No AHCI Mode ! , Quick respond!

If you only have IDE mode and no AHCI mode then you could have a read here...

http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=505&Itemid=38

and have a look at what it could mean when running under such a situation. The Sandforce section being apt for your choice of SSD, IIRC.

Also, FWIW, you need to be in AHCI mode for any future updates for the firmware, if that works out to be important.

However I'm not sure how an SSD will perform on the NVidia chipset of that motherboard. This thread *might* give you an insight of what to expect (?)....

If you don't have AHCI mode then TRIM is not going to work im afraid. Have you checked for a BIOS update that might enable it perhaps? I know some boards don't have an AHCI mode which means they are totally unsuitable for use with a SSD due to the reason I stated above.

are you sure....?

But what about SSD TRIM?

TRIM is non-specific to either SATA controller mode, and will work equally well in both IDE and AHCI-mode. Benchmark Reviews will soon publish a detailed report that illustrates the recovery levels for each SSD controller tested here.
Ordered this instead

Patriot Inferno 60GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (PI60GS25SSDR)

Nope no bios updates anymore , old board.

Will it be faster than the drive i have currently?

hitachi HDP725050GLA

Thanks all :D

have a read at those articles I listed they will help you to understand what it could mean in performance etc by running in IDE mode and also not using an Intel chipset as your motherboard uses an NVidia one.

Best of luck :)

To my knowledge AHCI mode needs to be enabled for TRIM to work but I could be wrong. I have a PC at home that I would love to install a SSD into but haven't because the Asus board does not have an AHCI mode :(

That's great aslong as it works even without ACHI i'll be pleased , gotta be better than my hard drive... I can't even find my hard drive and it's specs! lol

Thankyou

Hitachi DeskStar P7K500 500 GB SATA Hard Drive

Read speed of just under 82MB/s
An 18.7 ms average access time

wow that's poor :eek::eek:

As I have noted, with my links, there are potential performance issues when using IDE mode over that of AHCI but AFAIK Trim is not dependent on being in AHCI mode to function, check out that link I posted and quoted.

This is my current drive :D

damn bad new, for me too since i do have a nvidia and i was about to buy a SSD today, lucky,i read this post

Why? , what's the problem i read it too... It's still a HUGE improvement over a fast hard drive!. You're going to notice a difference , if you stick with the standard windows drivers TRIM works!. AHCI however doesn't but atleast when you do upgrade you have the AHCI option anyway.

I've been reading up on it all evening and the buy is totaly recommended

Personally I would just stick with IDE mode... I'm stuck with it myself since I've got ICH7 with no AHCI mode... and it's still blazing fast compared to waiting for that HDD read/write head to move into position every 10 milliseconds.

well i have heard that you would need to be in ahci mode to firmware your SSD? well does that mean what ever firmware i get i will have to accept until i get a controller card or new motherboard.

AHCI is a subset of RAID so if you have a RAID option, you can probably use that and just not put any drives into a RAID array and you'll be using AHCI.

heh , first i've heard of this as i have a RAID and NON-RAID option in my bios

Any links to back this up? :D

im using a P5N-E SLI motherboard which does not have AHCI, my OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB is running at blistering speeds. No hassle it just worked from the word go and is on a decent firmware (1.23). TRIM is all done by the Operating System. It will be compliant on any format be it IDE or AHCI.
P.S
Windows 7 alligns the SSD for you already and is the most suited OS for SSD's.
