North Korea

I think we need to ask old Kim if he really wants to go through with all this. I'd ask him if he feels like a paper bag, drifting through the wind, wanting to start again....

I would say the US is guilty of that more than anyone in the world, especially when you throw Africa and South America into the mix. Arguably though, i would say it was just another way to wage war in the 20th century without coming down to nukes. Russia and America raced to divide up the world instead of blow each-other up. Giving military and economic support to a rising power in a small country in trade for allegiance is obviously the more effective option than slowly introducing a stable and fair regime.

The world moved seamlessly from the Second World War into the Third World War.

But since it was mostly fought in the third world, Nobody either noticed or cared.

Exactly what I was thinking when I heard it. Same rubbish that could end in lots of misery and dead people.

I mean, we've physically seen them launch ICBMs thousands of miles, I'm not sure why it would require a leap of the imagination to suggest that their missile technology would improve enough for them to hit Europe.

Why would they go to the effort? They're developing ICBMs to counter what they perceive as US aggression rather than European.

Read some posts on twitter that they think North Korea has about 60 nuclear devices.

Depending on analysis, etc. studies on their imports including stuff smuggled in, etc. and what has been observed of their domestic production and other activities supports they potentially have the materials to construct between 20 and upto 60 devices. IIRC the CSIS report concluded the realistic number to be somewhere around 20-30 max.

What i'm more concerned about is if some nutjob tells Kim Jong that if they give them a nuke they will happily smuggle it into his enemies homeland and set it off .

NK has lived with the threat of invasion for decades, they have seen despots such as Gadaffi, Sadam etc all wiped out so presume they will eventually be top of the list and therefore have built up their arsenal. You would expect a country trying to make nukes would be desperate to keep it secret but they make sure the rest of the world can see exactly what they are doing and for a very obvious reason.

Was wondering about that - though not sure how easy it would be for them to smuggle a device out and not easy to smuggle into countries either. They have links to the likes of Iran though which might indirectly give access to people who'd have no problems carrying out an attack like that.

lol Kim-Jong is a dictator, not a terrorist.

He knows full well to protect his regime he needs the threat of nuclear weapons. Does not mean he would ever use them, as he knows too well the consequences.

I think his strategy is sound so far, he's tested the limits of what he can get away with, and still has China as an ally.

A dictator of a country with historical scores to settle with the likes of the US and Japan - I'm not sure myself how far he or the country would go in that respect maybe directly or indirectly.

If he keeps causing 6.xx earthquakes, hopefully the planet itself will step in and swallow up the territory (or swamp it with molten lava).

In all seriousness, what is the long term risk of underground nuclear tests, particularly in the hands of those who may not exactly know what they're doing? Is there actually potential to damage tectonic plates, shift orbits etc.?

I do fear at some point KJ will push just that bit too far and leave little option but to light him up.

I think you greatly overestimate the power of these bombs.

The risk really only exists on a local level as far as the earthquakes go.

There is a really weird but interesting volcano between China and Korea that is no where near any plate boundaries if i remember correctly. Earthquakes seem to encourage a little bit of activity but i don't know how close it is to do anything and given its location, its doubtful many would be effected by an eruption

I read something few months ago that suggested that the area they keep setting nukes off runs along the tectonic plates and if they keep exploding them in the same place over and over it could cause earthquakes all over the world.

I tired googling the source just now, but couldn't find anything.

Needless to say, I think it was batcrap insane.

Some of the worst people in all of this are the guys with the know-how who supply dictatorships with the knowledge and components needed to make this stuff, just to get rich. I saw a Gaddafi documentary featuring one of these utterly awful humans. And his private island.

Do you mean Mt. Paektu/Changbaishan?

I cant remember it's name but it lies very near the Chinese NK border and is quite far from any plate boundaries. There i was activity like 10-15 years ago or something. I remember it because there was a joint research effort between several countries which included us and NK...at NK request if i remember correctly.

I am doubtful these underground tests will affect anyone beyond the earthquakes.
