No Man's Sky - Procedural space game

I enjoyed my stint, but once I got to the centre of the galaxy and saw what happened I was left with a sour taste.

On the other hand it is kind of an amusing moment - you don't know whether to laugh or facepalm yourself :s

and how nothing persists in the universe

Can even see it in the new trailer how stuff just pops in around you like things coming to life in an amusement park as you approach/press button and for me it kills any immersion or illusion (to a degree this is true of most games but in this game they don't even hide it).

I truly do believe this is almost an entirely different game. Just reading some bits online now the last hour, we can kinda forget what No Man Sky used to be, this looks massively different.

Multi Crewed ships also by the look of it.

Hide and seek would be fun, especially when making tunnels.

Haha, yeah.

And to think I avoided spoilers at all cost and took my time getting to the centre. Fail.

I wish I could. It is still nowhere close to what we were promised years ago, but at least it looks like a promising step.

https://youtu.be/e5d5Mo-Gw_U?t=68 exactly the same way things just pop in wherever you happen to be - so not completely different. It gives an illusion of persistence but as soon a you try to access that persistence you realise it is just an illusion and there is nothing actually there and I don't believe from anything in the trailer this is any different.

It annoyed me a bit as even just that simple progression of getting off the first planet, leaving the first system, making your way to the centre in itself is kind of epic - with a bit more crafted gameplay around it it would have killed and there was so much potential there with the hints of ancient races and stuff, monoliths and abandoned bases that seemed to hint at story, etc. but it was all either way too inaccessible to figure out if there was anything more interconnected or just that a vague hint at something that didn't exist in the game :( or just meaningless procedural elements that looped around on themselves until you got bored of it.

You can tell that from the trailer??? come on...lol. When was the last time you played it, or even at all ;) I know you said you played it after each update, but did you really?

I see this typical response from disgruntled gamers that refuse to give the game or Hello Games continued support over a difficult 2 year period any credit, then just spout of misguided ill informed opinions. The game has changed massively since launch, even the last big update provided a very good game with so much more content added. As a player of the game, I can tell you from that trailer, I saw ZERO frames of any basic gameplay showing anything regarding repetitive rubbish. This trailer showed everything that was new and fresh.

love this....those new clouds and textures :)

I wouldn't waste my time trying to reason with someone who criticises No Man's Sky for having repetitive gameplay, and yet plays F1 2016! I couldn't think of a more dull and monotonous game if I tried! I'd wager he buys each and every iteration too. :p

Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on the update next week! If you fancy a go, give me a shout on Steam! I can usually be found on the OcUK Discord also.

Was that aimed at me? Not sure why you are attacking me tbh. Reported. I also haven’t bought one since. NMS does indeed fit with the many repetitive games I own though.

Sure thing, I've hundreds and hundreds of hours on the game. Cant wait for NEXT (sorry :p) week. I'm quite astonished they've improved the game that much watching that trailer. HG deserve a lot of credit for not running off with the money and leaving the game in that really bad launch state. They've clearly devoted so much time over the years, developing what they wanted to develop before the flood and SONY taking a giant dump on them. To keep working on the game to turn things around, and also give us this excellent ARG over time deserves a lot of credit.

Agreed, the beginning was epic. Then there was just no gameplay. Kept me entertained for a while and I was a big supporter until reaching the centre. There were some neat planets.

Can't believe they've blatantly stolen the design of my favourite EVE battleship, the Nestor, and dropped it into this pile of ****. IS there no end to this company's shady shenanigans?

LOL I noticed those but I was thinking more of Battlestar Galactica which did them before Eve and even that is probably borrowed from somewhere else though they do look closer to the Nestor probably.

EDIT: Mind you it is hard to do an original spaceship design these days.

I've been looking at this game, is it open world so no 2 players will experience the same environment?

It is procedurally generated so everyone gets a different starting environment and the whole universe you explore is generated as you discover it. Largely it isn't persistent though - if you backtrack a few minutes everything will be changed again like you are discovering it new.

The question is, was Hello Games solely responsible for the launch fiasco, or did someone behind the scenes force their hand? Clearly Sean had a vision, however there were obvious compromises, but why? Limited budget? Time constraints?

Sometimes I feel the hostility towards Hello Games is misplaced. Clearly someone was pulling the strings behind closed doors! Ask yourself, if Sean had a choice in the matter, would he have released No Man's Sky so soon?

Losing a big part of the game with no off site backup due to flooding probably didn’t help. Shame it was rushed out. We are still nowhere near what was sold to us pre-release.
