Can the US even afford a war?

Under the law, the debt ceiling will be set on May 19, 2013 to a level "necessary to fund commitment incurred by the Federal Government that required payment."

I don't believe that covers new commitments such as war.

If the north Koreans do Infact stick to what they're saying and bomb America, I don't think they'll just sit tight. Especially if they somehow drop a nuclear bomb, America will retaliate tenfold. They always have done.

Go Wolverines!!!

I predict nuclear devices transported on the jet stream by large balloons.

The Japanese did some damage with that technique, but it was limited.

Near the end of World War II the Japanese fire balloon was designed as a cheap weapon intended to make use of the jet stream over the Pacific Ocean to reach the west coast of Canada and the United States. They were relatively ineffective as weapons, but were used in one of the few attacks on North America during World War II, causing six deaths and a small amount of damage

Yup, only time a US soldier has been killed on the mainland USA IIRC

Not true

The only fatalities came from a single incident in Oregon, where a pregnant woman and five children were killed in an explosion after coming across one of the downed balloons. Their deaths are considered the only combat casualties to occur on U.S. soil during World War II.

Probably a dumbass question but what's to stop them sticking it on a boat and sailing (say) 2/3 the distance and launching from there? They could surely find a big enough fishing boat or something ?

For a start, they don't have warheads small enough to be carried atop a missile! Besides, if they're going to go down the ship route then surely the best course of action is to just outfit a cargo ship with anti-radiation shielding and use it as a floating nuke. For example, imagine the impact that detonating such a device in the middle of the Panama Canal would have on Global trade.

I'll be going through the Panama Canal in about 3 weeks time. Please don't be giving the pudgy one ideas like that.

how are the NK supposed to strike on US soil, they dont have the capabilities whatsoever to do so.

North Korea have 70 or so submarines. Who knows if the crazy fool hasn't put one of this nukes into one, and aims to float it into New York Bay.

They sank a South Korean vessel last year from a submarine, so they clearly have some capabilities.
