Not really sure where Dubai has done well in any of this.
They may not have done that well from our perspective but this may well have been the best they could do when they are balancing the interests of the state whilst appeasing the significant vocal hardliners.
We are expecting these countries to make societal changes in a generation that the Western world was afforded centuries to do.

The difference of course being that we did it without having examples around the world of why treating women like decent human beings is a good idea. But then if you are a male you may not want to lose the power you have by treating women as property.
I am sure that is probably the case, I just wish that more people would see that before going and decide that the money isn't worth propping up such a culture. Ignoring what happened to this women the way they treat servants would be enough for me to go "Nah, not worth it".

I agree I got offered a nice job in Saudi for a not so nice US company. The money wasn't worth it - I did seriously consider it for a few days - then the wife put her foot down anyway which kind of made my decision for me!
There is a big difference between the Arabic nations though and the other countries in the region. But most people lump them alltogether but difference is like night and day in the outlook on most things.
