purchases were trending down before the pandemic basically nullified it. Goodness knows what the turmoil created by Ghosn meant for the leadership as well.

However, there's a lot going on in Japan at the moment, how Chinese manufacturing comes into the current sentiment, what the situation is after the current models finish their production life at the plant and considering the thread's motive, how whatever agreement or lack there of about tariffs will be for cars affects future decision-making... it's rather up in the air.

Regardless, good for the people of Sunderland, slightly curious if there were incentives we'll be paying for, but whatever, incentives aren't exactly new and the area needs investment.

The plant was/is the most efficient car plant in Europe, I believe. Makes sense to keep and consolidate production there.

There were lots of people writing off the plant and city after Brexit. “Turkeys voting for Christmas”, was one particular phrase used as I recall. That was one of the more polite ones.

Ok I thought we were all lazy!

It makes perfect sense if they want to make Nissan smaller and more efficient with less vehicles offered - it's in a strategic partnership with Renault who already have factories all over Europe remember. Nissan sells more cars in the UK and Russia than in most continental European countries combined.
