Why can't this be standard.

Because it has to be called soliciting, everyone else is wrong.

I've been working from home recently, and have been getting annoyed by...

That's a little harsh in my opinion. I live in the sticks and generally the delivery guys go the extra mile (literally) to get my package to me. I've seen parcel delivery wagons pull up in weather that I certainly wouldn't go out in.
If you have a no-cold callers sign isnt it againced the law now for them to still knock? Sure i read it somewhere but not sure.
What's harsh?

"The stupid delivery guy from a certain parcel delivery firm couldn't grasp that and didn't bother ringing the bell to deliver a package but it is amazing the amount of people walking past that stop to read it, frown or grimace, then mosy on down the road. They generally look in the house windows as they pass too."
'The stupid delivery guy from a certain parcel delivery firm couldn't grasp...'
is the bit I found harsh - around here they make an effort.

You found it harsh that I called a guy that couldn't work out whether he was a cold caller or not, when he had a legitimate reason to knock on my door stupid? You found it this way because your particular delivery driver is good?
How is this in any way related?
Cool it chap - you are in danger of sounding like a complete and utter ****er...
Sorry but this is the truth.
Um, as my friends are polite they would call before they came round.I've never had anyone I know stop by unannounced, besides I have a mobile they could call.
You would get a note through the door about a parcel.
The only situation I can think of is when someone comes to read the gas or electric meter. But to be honest they **** me off with that anyway by coming unannouced (I have to disconnect my PC and move a load of crap to get to my gas meter), so I'm not really bothered about them, they leave a note as well anyway.

I've been working from home recently, and have been getting annoyed by the amounts of people knowcking on the door/ringing the bell for no good reason (to me, at least).
Several times a day there's salesmen, charities, canvassers for various local entities, etc.
So I've put a sign up. Simply states 'no cold callers'. The stupid delivery guy from a certain parcel delivery firm couldn't grasp that and didn't bother ringing the bell to deliver a packagebut it is amazing the amount of people walking past that stop to read it, frown or grimace, then mosy on down the road. How would you react if you saw that up in a porch window? I just want to stop being bugged for no good reason!
My Great Aunt (my Mum's Aunt in case you didn't realise!), 93 years young, has a sign similar to this on her front door:

Seems to work well!
