No cold callers

If you have a no-cold callers sign isnt it againced the law now for them to still knock? Sure i read it somewhere but not sure.

I've been working from home recently, and have been getting annoyed by...

...The stupid delivery guy from a certain parcel delivery firm couldn't grasp that and didn't bother ringing the bell to deliver a package  ...

That's a little harsh in my opinion. I live in the sticks and generally the delivery guys go the extra mile (literally) to get my package to me. I've seen parcel delivery wagons pull up in weather that I certainly wouldn't go out in.

I put this up outside our door, the sign is the same size as a credit card. Still get the odd cold caller. Not as bad as a handwritten note I saw today as follows "DO NOT LEAVE DELIVERIES WITH NEIGHBOURS" ...charming lol.

Edit: BTW, I had a thread a long time ago, basically gypsies cold called my grandparents who declined their garden work, they took advantage and turned up in the morning when we were sleeping, hacked our trees and demanded money. In hindsight I would've called the police on the spot (I called after they left and they got away), my grandpa was agitated about repercussions or payback if we called, so he paid them.

From now on I take a hard-line on cold callers, interrupting them if they are talking to my grandparents. Be firm, you set the ground rules, its your home.

I appreciate its a job for some, but opening your door to any stranger is a risk, opportunists will size up your household, the people in it, and take advantage if they can.

Of course it isn't.

Also the reason the a lot of sales people ignore these stickers is because the majority of people who put them up don't have the mental capacity or determination to actually say no and shut the door, you would be amazed at how often marketing companies will get a sale from someone with a "No cold callers" sticker, even I managed it and I hated the work with a passion.

The trick is to not let them start talking.

"The stupid delivery guy from a certain parcel delivery firm couldn't grasp that and didn't bother ringing the bell to deliver a package but it is amazing the amount of people walking past that stop to read it, frown or grimace, then mosy on down the road. They generally look in the house windows as they pass too."

'The stupid delivery guy from a certain parcel delivery firm couldn't grasp...'
is the bit I found harsh - around here they make an effort.

I had the wife in hysterics the other day due to winding a salesman up.

I opened the door and when he started his waffle I just asked him what he was doing and didn't he see the sign. He asked what sign. I said the sign that says I don't want to be disturbed by people like you. He said there was no sign. So i looked, then started accusing him of stealing my sign, shouted inside for the wife to phone the police because this lad had stole my sign. There never was a sign.

My dogs do a good job of clearing people off as they are quite loud, however, the real problem for me are tax dodging gypsy scum bag rag and bone men. One a day at least shouting from his van, a few even knock the doors and I've even found a couple under my car port. :(

"Window Salesman will be shot on sight."

Epic sign lol Or just answer the door with some model of a decapitated head. "Oh hi there, sorry now's not a good time. Our sacrificial lamb ran off so we had to use poor Sue here. Gullable lass didn't know she had it coming! Toodleoo!"

I cant remember fully the conversation. But I was talking to our local CPO and he said the No Cold Caller sign, doesn't do anything. It doesn't stand up in court, but the police can ask you to move on. As it was something to do with by laws

This explains it

Ok what if you took the idea a little further, let’s say the sign read “Cold Callers Submit To Sexual Degradation”.

Now, if they knock on the door, does that imply consent?

You found it harsh that I called a guy that couldn't work out whether he was a cold caller or not, when he had a legitimate reason to knock on my door stupid? You found it this way because your particular delivery driver is good?

How is this in any way related?

Seems to work well!

Um, as my friends are polite they would call before they came round. I've never had anyone I know stop by unannounced, besides I have a mobile they could call.

You would get a note through the door about a parcel.

The only situation I can think of is when someone comes to read the gas or electric meter. But to be honest they **** me off with that anyway by coming unannouced (I have to disconnect my PC and move a load of crap to get to my gas meter), so I'm not really bothered about them, they leave a note as well anyway.

how about their is a cyclist or young child who gets hit by a car outside your house, the driver doesn't know where he is or doesn't have a phone (some people dont take their phone with them if they are going to the gym or playing football, etc), they knock on your door for help, you don't answer, they then have to try other doors and nobody is in, by the time they get hold of someone and the call is made the ambulance arrives 30 seconds too late.

a bit far fetched i know, but it could happen, i would rather open the door and say not interested, than not open it at all.

like i said, i had people who had come all the way from a foreign country asking about their friends across the road and whether i knew they had gone on holiday or were away out for dinner, etc.

My mum just tells them she's not interested and when they make the hard sell she slams the door on them which is fair enough...

However when we were walking through the town market there was a guy there from eOn or some energy supplier who wouldn't take no for an answer and when we walked past him for a third she denounced him which caught him completely off guard :p

I've been working from home recently, and have been getting annoyed by the amounts of people knowcking on the door/ringing the bell for no good reason (to me, at least).

Several times a day there's salesmen, charities, canvassers for various local entities, etc.

So I've put a sign up. Simply states 'no cold callers'. The stupid delivery guy from a certain parcel delivery firm couldn't grasp that and didn't bother ringing the bell to deliver a package  but it is amazing the amount of people walking past that stop to read it, frown or grimace, then mosy on down the road. They generally look in the house windows as they pass too.

How would you react if you saw that up in a porch window? I just want to stop being bugged for no good reason!

My aunt has a little printed note on her front door that made me smile.

POSTMAN
"If you have a parcel in your sack, please leave it around the back."

Bit of poetry or humour may be good for your sign Gilly? I always remember seeing similar signs to yours as a newspaper boy and always thinking fair do's; along with grumpy gits.

Any suggestions for a spot of humour or poetry in Gilly's note? I may try tomorrow, too tired now.

*Edit. N ot feeling very charitable this morning. "If your coming to cold call, **** off I don't want to know at all."

Just moon the next one that puts their nose to your window. Oh and maybe put an addendum to your sign stating, "Except fool delivery drivers who think this applies to them."
