Norwegian rape victim sentenced to 1 year and 4 months of prison in Dubai for sex outside of marriag

well if they do we can point to the fact that we have since changed the scentences for the crimes, however he can only be scentenced to the punishment that existed at the time of his crime.

And they can argue the same ...

Makes neither right does it really. Unless you are only interested in the letter of the law being followed. Which in both cases seems hardly fair or "right".

I think your pretty wrong but feel free to prove otherwise. Off you go like all the other people who can't back up their claims in this thread. ;)

If you bothered to actually look I normally get moaned at by the Muslims for being antiMuslim but hey ho they are just like you - same coin different side - you can never garner favour from fanatics because you can never really fully agree with their cause and you can't argue someone out of a position they have never bothered to argue themselves into in the first place.

Fanatics? Is that what you are if you call a spade a spade? Listen, for right thinking people everywhere it's plain to see that these Muslim countries are incredibly backwards.

If you disagree, tell me, would you want to live in one of them? Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Sudan... places where amputation is a punishment for theft and stoning for adultery...

Yeah, you go live there, and tell us all about how we're fanatics in *this* country!

how can they argue the same?

they paroled her they didnt change the law.

im not talkign about the pealsjudge changing the scentance i mean between the time he performed the crimes and the trial we changed the scentences for the crimes, but he must be tried under the ones that were i nforce when he did the crimes.

unless UAE just reworte its laws they cant argue the same.

Maybe I was thinking of C.R.A.Z.Y or Craterloads?
meh can't be bothered looking, need sleep.

Yes, I think you were but seriously if you can't tell the difference between Xordium and Craterloads then maybe you shouldn't comment. It is not like they are very similar.

No, I call a spade a spade. Hence why I call someone who is totally for one position and totally against another position without thinking that maybe there is a little grey area to consider ... a fanatic.

You can't go calling other countries backwards wholescale when your own country has such obvious failings.

I've lived in Iran - great place, great people rules by retards. A bit like this country.

(fully expect the usual idiots to now come in and say I said Iran and this country are identical and place that out of context because they read what they want not what is posted.

I suspect they would argue that their justice system showed clemency and forgiveness towards someone who didn't appreciate the difference environment they were in.

I suspect they would argue that letting someone off with 30 months for that is "backwards" because it is insufficient in their eyes for such a crime.

Are you alright Tefal - not like you to post something so error ridden?

Found this from a Norwegian newspaper Patience...........UPDATED: Marte Deborah Dalelv, the young Norwegian woman who was jailed in Dubai after she’d reported being raped there, finally came home to Norway on Wednesday. She now admits she made an “incredibly stupid” mistake of withdrawing her rape claim after initially filing it last March, since the withdrawal is probably what landed her in jail.

Under the circumstance Dubai were being more than fair to pardon her well done Dubai in my opinioun it can't be a bad place after all, I wonder if our newpapers will print this.

Not really sure where Dubai has done well in any of this.

They may not have done that well from our perspective but this may well have been the best they could do when they are balancing the interests of the state whilst appeasing the significant vocal hardliners.

We are expecting these countries to make societal changes in a generation that the Western world was afforded centuries to do.

I expect the authorities wish a certain woman had never entered their country. I suspect she wishes the same.

Possibly but I am not entirely sure I would define that as "well done".

The difference of course being that we did it without having examples around the world of why treating women like decent human beings is a good idea. But then if you are a male you may not want to lose the power you have by treating women as property.

I am sure that is probably the case, I just wish that more people would see that before going and decide that the money isn't worth propping up such a culture. Ignoring what happened to this women the way they treat servants would be enough for me to go "Nah, not worth it".

No I don't think it would.

People are frightened of change - sure there was an exceptional comment in Dune about this.

I agree I got offered a nice job in Saudi for a not so nice US company. The money wasn't worth it - I did seriously consider it for a few days - then the wife put her foot down anyway which kind of made my decision for me!

There is a big difference between the Arabic nations though and the other countries in the region. But most people lump them alltogether but difference is like night and day in the outlook on most things.

Dubai is a lot safer place to live in than London is, it's only of the safest in the world.

London is also safe for tourists and the people who are fortunate enough to not have to mix with the great unwashed - construction slaves in Dubai don't quite have that luxury - likewise Hackney is hardly a picturepostcard location - let's face it even the libraries there have signs up saying "shut the **** up".
