NVIDIA 4000 Series

You're all assuming there's gonna be plenty of supply at launch day , i have a feeling its gonna be another round of wait 6-12 months for a gpu you want and used market is gonna sky rocket again. Availability is only good now because everyone has what they want and mining has died down a fair bit.

The Lesson we all learnt from last round is: Don't sell your gpu till you get your new one
Only way I can see there being a shortage along with massive demand is if mining sky rockets again and covid mutates or monkeypox evolves/spreads massively = lockdown 3.0 :D

But yeah I defo won't be selling the 3080 till I get my hands on one and all is working well. Might not even bother selling tbh and just keep it as a back up gpu if I can't get more than £300 for it, which I'm expecting now given all the scalpers and miners trying to offload theirs over the coming months.....

I'm with you on that Nexus18. It's just guesswork, but just based on people I know and general sentiment the pent-up demand has gone. What's left is miners debating the best time to dump their cards and the midrange to low end budget conscious buyers trying to time their next upgrade. I don't see any appetite for high prices.

Or world war 3 breaks out! It's hitting the EV market pretty hard right now with price increases on a monthly basis, specs getting downgraded while price goes up and wait times stretching to nearly a year.

The way i see it, unless this series its ridiculously fast and actual benchmarks reflect this and not just cos they've increased x,y,z by 50% (being hypothetical here) etc so therefore performance will be, then im gonna avoid this gen and wait for 5000 series. It's not like im struggling for fps right now and its not like i don't have a gpu either.

What GPU do you have? If I was on a 3070+ or 6700XT+ I wouldn't upgrade either.

Yeah I would say if you're not interested in RT or/and don't play any titles with RT then no reason to upgrade at all. 3080/3090 and even a 3070 nails 3440x1440 with ease, even at 4k in 95% of rasterization titles, especially with dlss/fsr.

Chances are I will be going FE again assuming they just sell at MSRP as usual. I agree those will likely sell out months on end if you don't act fast.
As for the rest, I can't see as much damand past the first few of months. Especially if they price it much higher.

I am in no rush anyway. I could probably get by with what I got and skip a gen if I wanted too. But as usual I want the new and shiny tech and I am also hoping we will get a nice RT boost this time around so enabling RT does not have to mean tanking FPS like it does now.

3090 hence the hesitation to upgrade since it will probably be a small bump in performance at 1440p ultrawide and not something i would probably notice either since everything i play already runs into triple digit fps figures. .

Yeah same as me tbh , DLSS has been a big game changer and will easily help the 3090 etc go on for another 2 years no problem as when using it at 4K it will pretty much max 120fps 95% of the time in the games i play making any upgrade a waste of money for the minute , i also use dlss at 1440p 240hz and again no issues here apart from CPU ( 10900K ) starting to struggle in a few games with the gpu utilization actually dropping showing it could give more if cpu allowed... What i would be looking for with the 4090 is a big uplift in native rasterization performance as this is where the 3090 will show its limits as gets harder to hit that 4K/120fps - 1440p/240hz i am after especially if using RT which i will turn on if available. If we see that 50% jump in this scenario then i am sold

Be interesting to see how far DLSS will carry the 3000 series gpu's for, if i can get 2-3 years more out of this card before upgrading i'll be laughing! My longest gpu setup was a sli 680 which lasted all the way till the 2000 series where i got a 2070 super.

Oh yeah RT is one thing i actually forgot about, my last game that really fully utilised it was Cyberpunk 2077 and it did look good with it on. I've not come across any other games however lately that uses it, mainly my own change of interest in indie games though and some of the shooters like Squad and Insurgency that i play don't use it either. I'm sure a lot of newer games especially triple A titles will be using it in the coming years, it's just whether personally i would be interested in them and hence utilising RT. You reckon RT will further get developed into indie games too? I mean Minecraft did so i would imagine so.

Haha if we do get that kind of uplift then yes im in too haha but being an ITX user i will need to consider power consumption and whether my current psu will even handle the increase in power usage on these new 4000 series. I know everything is rumours but going from 2000 to 3000 was quite a jump in power usage so im expecting the same for the 4000 series here.

Maybe a minimum of 850w for the 4090 and 950w for a 4090ti? A bump in tiers for the power consumption seems reasonable.

I live in Florida and my 3080Ti already generates more heat than I want. I had to get a window-mount AC unit to keep the room comfortable without freezing my wife out of the rest of the house with the central AC unit.

Also, Nvidia still has not fixed the random VR frame drops with Ampere, so even if they don't go crazy on the power, I'm still not buying-in on day one.

They could double performance next gen and the FOMO would still be weak for me this time around.

Totally off topic but i love Florida! We went to Orlando last month for my wifes first visit to the theme parks! Already planning our second visit!

Consoles can play games that look just as good as a PC and they have weak gpus. I don't believe we would get 2x performance increase.
3 Series cards will defo be strong for PC gamers. The DLSS would help as well. No real need to upgrade from a 3080,3080Ti,3090,3090Ti to the next gen. I fear 4 Series cards will be scalped and hard to get.

There was one last year I think. Forgot the name of it now. Ascent or something like that.

Yeah I think we will see it more and more in indie games also.

I won't be investing if the 4090 uses much more wattage than my 3090. Simple as that
Never really thought of a graphics card as an investment really. Though these days it can work out like that, especially if you time it right :D

Essentially the sale of my 3080 has paid for the 3070 and a 4080 for example. And then on top I will sell those probably not much less then I got them so works out nicely.

The worst kind of investment in terms of resale value is when you get the top tier GPU like a 3090 or the 3090Ti. Those lose value big time.

Investing in my hobby should I say

I don't know if that is just a term that is widely used incorrectly or there are multiple meanings to the word. People like to say it when buying almost anything these days :p
I think the investment of time, money, emotion can be used in equal measure when using the word.

Well the Oxford dictionary seems to think so anyway :D

of coarse theres a need to upgrade for some, those that want every fps they can get, money/energy no object, then you have those that want top end gpu for there so called status, loads will want the first batch ,they will be scalped as they know the above folk will pay through the nose. , for some FOMO effect comes into play, they will pay extra as the want to belong to the exclusive crowd, not forgetting the desperate ones who need a new gpu at all costs, like broken gpu's etc
list is endless who will want a new gpu,
lower down the order we have gamers who will be content with what they have for time being, in no rush to buy(like myself) who want a gpu but refuse to pay daft prices(mainstream) those cards will be scalped at first as well

so theres plenty of gamers for the scalper to be salivating over, they know what ever price they want, gamers will buy them, well some

Haha. Yeah I guess :)

Just imagined someone buying a cucumber and then saying it was a good investment.

Time: Didn't take long to have the desired effect.
Money: It was buy one get one free (used the free one).
Emotion: Was fulfilling multiple ways
