in the latest gamers nexus video Steve says he's talked to his sources at the AIBs and they confirmed that the RTX4090 will be available and sold at launch of the RTX4000 series, so it won't be staggered for a later launch as they've done with Ti releases

Guilty as charged :D

I think for the monitor I have a 4070/80 will be perfect. The main thing I am after is a lot more RT grunt. Though some may disagree and say what I need most is vram
Same.

Only reason I'll be upgrading is for RT as the grunt just isn't there even with dlss.

Speaking of which, how's your 3070 doing at 3440x1440? As I read somewhere that a 3080 wasn't a suitable card for such a res. supposedly only good for 1080p and that a 3060 would be a more wise purchase for higher resolutions.... :o

We must be mad, most can’t even see the difference RT makes it seems :p

Been perfectly fine. If I managed at 4K… :)

I am just bored of it though and fancy something new and shiny :D

With the way the current gpu market is looking including the second hand market, you'll be lucky to get MSRP value for your 3080 now.

The 3090(ti) is going to take a massive hit if a 4060/4070 matches/beats it, as was the case with the 2080ti and 3070  So a 3080 will also take a hit, just nowhere as much.

Who knows, maybe supply will be crap again though which will keep the second hand market prices up....
The thing is the 3080 at MRSP is actually not that horrendous so I think people will keep paying £650 for it for a while It's not like the 2080ti, 2080ti, 3090, 3090ti etc that have MRSP of over a grand, people were only buying them because it was all that was in stock and/or have the money and desire to buy high end. CeX is a good barometer at times, even now they are still offering within £100 in cash for the 3080FE, the other cards will typically be several hundred less (e.g. its £650 for a 3080ti, £739 for a 3090 etc).
Realistically prices will be hiked on the new gen, you might get a 4070 or something that is beating the 3080 but they will be charging say £750 for it.

it appears that way because the Turing 2080 & 2080Ti was so awful, its one of the tools Nvidia uses to increase their margins and they will imho use the 3090 to do that for 4000 series

That is very true but at the end of the day, people need to accept that this is the way of the world, inflation happens and things don't get any cheaper to manufacture. Do I miss the days of getting flagship gpus for £400? Of course but people need to accept that is over. Thankfully my salary keeps going up every 6 months to cover inflation and then some so whilst I resent the cost of items for everything, in some ways, it's not really costing me that much more.

As it is though, 3080 for MSRP provided by far the best value for money, which is why pretty much every tech press considered it to be king for this gen (including HU where they pretty much rated nvidia to be the winner across every tier). Nothing came close "overall" for that price. 6800xt was close but lack of RT (affecting multiple games) and lack of good upscaling tech. held it back, so much that in some ways a 3070 for £460 was better value too, gibbo even confirmed that the 3080 and 3070 were extremely popular even at AIB prices.

When you have amd charging in the same bracket too, it doesn't help matters especially when they aren't delivering the same quality/performance/features either (streaming capabilities, ray tracing, better upscaling etc.). The only hope is intel shake up the game which might help keep prices in check but this won't be for a good while until they can gain some market share.

The only way to escape it is by not buying anything at all (and you would need to have a very large portion of the market to vote with their wallet and even then, it could just drive prices up even more if pc gaming scene becomes even more of a niche enthusiast platform) or going console.

Correct. I remember baulking before Turing's release at the prices of the GTX 1060/70/80 thinking they were brazen enough but times have changed where a mid range card that can do most jobs costing £300 are now a myth.

AT LAUNCH, sure. now some 20 months old and within spitting distance of the 4000 series, not so much.
That can apply to every gpu though including amds own cards. It's silly to be buying "any" gpu right now, especially a 3080 12GB/3080ti/3090/3090ti that is going to crash in value hard as soon as the 4060/4070 are announced.

agreed. hence im stuck in no mans land now waiting for 3080's to crash to £500 or below or for the launch of the 4000's. just praying my 1070 lasts long enough so my hands not forced.

Probably be less than that if the market is in a good place tbh, that's what the 3090s will be going for second hand. If you don't mind getting a gpu which has been used for mining either, it'll be even cheaper.

I know where you're coming from but even before then, the 1080ti was priced similarly. Both cards were a lot faster than previous gen so some people will pay the £650.

For sure it's shifted my expectations though. Most I'd ever paid for a GPU until a year ago was £270.

The main issue imho isn't so much 'the price' its what you are getting for that price and how its being sold.

An example in question is the 3090 which in itself is a good GPU but such a dreadful consumer product that any comparisons to it looks like good value for money. You can just see some reviewer in the next few months coming out with something like 'hey this 4070 give you 3090 performance for $600 and man that is great value'. No its not because they've used a dreadful product to increase the price of something else.

Now yes there is no point in pretending its doesn't happen and commercialisation and exploitation in a closed or monopolistic market is a fact of life... however by the same logic also know your extra money basically goes into profit margins not added R&D, manufacturing, economic inflation you are fuelling a machine that wants you to pay more to get less.

The 102 die entry product in 2020 was £650-£700, those products dried up and went EoL pretty damn quick to sell more 102 die products at £1600. How much is a 102 die product going to cost in Q3 2022? That's the story Nvidia doesn't want to talk about because that is where consumers are going to get it in the ballz.

So that £650 equivalent product is now approaching 2k, and that is not due to economic inflation, cost of manufacturing, component prices etc its because Nvidia segmented the top end die and drained down the cheaper models.

The one bit of good news is twice now Nvidia have found the market limits, firstly with Turing under performing sales in Q4 2018 forcing them to release a 2070S and more recently the 3090 range topping out at 2k. That is where the sales decline to an extent that they don't recover through margin... its the balancing act Apple does all the time with its products finding that sweet spot instead of using volume.

At this point no one can really complain about prices anymore. Everyone is lapping up whatever they can get hold of and for pretty much any price. Maybe the downturn in mining will help but I doubt Nvidia will have any interest is reducing prices though. Suck it up or go without.
